hey guys, iv currently got a Roland sp540i, its great, but a little slow and sometimes. Iv been looking to upgrade the last few months and still not sure what to go for.. I like the option of print and cut but would i be better with seperates. Iv got a good summa cutter that just does the plain stuff. Iv possibly got an order of printing 100,000+ labels.. ive been looking at either a mimaki Jv33 or the Roland XC540… but this morning i was called by a rep trying to tell me the new Epson GS6000 is the new bad boy!! Anybody outthere with these machines? 🙂

I went from a Roland SP740 to a JV33 and at first it was strange to learn as the controls are not as logical on the Mimaki, however in my opinion the build quality and print quality are much much better. Have run it 2 years now and only one head crash that was our fault and that is it. Would definatly chose another Mimaki.

When we went to sign UK this year I noticed the most popular print there was the JV33 that to me says it all.

Get a demo great print quality and fast drying inks.

    Kind regards

    Russell.

JV33 all day, like Russel, we’ve had ours around two years and I am always pleased with its output. I have been in the print game since 1986 so I have a good idea on what I wanted and was very picky on which one to go for. The Mimaki won hands down.

If you have space get a separate cutter, in fact, your summa may suffice so save your money. Also I have seen the CJ… combi thingy what ever its called and I don’t think its as good as the stand alone printer.

I don’t have a printer so can’t offer any sort of comment about what’s best but I might be put off the Epson printer a little because it seems to be something new to Epson.

I have Epson desktop printers and think they are great and would be unlikely to change to any other brand and I know that other manufacturers use Epson print heads which says something for them as well but what might put me off is this is apparently the first time Epson have manufactured a solvent ink.

As these machines are not cheap I might want to see how the epson prints hold up under sign shop usage rather than any tests that epson may have run. Sure the printer will be a great success but don’t think I would be buying one of the first machines.

I’ve gone from a Soljet Pro I (victory ecojet) to a Soljet Pro II (Grenadier) and 5 weeks ago changed to a HP L25500.
Bit different from the solvents, but nice to lose the smell of them, plus you can print and use immediately.

There are plently of good printers out there, and choosing is not easy (it took me most of this year to make my mind up, specially going from what I knew – solvent printing for 7 years, to something completely different and new – latex inks).

Ah, also went from print & cut machines to separates – much better!

    Good luck!

I have been told the Epson is a very good machine, it pretty much looks after its self and print quality very good. I noticed it uses alot of colours, I would think it would cost more to run then a jv33. Im looking for a printer but Im looking to go much larger then 1600mm and looking for speed and quality, Im looking for a machine that prints at about 80mm bands insted of the 5mm.

Peter, probably use the heads as I know a few manufacturers use epson heads but I doubt if they use epson inks. From what I have read this is the first solvent ink that epson have manufactured. or at least branded as epson.

inks are expensive, I have been lead to believe the reason is epson hold the cards for using their ink in their heads, and I have third party inks that state on the cart "not manufactured by epson" why would they state that?

Im pretty sure Epson printers are something like a 8 colour machine, not just cmyk lc lm.

Peter, I’m not going to argue with you about it, you know far more than me. I don’t even have a printer.

I probably just read it wrong but when I looked about all the info I could find seemed to imply to me that this was the first epson solvent ink on the market.

its the first one Badged under their name and the GS is the first Epsom solvent printer. Bur all the major printers with the Epsom DX4 & DX5 heads normally run on Epsom ink.
