Again, fair play to you mate!
There’s a link on here to get a free meter of Avery Supreme material. This is great stuff to use, so get the free meter and keep practicing!
(It’s a great feeling looking at your first wrap, ain’t it!)

A bonnet can be a hard place to start, especially on your on and with VWS.
Walk before you can run mate.
Im sure someone will mention James Deacon before long. If you can, get on his coarse. Top bloke and you’ll learn loads. (Don’t tell him I said that!)

Best one I heard, (I don’t recommend it!)
was a guy who was feed up with his car being broken into/stolen (somewhere abroad), so he rigged his accelerator pedal to a hand grenade. As soon as the pedal was depressed the pin was released…..Kaabooommm!!
I believe he’s still on death row…….. (hot) 🙁 🙁

MemberOctober 24, 2011 at 8:42 pm in reply to: my first attempt at vinyl wrapping comments?Hi Sam
Fair play for giving it a go, a lot are too scared to attempt a wrap!
I agree with Mike to an extent, matt black isn’t the easiest to work with as it scratches/discolours pretty easily. Saying that the VWS1 is descent material to handle once an experienced fitter. £8 a meter is a good price depending on the width. I’ve wrapped the best part of 200+ vehicles with this and had no come backs. As long as it’s fitted correctly and post heated it shouldn’t be an issue.
A lot of replies will come in saying do a wrapping coarse. This is the only way you’ll get to learn what techniques are best and well worth the money.
Having a go yourself is great but it won’t earn you money as a lot of vinyl will be wasted. Go on a coarse and learn using ‘their’ vinyl. The knowledge you will pick up will give you a better understanding of vinyl and what you can/can’t do with it.
It would still be good to see you attempt though if you can upload it.
As Mike quite rightly said, there are better vinyls out there but for a first attempt don’t go spending £20-30 per meter as you WILL make mistakes and loose a lot of money!
Good luck and keep on practising.

Hi Ben/John from London!!

Thanks Kev.
It’s nice to know that there is mutual respect between all the different aspects that make up the sign industry.

Excellent Kevin.
Way out of my league, I’ll stick to wrapping!
How do you know how much wind force it will stand up to before attempting a job like this this?
Please excuse my ignorance, its not my field!

Totally agree John, Martins best post! No mention of legs, just signage!
Welcome back Martin! (sorry!)

Nice one mate, like it.
Maybe Snow would be better tho…

After ringing around PAT testers they wanted ’emergency call out charge’.
Then one PAT tester told me any electrical goods still in original packaging has passed EU/CE regulations and doesn’t need testing. Bought new heat gun and lead following morning and had a good day’s fitting with an angry H&s guy overlooking my every move! Happy day’s!

MemberOctober 2, 2011 at 10:31 am in reply to: Advice needed wrapping the roof of a car please?Hi Steve
Good advice from Gill. Even using vinyl which isn’t bubble free/air flow a wrap can not be done wet properly.
Any wet application will ‘fail’ over time if over any serious curves or recesses.
It seems your trying different materials to achieve a good result, which is good, but the end result is down to the application, not necessarily the material!Have you got wrapping experience besides this roof?

I use ‘The Range’ 2000w heat guns. £9.99 plus £4.95 delivery (same delivery price no matter how many/what you buy!)
I buy 5, they have a one year warranty, when one breaks, I use another one and return the old one. I’ve been doing this since Oct last year and still have 5!
I use a heat gun everyday, 6 days a week, and found that pound for pound this works out better than buying the more expensive guns which last about the same period.
They are nothing special but have 2 heat settings which is more than enough to wrap happily every day!

Designer siting out there with a happy bank balance!

Fitted over 100 of the AA vans.
The kits we are supplied with the ‘AA’ comes in 4 parts.
2 tops and two bottoms to allow for the recess (there is a join)
Maybe the kit/supplier (SSDM) has changed but it was 3m control tack with the fade in the ‘AA’.

