I am seeing exactly the same issue on my JV33 the way i cure it is by lifting the head up to max height.

  • I use Metamark and when laminating i always get sparks between the front of the laminator and my large belly, just one of those things, if it does not discharge through my tummy then at the end when i touch the bed i get a discharge through my fingers. Just learnt to live with it.

  • Thanks for your help, will have a look tomorrow.

As John above says this is exactly what had happened on mine, the offset was something like 17mm one direction and 30mm the other, took me along time to sort as not obvious but worth going through all the settings and making sure you are happy with them, as these are great cutters.

I bought a cg 75 cutter a while back, and had problems with it not cutting the vinyl properly and not cutting in the correct place.
I solved the first problem easy, I bought a holder and blade from Hybrid, expensive but they are good, now cuts perfectly.
The second problem it always cut in the wrong place took a while to solve and it was an offset that had been put in, from memory it was to do with the registration marks, I got the maintenance manual from Hybrid and you do a test with a pen loaded and it draws two plus marks which should be on top of each other mine where a long way out as offset was set to something silly, changed offset and all works fine now.

Hi I realise that these are old posts but they came up in a google search i am doing about laser cutting/etching machines, we are looking to buy one and have no knowledge of such things, the two we are looking at are flat beds suitable for an 8×4 sheet one is made by piranha and the other by HPC.
Did you purchase a laser and can any body give feedback on either of the above or even suggest a better make.

Many thanks for any help you can give me.

  • Hi Mo,

I have this problem with my JV33 it just stops randomly printer appears to be waiting for info but none is flowing.
Looking at some of the cooments you have had back could be spike in electric but we have nothing obveious and had the problem at our previous unit, cheap printheads not likely as we are still on original printheads.
RIP issue woulkd seem unlikely as I use Wasatch, so possably something on printer or I think the problem is my PC as when this problem starts I clean the PC and do not normally see the problem again for ages.
When I say that I clean the pc what I do is I go into internet explorer select options and deleate all history, I then go into system tools and select the cleanup pc option and select everything. When that has finished I then run diskdefrag. if it is really bad I also run chkdsk/f from a command promt to schedule a clean on next start.

I am currently running windows 8 but had same thing on windows 7, I belive that it is a problem with the amount of large temp files that a rip creates.

    Kind regards

We have used Avery with fantastic results for the last 3 years or so, we did try Arlon after meeting them at the SignUK a couple of years back, unfortunately it fell off some vehicles needed much more outgassing than the Avery and tunnelled through the printer hitting the head.
We also had trouble with marks in the coloured Arlon media which when we spoke to them they stated was normal, very poor backup they could not supply a spec or any profiles for there cast just said use the Avery ones.
Not saying don’t just saying be careful.

I have just changed the bulbs in our print shop due to colours looking different when prints taken outside and I was advised to use Philips 965 tubes, it was explained to me by the wholesellers that daylight bulbs are designed to combat SAD disorders but the Philips gives you the least varience between inside and outside printed colours.

Have to say they work really well.

We had a problem with media supplied by WS a few months back, long story but I found WS to be most helpful and knowledgeable throughout the whole investigation process, it was not a media problem but a printing problem in the end.
I think the problem you may have is that you have decided it is media and WS should compensate you, I believe that you need to talk to WS and do tests and see if you can repeat the problem and hopefully confirm what is the fault.
I know WS will help with this because that is the sort of helpful company they are but you need to keep an open mind on what the problem could be.

August 1, 2012 at 1:44 pm in reply to: Colorific / Selectech / Tech8 Bio ink problems?

I have just read this thread from beginning to end and it brought back many memories, I bought a Unifrom Grenadier 1900 from B&P infact Justin from Tech8 was the enginier who installed it.

In those days B&P was one of the best companies to deal with there was an ammount of confusion about what ink would print on what media and how long it would last, B&P offered a 1 stop solution ink, media and printers all under one roof and designed to work together, problem solved.

