    HI Guys,

The gold leaf is the only one we do have , 610mm wide only, plenty in stock.

    Regards

  • Sorry guys , i couldn’t get logged on for a while , yes we have 3551 rapid Air in stock now 760 and 1370mm wide , yes its more expensive than 3551 but not by huge amount. Oracal USA website sells it as suitable for Corrugations and Rivets but not wrapping so 2 dimensional not 3 dimensional stretching.
Avery did lose the court case and are launching an alternative soon i think.

  • Hi there,

Anti graffiti film is normally a hard coated polyester that doesn’t allow solvents to key to it , therefore it just sits on the surface , a mild solvent should be enough to clean it away , isoprop should do the trick no problem.

  • Hi Shane,

I didn’t realise you knew Manfred ?i have been at exhibitions where other peoples vehicle wrappers have come over to see how Manfred does it !!, he is the only person Orafol use, Oracal do know about it but say they had nothing to do with it i guess if it helps the customer they will be happy with it,we put a fully illustrated instruction leaflet in with every bottle we sell. Have you got "rapid air" over there yet ?would be interested to know what you think of it , our stock has just arrived in 3551.

  • Who have you been speaking to at Europoint ? I will ask the relevant BM to contact you.

  • Sounds like the outgasing situation , if there are disappearing then that’s fine.

  • Hi Guys,

Its not recommended by any vinyl manufacturer at all , its a product sold by Manfred who does all of Orafols demonstrations , he uses it for his wrapping and i believe has patented the recipe, i have a pdf file i can e-mail anyone who wants it with instructions etc.
It isn’t oily .. Rob has used it ,it is a liquid but drys very quickly and leaves an invisible dry coating on the surface which a) reduces the initial grab of the adhesive and b) lets you effortlessly push bubbles out to the sides.

It isn’t expensive … check with Rob …its sold in the UK exclusively by Europoint in 500ml bottles.

    Hope this helps

  • Bubbles when applying or after its been applied ?

If the panels are GRP or fairly recently painted the surface may still be outgasing particularly if its a dark colour and a hot day , because the cast vinyl is thin the gases pass through the surface and they will disappear , if that’s whats causing them.

    Cheers

  • HI Dave,

Ask Robert how he managed to wrap the 10 dairy vehicles so quickly , he used 3651 which is the digital equivalent to 651… he used a product called Command Form to help, it appears to be dry and you apply it dry but it allows the air to be pushed out and gives the vinyl a very low initial tack , instructions for use come in every bottle. Its very new so does not explain in anyway why Robert always applies dry!!!!!

Hope this helps …. Ask Robert what he thought.

  • Hi there,

Cant make any comment about the bubbles (Teaching Gran to suck eggs and all that )other than not something that has ever been mentioned before …. stickiness yes although not lately … Oracal now put a primer on the reverse of the film to promote a better adhesion to the film , this then reduces the perceived initial tack of the vinyl and allows it to be a bit more forgiving ….. one of Oracals casting lines was down for a week lately and stocks got a bit low , could be some material made prior to the improvements that hasn’t turned. Comments such as "Chalk and Cheese" have been used by a couple of big users to compliment the improvements, much easier to weed as well.

May 26, 2006 at 9:00 pm in reply to: sprocketing my own vinyl, who would do it?

If someone has bought a machine i wouldn’t advertise it , they should be paying Gerber a licensing fee to use their sprocketing configuration , that’s partly why sprocketed material is more expensive per m2 than non-sprocketed.
As everyone has said , very few things you cant find sprocketed already , if its a one off speak to a friendly signmaker nearby who will cut the unsprocketed stuff for you ?

  • HI There,

That is no problem but if you have a VersaCamm why don’t you just use one of the digital grades that come in 760mm wide unsprocketed , you get the benefit of a grey re positionable adhesive and PE lined heavy weight backing sheet for lay-flatness.
Face film is treated to reduce static and give you better dot definition.

