MemberNovember 12, 2010 at 8:36 pm in reply to: can anyone advise with vinyl peeling from van?Have to agree with Peter. If applied properly shouldn’t really make a difference.
After all, applied cut letters have an edge exposed to rain etc..
I just think a combination of wet applied (NO,NO) and maybe wrong fitting conditions are to blame.

Hi Neil
As Martin says, one mans meat is another mans poison, and all that!
Grab a sample from various sources and try them out.
Different substrates will take different vinyl differently, if that makes sense?
What works on one vehicle with one material doesn’t necessarily work on another vehicle.
Good luck!

Hi Chris
Hard to put into words as you can imagine but instead of getting it close to the recess you leave a ‘tunnel’ which you apply after the recesses are heated.
Great instruction from the man himself, Hans from Avery.
As I said, its hard to explain in word, but it is the way forward I think in wrapping films….

Gotto be carefull what I say here…
We had supreme then switched to 900 for a week and the results were better.
Now back on Supreme and the feeling is that the recesses wont stand the test of time!
We had Avery over to ‘teach’ us the way to fit the film, completely different to how we all wrap, and I’m sure the guys on here on the contract will agree, we have learned alot!
There is a very strict way to work this film and I think we’ve got it now. No failing just 100% quality job!
You can easily do a bonnet by yourself, side panels etc…its basically idiot proof but its all about the post heating and the application method!
Come on then Ch**s and J**n and you others….Thoughts…?

Hi!
Had a lot of police station windows, external and internal with this stuff.
Horrible to say the least! One speck of dust and its buggered!
Plenty of soapy water and a hard rubber squeegee (bomb proofing squeegee we call it) are a must.
Personal advice, sub it out. Many on here specialise in this sort of job. Unless you’ve quoted to do the job 3 times and still make a profit I’d walk away. It’s nasty stuff, hard to fit unless in a controlled environment and expensive.
Don’t mean to put a downer on the job but I’m a fitter and have 25yrs experience, but I’d make it someone Else’s problem!!!
Matt
-
When a squeegee makes contact with vinyl/application tape it creates a friction. Wetting the vinyl/application tape cuts the friction and makes a smooth application.
I’m pretty sure Rob has a mathematical equation for this!!!

Point is WHY!!!
Try to do a job, and we get this…
H&S gone maaaaaad!!!

I believe, only in my past experience, they (the non paying customer) need to do a risk assessment, then a H&S course. First aid may help them to.
Matt 😀 😀

Totally agree Richard,
Had to wear a hard hat on a car park site last week to fit a logo on a connect bonnet. Lucky for me the backing paper didn’t land on my head!
Have been asked to leave site because my tool box had a heat gun which wasn’t pat tested…the list is endless.
On the news recently, a restaurant was closed due to having tooth picks on the tables.

Hi Rich,
Unfortunately the customer has a right to see proof of this.
I’ve a job coming up that has asked for a ‘Work at Height’ certificate.
It’s wrapping vans that involves using steps. !!!
I’m not sure if they need it for their insurance etc…but eh…customer always right!

Don’t be too hard on yourself!
Matt

Hi Dan
I agree with Chris, part wrap cast black and apply graphics on the top.
It a lot less hassle, easier (and cheaper) to replace if needs be and the black will be a stronger black.
Again, a day would be more than enough so with 3, your more than covered for any eventualities!

I couldn’t give the gaylander away! I had the 2.5 v6 for 11 months.

Eventually got rid of for 3k. (payed 9k for it!!)
Good riddance to a bad car.

When ordering the codes are M7-012 etc… hence the ‘M7’.
Still wouldn’t wrap a connect door with it let alone the rear (numberplate recess)….!!!

MemberAugust 23, 2010 at 6:39 pm in reply to: can anyone give some advice wrapping with metamark M7Hi!
Peter the range is M7, NOT MD7! Md7 is a printing vinyl I believe, M7 is their 7yr range.
Now, wrapping a connect in it…
There pretty flat so shouldn’t have too many issues except…
The roof has very deep grooves in it, even for wrapping material it won’t stay in and as such, has to fitted in ‘strips’.
Biggest no-no area as its visible is the rear pillars where the sides meet the back door. Quite a curve and even with wrap vinyl, takes a fair bit of heat to get it round.
In my opinion, M7 will fail within days.

Although a simple question you’ve asked, there are a multitude of answers!
Banner material, banner vinyl can be sourced from various suppliers! Look through the posts to find more info!

All I can tell you is that to the best of knowledge it was Pacific Blue. (Long time ago!)

MemberAugust 17, 2010 at 7:32 pm in reply to: Advice please on best material to install an aircraft tailThe only other input would be…
Check your insurance…Does it cover you for such jobs? I’m not trying to be funny or disrespect you in any way but PLEASE check! I had to take separate insurance out, albeit on bigger planes, to work on such aircraft.
Although you say jokingly about vinyl hitting the next planes windscreen the reality is quite frightening! If the vinyl separates, gets stuck in the rudder, pilot has no control…..
Vinyl on a van is one thing, vinyl on a plane, be it private or commercial, different ball game.
I hope I don’t come across too negative, not my intention, just want you to see the pro’s and cons of aircraft livery!!

MemberAugust 17, 2010 at 5:47 pm in reply to: Advice please on best material to install an aircraft tailHi Kev
A subject that has been covered many times here before…..
We did Virgin, BA, Thompson, Easyjet to name a few but as you stated your project isn’t going to the extremes their aircrafts go to!
We used/use 3M aviation vinyl. It’s perforated almost like contravision to allow for expansion and ‘cracking’. Obviously edge sealed after fitting.
Just my opinion but I wouldn’t risk using cast vinyl on a tail/fin and I’m sure my insurers wouldn’t either!

Any metallic/silver vinyl has a ‘matching’ side, as the carbon vinyl does.
Can’t see it to the eye until fitted then ‘WOW’ oh, yes it does!!

MemberAugust 13, 2010 at 5:39 pm in reply to: Thinking of doing a Vechicle Wrap CourseHi Craig,
Experience determines vinyl usage. A good fitter fits once.
Surely you can use a tape measure to see how much vinyl you need?
Sorry if this sounds negative but what are you after?

As Peter rightly points out, James is your man!
There is a lot of fitters who wrap who also teach, like myself, but we can’t certificate.
If you contact Nigel at Grafityp I’m sure you will find out all you need to know. They have been known to teach at your premises too!!

Matt
-
Hi Dave and welcome!
Whats going to be market?
Signage, printing?
Hope it works out for you!
Matt
-
Yes, that he means.
Any heating in/stretching will cause tension on the vinyl and MD5 will want to go back to its original form ie. pop out the recess.
Wrapping vinyl once heated will erase its memory and SHOULD stay put!
Matt
-
I agree with David.
Let the customer choose. Wrapping vinyl is called wrapping vinyl for a reason. Although there really isn’t a problem working the MD5 in and out the recess, any stretch at all will fail at a later date.
Matt
-
Happy honeymoon to you both!

No, I don’t think so. You do the reverse of what you did to take them off. (I think!)