MemberJuly 29, 2011 at 6:45 pm in reply to: advice on using chrome wrap material please?I had a chrome panel (sample wrap) on my Range Rover and was pulled over by VOSA.
Had to strip it in front of them as apparently the ‘glare’ from the sun would cause other drivers to be blinded. (Like we get the sun!)
I see their point, but it still looks nice tho!
-
An imported vehicle outline imports straight. Text also types in straight. If that works on screen all you need is to take dimensions off the layout.
Personally, if its looks right, it is right. make sure the other side is pinned up first before fitting as it may look completely different depending on the design/font etc..
Matty
-
Totally correct Rob.
On a previous thread I said about the contract we were on for 400+ full wraps.
After a fair few material failures, Avery flew their guys out for a week to oversee all the fitters were following the correct fitting procedures.
We watched and learned from them and the failures become less and less.
Whatever experience we have, every day can be a school day.
-
I only asked as I’ve drilled out the rivets before and replaced after wrapping. Just seeing if you had another solution!
Neat looking vans and your right, it does feel better when its for yourself!

Hi Tom
The 1m stripe is an easy job for one and by no means ‘impossible’ for one person!
To heat your unit I would get a few convector heaters, £15 from argos, and enjoy the warmth!
Oil filled radiators really don’t tend to heat large spaces.
(sorry if I sound negative mate!)
Matt
-
sounds OK, I’d just leave the "we are in the business of making signs, not lending money" bit out.
Sounds a bit ‘cheap’ and unprofessional.
Matt
-
What I meant Martin is there isn’t a right or wrong way to fit vinyl ‘correctly’.
I’ve just finished a 10 week contract wrapping 400 transits including roofs with 20+ Avery trained and approved fitters.
We all had different techniques and different ways of fitting. All vans were approved and customer happy.
There are good fitters and bad but there is not a right or wrong way to fit vinyl.
If there was, I would be on the band wagon saying that wet applying is wrong and your c**p if you need to apply wet.
Matt
-
Been following this thread for a while now….
As a vehicle wrapper I never go wet. But that doesn’t mean I’ve never applied vinyl wet, I have!
I certainly wouldn’t now but wouldn’t condemn the method of wet applying.
If it works for Bob, carry on doing it! I fit different to my colleagues who are equally experienced. I do believe there is no right or wrong way to apply vinyl, just whats comfortable to the individual.
Matt
-
I’m sure John, wherever he is, will be raising a glass to.
Miss you mate….

As a vehicle wrapper the unit looks great as it is!

Hi Glenn
The customer assured me they were inside and had been overnight! I’m not that naive that I’d have driven there without checking!
The body shop had lied to the customer about the conditions, hence I walked away!
Matt
-
Went to wrap 2 bonnets and grilles yesterday which were at a body shop and were crash repairs. Drove to Swindon (2hrs) walked in reception and asked to be shown the vans.
The very nice manager asked if I wanted them inside? They were in the car park with 3+ inches of snow covering them.
I laughed and walked away. Invoice to follow.

To be honest, £600 isn’t a million miles away for supply and fit.

I had a lot of land with a previous house I owned. I tort my then partners son to drive my 4×4 on it. As I owned this land it was legal for him to drive all day on it. The minute he was off that land I was liable and breaking the law. He certainly wasn’t insured on the land or off it.
There is also talk that the M6 toll (Birmingham) is a private road and you can’t be done for speeding on it. Anyone got done for speeding?

We all have preferences to different vinyls, none are necessarily right, just our own personal choice!

There are better, far more superior materials for wrapping. The market is massive now and unless your in it using these metarials then only comment on what you feel comfortable using!

Super glue??? Try putting some on a piece of vinyl and see what happens!!
Printing a 15mm band that matches up, colour etc…???
Bit the bullet. Re-print and re-fit. (DRY)!!!
If the customer is a valued one, it will be noticed and passed on.
Its very easy to get a bad reputation in this game….