    Hope that helps

    HI Brian,

Its sold by the metre so wont break the bank, 2 grades kept in stock it absorbs uv light very quickly then discharges it very slowly when the lights go out.

given that its effect will be minimal on a van , would it not be better to use a pale coloured normal vinyl ?

    Hi There,

Best bet is the material manufacturers or machine agents web-site , alternatively all OEMs will profile a material for you if its supplied to them usually FOC as they want you to be happy with the equipment , have to say in my experience visiting people with Mimakis all get excellent results using the above or nearest equivalent settings , it seems to be a very forgiving machine.
see http://www.orafol.de will be a start.

    Hi Dave,

Both products come in a Blue , i would say it was mid rather than dark , you could cover a white sheet in size 1220 x 3050 , this would reduce your waste as 6 x 4 comes out twice exactly , cover the board to the exact colour you want and have the better of the two products for the job. easy for me to suggest of course !! if its in a frame you would need to leave a small gap for expansion or better still use spring loaded edges to allow for movement when the weather changes.

    HI There,

Not many Signmakers have a wall saw , if anything they may have a bench saw or maybe one of those hydraulic air blades for trimming down , all suppliers cut to size the substrates you are talking about which saves you this expense.
Tends to be the bigger companies who will buy one themselves.

Forex for me , Gatorfoam has to be bought by the box apprx 18 sheets for 8 x 4 5mm , if you are using something indoors and you want it lighter try the new Forex Smart.
Gatorfoam tends to be supplied if specified via GPM who import from the states, they sell to other Merchants who can ship it around the UK.

  • Sorry Hugh i forgot who you bought from, We felt that as it was such a massive benefit having a cast at a calendered price we chose not to discount to ……………. to the same level, hoping people would buy from us , they do sell other vinyls after all.
Rob will let you know what you could be paying.

  • Hey !!!! Glad to hear it Marcella, what has happened is you have loaded prices on Alucolour and they don’t automatically trip over to our new product Ability bond , i will load them accordingly , ill give you a call to sort out the credit.

  • HI There,

Few things — Steele Signs , tell whoever you spoke to i said it was Ok , rather we lost a couple of quid than let you down.

Hugh — You should be getting UKSG prices regardless and not list.

Shane — Orafol have announced 37 new metallic colours on 851 cast , we haven’t discussed bringing them in over here but would probably consider more readily if it was 751 cast maybe that will follow but no news yet.

    Hope this helps guys.

  • HI There,

Robert — Shame on you !!!! Shane you are spot on.

    651 = 5yr
    551 = 7yr
    751c = 8yr
    851 = 10yr

Its a long story ……. bottom line is 551 is our least stocked and because least popular , as 751cast is priced as a premium calendered vinyl we only really push 551 at customers that wont use a cast ,someone took an abnormally large amount and cleared our stock , we do have 34 rolls due in very soon.

When these situations occur i would offer the 751c charged at the 551 price.

  • HI There,

What surface is the vinyl going onto ?

Reason i ask is some surfaces notably GRP sided vehicles outgas over a very long period of time, Cast vinyl is very thin so slow outgasing will dissipate through the film , the black as Jill suggests aborbs the heat and reaches a higher temperature which speeds up the outgasing which in turn exaggerates the bubbles caused , if you strip away the bubbled area and the adhesive is stringy then its an outgasing problem.
Also type of paint could be the reason 2 pack paint is another that is dry to touch quite quickly but vinyl manufacturers will recommend upto 3 weeks before trying to apply vinyl for the same reason.

    Hope this helps.

    Hi There,

If you print onto the white you will only be able to stick it to the outside of the window, you need to reverse print onto clear then back it up with white , then when you stick it on it looks the right way round from the outside.
    Make sense ?

