As Andy says…
Outdoor vinyl shouldn’t shrink so obviously done on the cheap or a long time ago.
The glue will easily clean off but if you do be aware that ghosting will be there and customer will need to no this

As Lynn says, depends on customer budget! To be honest if they want the sign on correx then the budget is low. Don’t waste time and money trying to make there sign look better than paid for!
Have you charged for design time or just material/fit?

MemberApril 5, 2010 at 2:29 pm in reply to: wrapping in deep recessed area’s, advice please?Hi Phillip
Yes it will distort the print, more noticeable if its text!
Depending on the material and fitting the recess shouldn’t be a major problem. Just be aware if your stretching material up to 2" you risk splitting and colour loss.
Good luck!

Will Tescos offer plotters for £150-£200 so that more people can be sign makers?

Why do you need to laminate straight away? If you no the jobs coming up why can’t you let the print degas before laminating? Are you really wrapping wet? See previous threads!
-
Philip mate, put the job back or plan further ahead.
Sounds harsh but it won’t work and will cost you more, money and potentially customer. If a jobs worth doing, its worth doing properly.
You can’t cut corners with wrapping, explain to your client about the laminate/hols ect. It will save you soo much hassle in the future.
Good luck mate and hope it works out.

Im pretty sure its a April fools joke Peter….
Who would fit an un-laminated print and brush/spray laminate afterwards?
Don’t get it myself….

Are you brushing it on, rolling it or spraying?

MemberMarch 31, 2010 at 9:21 pm in reply to: can someone help with a vehicle wrap issue? As Andy said!
Point out to the customer a wrap isn’t an alternative to a spray job.
Also, you can’t polish a terd…!!
-
1. Why?
2. How?
3. Why?!!!!!
-
Totally agree John, plus they look better and make better coffee!
Only issue I would have is time off to kids illness etc and physical power but as they a lot to gain from a descent job they would tend to make better employees. My wife helps me out alot of the time.
Also worth considering is that the unemployed of over 6 months are given two £500 vouchers. One is given to the new employer at the start of employment, the second after 3 months of working for you so you basically get £1000 to take a guy/gal of the dole.
Food for thought…
-
Good luck!
Hope it works out for you!

Hi Kieron
You’ll get loads of help from the guys here regarding sign/print etc but asking for freebies and how to get customers may get peoples back up!
We all want more work and have spent years building up reputations.
Are you working from premises or a plotter in your bedroom?
No offense intended but needs to be asked!

Hi Warren
Original post being 1.5m x 800mm window to be blacked out.
How much would a glazier charge to come out and look at it?
Then getting a customer to sign a disclaimer?
I may be wrong but I certainly wouldn’t pay to have a window blacked out only to sign to say if its breaks ive got to replace it!
Would you pay a mechanic to change your gearbox and sign a disclaimer to say it might right your car off?
Maybe I’m being nieve….
-
I hang my head in shame and curl in a ball in the corner!
Seriously tho, If a customer asks for a window to be ‘blacked’ out do you..
A. Walk away
B. Advise him on what might happen and loose the job/risk doing it
C. Fit the job and when he comes back with broken window deny all knowledge
Curious to no peoples thoughts…

Vws was changed to Vws2 which is a more usable material. I’ve never none it to show vehicle colour through before! Maybe to stressed or too much heat?!!
Macfleet quite rightly so…It loves you if you love it! Too cold, it snaps, to warm its like fitting clingfilm. As with all wrapping, environment is detrimental!