Today I run a Mimaki JV33 and have only had 1 deflection/blocked nozzle problem with it in 3+ years and that was shortly after we put colorifc ink from Selechtech in it, Tech8 where very good and discovered a problem with
2 of the dampers worn which they replaced free of charge, however whilst I could not fault Tech8 service an any way I got cold feet about the ink and went back to genuine Mimaki SS21, when this problem occured most nozzles where showing about 1.5 million shots, today they have all done over 4 million shots and none of the other 6 dampers has caused any problems.

The 3rd party ink debate has rolled on for many years and I see no sign of it stopping but I am trying to look at the bigger picture, in the past we used Activasol because it lasted better than Roland inks and stayed on more media
today the genuine inks work very well and the 3rd party inks are designed to match them rather than better them, so as I see it there is no longer a performance advantage but the decision is based purely on cost.
This is important and £30 per cart can save you alot of money over a year but personally I belive that a large chunck of that saving is likely to be spent on printer maintance/ down time.

When I started printing nobody would own a solvent printer without some form of warrenty or maintance contract now lots of printers run all day long without these, this alone saves us £2000/year.

I think the best way is to run the printer on the ink it was designed for.

I have just downloaded a trial version to evaluate after being a life long user of Illistrator, I struggle to see how adobe can justify there high price tag when both software looks very simelar.
The main problem I have with Corel is getting the print size correct, in Illistrator i go file print, select a postscript printer (mimaki JV33) then page size custom and it prints the file out the correct size ie the same size as the illistrator artboard to the millimeter. I try this in Corel but it seems it wants me to input the size and i am having to select various sizes a1 etc some times cropping bits off sometimes wasting media.
How do you print from Corel say open an eps/pdf file that you do not know the size of the print and get it to print it all.

    Thanks

With regards to MD5 being Arlon, MD5 is MD5 made by Metamark and loved by all for it’s ability to absorb lots of ink therefore giving high gloss finish. It is a very good vinyl.

The confusion on this thread I belive comes from MD7 this IS Arlon it is the Arlon 6000 cast with no air escape, simply rebranded and sold by metamark, if you read the matamark book you will see that MD5 and other vinyls made by Metamark are sold in 50M lengths however the MD7 shows it’s USA origen being sold in 45M lengths.

    Hi Chris,

Not in the office at the moment but from memory I wrote a small batch file run in windows to clear all the queues as these can slow wasatch down as they fill up. Problem was a couple of times i cleared the queues then realised i had deleted the cut path for a print that was still out gassing, as a result of this i removed print queue 2 from the batch file.

I think these files if i remember are stored in c:\wwrip\prtqueue2\ dont know what format it is in but that should be the cutpath files.

This assumes your cutter is device 2

We have a Mimaki JV33 and the matching cutter CG 130 fxII all driven by Wasatch and they work very well and cutting is simple, the cutter always finds the marks unlike the Graphtec I had before.

I came from Roland Graphtec and found Mimaki a bit quirky at first but the quality in my opinion is a lot better from Mimaki.

I have the easymount 1.6 wide and hav efound the easiest way to load the laminate is to use the backing from the previous roll that gets loaded on to the rewinder, I put this on the spare mandrel they supply on the storage space at the top front position, it is wound so that the silicon side gos face down on the table.
To load i simply pull the backing out slide it under the roller then put the laminate round the top roller and wind down till rollers just/barely touch you can run it for 100-200 mm to take up tension in the laminate, I then cut the backing leaving 400mm approx offer up the vinyl and aline the printer cut edge of vinyl with the top roller, keep a tension on the vinyl by pushing slightly outwards and backwards down onto the silicon paper, press the pedel and perfect every time, well most times.

    Hope this helps

Sorry this does not help in solving your problem with printing however you did answer that yourself, the windows pc works so your choice seems to be use a pc that does exactly what it says on the box or buy a decent ballpoint pen.

    Hi,

I use Wasatch RIP and Mimaki JV33 printer the RIP shows how much a a print uses, so printing 1sqM test prints i found that costs range from £2.14 to £5.12 depending on media etc.