    HI All,

Can confirm Europoint definitely do Forex Classic — however the mill have discontinued the Gloss version so we now do Ability Gloss , we also felt the Ability range had more vibrant colours so switched the colours to that aswell.
Forex Classic in White is kept in the widest range of sizes and thicknesess.

    Hope that clears things up.

    HI Guys,

I can shed some light on this , Our price lists are printed from the system , they are bespoke for each customer , this way you get prices for the materials you use, or ,are likely to use ,rather than a multitude of others that would make the price list bulky and mostly irrelevant.
If you are a UKSG member down load them from the site, swatches are available and a new range of swatch books are due out very soon.
A general all products list (without any special prices) can be e-mailed to you in a matter of seconds if you ring the branch.

I am assuming you are printing using solvent inks ?

    see http://www.sensitisers.co.uk

Various options for the solvent machine from 165mic / 270mic , advises that may avoid the need for lamination with some printers , surface is a matt white / scratch resistant and has a grey back in most cases.

All are polyester and therefore very stable which reduces the risk of curl.

    Hi There,

Because pantone is a printed ink chart , the colours are translucent printed onto white paper , to get a truly accurate match you need to either manufacture with a white adhesive (Avery and Orafol can do this) or manufacture a translucent vinyl if its being applied to a white background , both would need a min make of apprx 300m2. Better to get a close as possible on a standard colour eh ???

Thanks for checking our swatches Marcella.

    HI There,

You wont get something that ticks all the boxes, i am aware of someone with a Roland that has printed Oracal hi-tack (rubber adhesive for low energy surfaces) on one of their machines , this would help with the first two requests , you wont find a cast vinyl with this type of adhesive, Oracal 3951 is one of many digital cast vinyls for the VersaCamm.

    HI Guys,

Hugh , If where you are buying it from is saying its suitable from banners they are mis-leading you , 451 series is the banner grade product.
If you use 651 and roll the banner up then un-roll it there is every chance you will get “fluting” where the vinyl has stretched and wont shrink back , good if its on a vehicle but not on a banner.

    Hope that helps

    HI There,

This is a tricky one , the vinyl is Ultra removable but it doesn’t come in a format for printing on a Versa Camm , why cant you use heat on a mirrored acrylic surface ? what happens ?

The repositionable adhesive allows you to manouver large area colour graphics without ruining your job if you make a mistake , ie lift and try again, it does become permanent after 24 hrs but will remove cleanly with heat.

Leboard has a 125mic Aluminum skin as opposed to Alucolour at 300mic , i would just use it for flat panels where its being supported and pay a little more for fabrication jobs. Majority of this product is used for flat panels.

Like with masking tape after a period of time which is dependent on the conditions its stored or exposed to , Paper app tape adhesive emulsifies hence a shelf life of 6 months , this makes it almost impossible to remove, if you want to leave anything masked for a length of time then the clear film version is made for this.

I was at a 2 day conference about this recently , its a huge subject with many areas for discussion , in terms of instore TV , Tesco plan to have “Tesco TV” but are charging the brands for advertising so using them as a form of revenue, initial trials in stores using only plasma or LCDs had limited success as very often we have become so used to having a box in the corner on and not watching or listening to it, ASDA had some in certain isles in test stores and only a relatively small percentage of shoppers noticed they were there !! OLED and POLEDs are the next generation and they will certainly add something new.
The general consensus ,At the moment, is that it works well alongside traditional POP and perhaps only about 5% of traditional POP will be replaced by this technology in the next 5 years.
I have a copy of the presentations on CD if anyone is really interested , i think the large Screenprinters may have more to be concerned with than the average Signmaker.

You could use any one of the various aluminum composite sheets on the market , colours are available in 3050 x 1500 , this would give you a base for your signs, a silver colour may blend in more easily with the colour of the corrugated fascia or just white if neutral is preferred.
The selling point for these products over Aluminum is the lightweight and no scrap value. long term exterior use is not a problem.

November 6, 2005 at 1:52 pm in reply to: woudl i apply etch wet onto large windows?