MemberMarch 25, 2010 at 3:21 pm in reply to: White Wrap Vinyl I Don’t Have To LaminateThe list is endless…As I’m sure you’ll hear!
It’s a matter of preference. For me VWS all day every day (KPMF) but each to there own!
But remember, If printed it needs to be laminated, regardless of the vinyl, I’ve never wrapped a vehicle in single colour vinyl that has been laminated.
-
Andy!
Are you trippin’ mate?
I fitted black vinyl at Mc Donalds windows in their drive thru at over 30 restaurants over the last couple of years and not one has cracked, broken or shattered!
As far as Andy T says yes the material is Blockout. Its used to stop light showing through on banners etc..
I’d love to here if black vinyl has broken anyone elses windows tho! (sorry Andy G)
-
Shock! I agree withe Peter!
Personally I wouldn’t go to see a customer for £70 let alone sign his van!
Can I ask what overheads you have..ie. plotter premises or (no offence) are you running a plotter from your bedroom and buying 6 month vinyl of freebay?
Sorry but someone had to ask!
-
As regard to question about vehicle wrap cutting print..
As long as its printed to fit the vehicle ie tiles and its cut to the prints bleed then the fitter adjusts to suit.
hope this makes sense…
-
Hi soyeb
As Luke said…
-
Hi stuart
I would and please listen, would only ever fit a bonnet wet/misted if the the vinyl was too tacky or it was to hot.
If you read was was posted throughout this thread you will understand and grasp reality.
If all sign companies could wrap, I’d be out of a job. If all wrappers could produce vinyl, sign companies would be out of jobs!
The two gel together but never the twain shall meet…. (chat.)

Stuart…Do a course or get aprofessionall in!

-
I agree Peter and as I said I wouldn’t wrap anything wet unless the circumstance demanded it.
Just for the record if you think a fin of a 747 is flat….think again!
-
Sorry Chris are we boring you? 😀 😀 😀
-
quote Robert Lambie:matty, what if the product/wrap fails, who is to blame then and do you still get paid?
Unfortunately Rob thats the nature of our business. We can go and try to resolve the issue but if its a material failure we don’t have a leg to stand on. The customer is always right! We just explain the situation and advise on materials to start with…not that they listen!
-
Just to add for Peter…
A bonnet is a large surface which is horizonta and fitted as suchl. A recessed panel is usually fitted vertically top to bottom so more control of the vinyl is had!
A good fitter can fit all day every day top to bottom on sides of vehicles, a good wrapper can do bonnets day in day out!
-
Sorry Peter, I should have said, we fit a lot of aircraft abroad and in India, italy, New Zealand it does get hot sitting in a cherry picker 40 ft up on tarmac!
Yes water is a cooling agent but as John rightly points out, its all about materials and conditions.
As a fitter I no what is ideal, but 65% of customers want a wrap done with there choice of materials and there conditions.
We have to work with what were given or no pay!
-
Hi Martin
No probs!Great point Rob BUT along with the water where does the air go….?!!
Just to clarify with Peter, I’ve been wrapping over 8 yrs and running my wrapping business for over 2yrs and there are times water is necessary.
we can’t determine our working environment or materials.
If you turn up to a job and its 90 degrees in the shade and you’ve got 9800 series vinyl there’s no choice but to do it with a misting.
Definitely only on bonnet and NEVER where there’s a recess
-
Hi Martin
As I said earlier, I personally would never apply anything wet, be it a wrap or flat panel, saying that windows I would yes!
The point I was trying to make is, if you have never wrapped anything before then a small ‘mist’ of spray does make life easier say on a bonnet. It will take 10 times longer to fit but it can be done.
Question being…If you had a ‘one hit’ wrap to do, no experience, would you do it wet?
Answer…NO! Unless you’ve got 5 days to spare and money to burn, get a professional in to do it! We sound expensive but a days labour versus the heartache and time is more cost effective! There is also the wrapping courses…..
-
With flat panels I don’t see any reason not to do them wet but as Rob said, if your competent enough to do a wrap you’ve got no need to do it wet!
I run a wrapping business and under NO circumstances would we ever use fluids on a wrap.
Good luck!
-
It just says ‘TNT’ to me…sorry!

Hi John
As Colin rightly pointed out, there are many instances where the road would be needed to closed to the public. This is a very long winded procedure and a lot of form filling/method statements etc..

B. If the wrap is fitted by a competent skilled fitter, there’s no reason for the customer to return the vehicle.
Failing that there’s always disclaimers…but don’t be surprised if the customer goes elsewhere!