However to try and best answer your question my 5 year vinyl has an ink cost of £2.56 per sq M so i guess your 3 euro is about there.

Thanks for all your replys, I now know that I pay about the right price for my leaflets etc, however I am not looking for a new supplier, i have 2 already 1 local and 1 not so local.

We want to look at the possability of printing the smaller volumes in house not so much to make more money altough we should see increase if we can match our suppliers set up, but we want the control of the timing of this work as most is very quick turn around and we as a company waste hours and lots of fuel picking up small quantitys from the suppliers.

Also a lot of our customers seem to belive they have a better deal with work odne in house.

What i want to do first is get an idea of the equipment needed, i belive initially a printer and a gulitine also need to know Media supplier then once i have this i can work out some aprox printing costs and decide if to go further.

I am after feedback on people who have bought this type of equipment how good it perfomred and how reliable as i say i am told the Oki printers are good but does anyone know of a better make that is happy with thicker media ?

I thankyou all again for your inputs

I went from a Roland SP740 to a JV33 and at first it was strange to learn as the controls are not as logical on the Mimaki, however in my opinion the build quality and print quality are much much better. Have run it 2 years now and only one head crash that was our fault and that is it. Would definatly chose another Mimaki.

When we went to sign UK this year I noticed the most popular print there was the JV33 that to me says it all.

Most RIPs are fairly equal in what they do and my opinion is let the printer decide the RIP for you ie get the most popular RIP for your printer, this will give you the most flexibility to find profiles etc.

Most suppliers will have profiles for a Roland using vesaworks or a Mimaki usiong Rasterlink but i currently run a Mimaki through Wasatch and yes it is a great RIP but very hard to find profiles for this combination.

The problems with windows remote are many, it logs you in as another instance and lots of programs do not work with it, Wasatch RIP being a good example of this, you can see this when you try to close the machine you connected to and it says are you sure as other people are still connected.

I use Ultr@vnc every day to access my RIP pc and it is great set up as server on pc to be accesed and viewer on other pc and it interacts very cleanly.

Not got time to draw it but could you not turn the cross clockwise between approx 45-90 degrees as looking at drivers side, this would allow 3 long legs and a short one going backwards.

We have the Mimaki JV33 which is running CMYK X2 if Roland run the same as Mimaki it is easy for reordering new inks as you do not need to hold any stock because the mimaki uses one cartridge only at a time so when first empty it switch to second and you have a full cartridge to use while ordering a replacement for the first.

Nice on long runs if a ink is low because it auto switches over without stopping printing.

To be honest no, this is not a clear problem with simple answers, I have a JV33 and do see a bit of side to side wander on the thicker 300micron litestop, however recently completted a jumbo poup at 3M tall and they all lined up pefectly for a very fussy customer.

I have had problems with lineer calibration making them to long to fit bit all panels where the same so image still aligned.

My only advice and i am sure you do this already is to line it up carefully at the start.

We moved our JV33 printer and Easymount Laminator 1.6M in through the window using just a fork lift, this was a nightmare.

We had to take them out about 6 months ago this time we hired scaffolding and built a platform outside the window then forklifted from the platform, much more sane.

We have Wasatch and it is designed to be used as just cut only if you want, Dave you said you are using on flat bed we have version 6.7 at the moment and this has a major upgrade for flatbeds i belive including media thickness control.

With regards to graphtec we used to have a CE3000 MkII that wasatch drove perfectly the cut line was spot on, it now drives a Mimaki JV33 / CGFX as it is a far more stright forward solution to print and cut than Rastelink / Finecut.

Wasatch is a good RIP and if you have a service contract the support is great.

When I had my Uniform printer i had this problem, i found the best way to solve it was to up the pass rate to max it will go this is a pain because it slow the print down but should allow it to dry before going on to takeup.

Also helps if you have a heater you can put in front of it or maybe try a profile with a lesser ink limit ie 260 not 300

Adobe allows 2 installs but 1 user, the idea as Dave says is that you could install a second copy on your laptop, this would allow you to design at your office on a desktop then take your laptop out to the customer to show them the design but the thing to remember is it is licensed only for one user.

    Peter,

Yes we have a license, so do the car dealers and the motorcycle sales so we can print using any one of the 3 license numbers, we just select one of them in the software as set up by the supplier.

If we ourselves print a plate we have to do all the paperwork however if we print for one of the other business they have to do the paperwork as the plate goes against there license number.

So as i say nice and easy for us as most of our number plates are sold to the garage who do MOTs.

It seems that when another supplier puts up prices Metamark claim UK manufacture and able to hold there prices, however now they state in that claim they forget about there raw materials and now they show that they are the same as all the other suppliers.

I stopped using Metamark as they tend to imply all products are Metamakr uk made until there is an issue with it and then suddenly they reveal it is sourced from China, as i used them less they sent me a letter with drawing my credit, needless to say never placed another order with them, too many others of equal price and quality knocking on my door.

Never used VW only Wasatch and Wasatch does not have mm per second on head speed but the lowest setting i used on mine was 600 with the normal setting on most profiles being 800 as i say Wasatch did not break down what that 800 was and maybe350 mm per second is equivelent but my Roland would not print nice under 600

We do lots of number plates as we are based in a centre with both a motorcycle shop and a garage. We are lucky however that we raerly sale direct to the public as most of them go to the garage and we are able to supply to both the dealers using there license numbers meaning we print the plate and they do the paperwork.

You need the Roland tool to wind down the capping station, looks like a hollow bar with one end flatterned slightly.

Switch off power and clamp tubes going to waste bottle, there is a hole underneath the printer inline with capping station, the tool gos in here and allows you to unwind the capping station, once this is unwound you can move the head to one side manually.
I used to use solvent flush just stick a big syringe with a needle on into a solvent flush cartridge and draw out, fill up capping stations and return head to capping position, now wind up the capping station gently with the tool and leave overnight.

In the morning remove clamps and switch on.

For costing purposes we use £5.00 per meter, we have a Mimaki JV33 and inks cost us £80.00 per 440 cart.

We use Wasatch RIP and this can give you a cost for every print telling you exactly how much of each colour used and the cost of it, we discovered the average cost is approx £3.00 per Meter, this is using variable drops and 720 x 720 resolution.

    Hope this helps

    Hi Ruairi,

I used to have a Roland sol jet II 1.9M print only and a Graphtec CE 3000 Cutter and an Easymount laminator 1.6M top heat roller.

Personally i prefer separate print and cut I now have the same setup as John Mimaki JV33 printer CGFX cutter and still my easymount laminator.

The Mimaki printers are great bits of kit and the JV33 won printer of the year, i used to find materials every so often that my Roland would not print on however the Mimaki has printed on every material i have tried in it so far.

There is no comparison in my opinion between the Graphtec and the Mimaki cutters I never really got on with the Graphtec but the CGFX is a brilliant cutter, always finds the registration marks and just feels and sounds solidly built.

May be more expensive but full solvent inks and 2 years warranty the Mimaki machines have more than impressed me.

The downside of Mimaki is the software will not run on 64 bit machines.

    Regards

    Russell.

I have had both Roland and now Mimaki JV33, Rolands are great easy to use and very reliable, Mimaki a little bit more complicated to learn but well worth the effort.

Print quality was always good on the Roland but is exceptionally good on the Mimaki i do not get any visible banding on most medias and very quick.

In my opinion there is not much to promote either machine above the other so it comes down to inks the Mimaki inks have printed on every media i have tried which i believe is down to the advantage of a full solvent over eco solvent.

Both good but the Mimaki gets my vote.

I aquired a Mimaki JV33 a couple of months ago and discovered the same problem, great hardware but let down badly by old software. I chose to run mine through Wasatch and this has proved to be a great solution as I also have the CGFX cutter which is driven by Wasatch.

However i did some investigations at the time and Mimaki where saying then that they hope to be 64 bit capable by December 2009 do not know if they are still on track or not.