Personally I use any cotton glove, any good chemist sell them, but I do have Avery ones, bit pricey but they do last well and all print supplies do a descent glove too.
A more important investment is a temperature controlled heatgun!
-
Have you tried a system restore? Just a thought.
Oh and an anti-cousin password on the Pc!!
-
Hi Bob
Yes definitely need a glove! It reduces the friction. Others no doubt will say invest in one of the 3m rollers, not my cup of tea but some fitters swear by them!
In answer to the ‘zip’ effect that normally is caused by the vinyl being too hot. Wrapping takes a lot of patience and time, remember, less is more!
It also occurs if heat is applied to wet vinyl! Are you doing the wrap wet?

I bought a box of ‘stickystuff remover’ and as good as it is it is a very messy product to use, and leaves a residue that vinyl won’ adhere to.
Great for getting labels of jars and chewing gum etc. but would never use it on big vinyls.

So if you took delivery of a cherry picker, took instructions how to ‘drive’ it and then drove it over rough ground carrying a 8′ X 4′ perspex sheet and ran it into the customers car your insurance would cover it?
Can I have their details please?
For me to cover my liability insurance for my fitting services, an access license was mandatory.
Has this gone of the subject now…? Sorry again Rob! -
This ones for you Peter….
I’m a ‘newbie’ with over 23 years experience within the sign trade, as some of the Gold Members will verify.

Just my input…….To hire a cherry picker/scissor lift you need/should hold an access license or your liability insurance will be not be covered.

MemberJanuary 17, 2010 at 12:26 am in reply to: What did you want to be when you were older? My story…
Wanted to leave school to be a graphic designer (’85)
Got a YTS position with a sign company.
Spent the days blowing up letters from a letterset catologue on a photocopier, sticking the letters on vinyl, cutting round them to produce the text needed to then apply it to a piece of perspex hand cut to fit inside a hand cut panatrim frame to realise the boss had measured the fascia wrong!
Went on to do 2D and 3D CAD as a draughtsman and back to sign design and fitting.
THEN wrapping came in! Saw what my employers were paying contractors and thort.mmm…Ill have some of that and havn’t looked back since, although the comfort of full time employment would relieve alot of family stress!!
As Jillbeans said she wanted to be a mum, I wanted to be a dad and a very proud one now, and if my daughter wants to follow my steps I’d support her all the way. Modelling that is!!

Isn’t Tescos marketing such that if your there to have your eyes tested you’ll be tempted to buy something from the food/drink/Dvd section?
I am with you on the supporting local shop keeper/farm shop ect. but in this day and age morals are slightly overuled by cost.
As in our industry, quality and professionalism outway the cheaper ‘cowboys’ but as the larger sign company Franchises prove, they can buy in bulk, with discount, and provide a cheaper service without loosing the quality.
Isn’t that what Tesco’s do?

MemberJanuary 16, 2010 at 9:59 pm in reply to: Tesco offering embroidered schoolwear? To be fair to Nik, the school our son goes to has a specific uniform that can’t be bought at retail outlets such as Primark. They HAVE to be bought already embroided from the school and the price is high, quality poor.
If our local Tesco was to go into competition with the schools choice of manufacturer I would have no problem buying from them, as we all want a good quality product for a fair price.
I would be interested in knowing where people purchase there baked beans….!!

Here in Northampton we have a ‘company’ that offers ‘Any van graphics for £100 fitted’.
Luckily for me they have a cheap plotter and even cheaper vinyl and a 1980’s clip art cd!
The customer soon realises this and comes to the real sign company’s!
I feel guilty about charging them to strip and fit. Not!!
£100 or £50 suits there budget. £300 gets them what they want.

MemberJanuary 9, 2010 at 8:39 pm in reply to: is there a special material required for aircraft graphicsHi Pete
Over the years we’ve done many aircraft, here and abroad and yes, the vinyl is special aviation vinyl. (3M)
Its got tiny perforations in it, similar to contravision but not as obvious.
This allows the vinyl to ‘breath’ as the temperatures and speeds are pretty extreme up there!!
Not too sure about about light aircraft tho as only worked on big passenger aircraft.