    Hi there,
Vinyl with an emulsion(water based) adhesive will go milky when applied wet as the water will mix with the adhesive and change its structure , it wont harm its adhesive properties which is why some economy films have an emulsion acrylic adhesive , to avoid the milky effect use a solvent acrylic adhesive as solvent and water don’t mix !!

  • HI Guys,

Proper vehicle wrap vinyl is also cast (taxi wrap is not the same as it doesn’t cover the whole vehicle) its just thicker ,which makes it easier to handle large area sheets. It should also have a re positionable adhesive which means you don’t need to get it right first time as lifting and re-applying within reason is easier. All digital print vinyl has the same adhesive for this reason.

Thanks John , Oracal high tack , its a rubber based adhesive for low energy surfaces.

  • Paper application tape only has a shelf life of 6 months , after this the adhesive begins to emulsify which makes it very difficult to pull away from the roll , the adhesion value drops significantly aswell so it will struggle to lift the letters. Because its a paper liner air can get to the adhesive which dries it out causing this problem.

While its good you want to use this more expensive material the most economic option would be 10mm Correx or equivelent, its done in 8 x 4 or 3000 x 762 for exactly that purpose , and also Site boards.
Very lightweight and very strong , depends what quality you want to achieve.

  • Stating the obvious here but heating after to KEEP in the recesses only works with cast vinyl , you are re-setting the vinyl by heating it up beyond whatever temperature it will reach during its working life thus stopping it from re-setting during hot weather.

  • Carrie — you are spot on — not rolling it only referred to Normal vinyl , banner vinyl is fine, we always recommend to keep it as flat as stress free as possible for 24 hours while the adhesive cures properly.

    Cheers

  • Hi guys, DONT roll it , banner Vinyl is very heavily plasticized, when a banner is rolled , stored , straightened etc in different temperatures the PVC moves so the banner Vinyl needs to as well.
Regular vinyl is far more stable (You don’t want normal vinyl shrinking etc) so if thats applied then the banner is rolled the banner stretches , when you un-roll it the banner goes back to its original shape but the vinyl remains stretched and you may”Piping” on the vinyl.
If you’re keeping it flat for 1 day though normal vinyl will be fine

  • Best bet in the UK is Rennicks , they offer a trade service for this sort of thing , based in Runcorn 01928 579966 , they supply Nikalite reflective film from Nippon Carbide in China i think, if they cant supply kits in small quantities they will certainly put you intouch with one of their customers who can.

  • Hi Guys ,

We dont stock Dibond but if no-one gets back to you from Alcan let me know and i will chase him up, they have 2 sales managers in the UK it must be one of them that posted it, ill get them to send a CD to Robert and he can copy and post them on to you.

    Cheers

  • Have a customer who uses 450mic flexible soft pvc for this (self cling), he reverse prints, then laminates with a 3m adhesive. It might be worth looking at if the volume is there.

    Hi Phil,

Please contact me at Europoint , i dont recognise your name and generally see most account forms, i can get to the bottom of why we apparantly dont want to know and hopefully resolve it.

  • HI Guys and Gal,

The reason nothing is sticking is that Rubber wellies are a low energy surface , this stops acids , oils, grime etc from attacking the rubber but also stops adhesive and ink from biting in aswell!! Oracal high tack is a Solvent rubber based adhesive made for such surfaces , you could print a yellow background and cut out the logo for the wellies, worth a try maybe?

  • Hi Dex,

Dewi is right about the 2 year polyester , its cheap but not for an extended outside life check your members price list, a cast chrome 5 year film will be availbale soon at around £16.00lm , Metamark do a carbon fibre effect- no idea of price though.

A&P and Cox get deliveries from Avery all the time , they should be able to buy the vinyl you need in from Holland , whether they stock in the UK or not .

    Hi Guys,

Europoint dont keep 620 it would be either 1620 or 1640 , we call it Oracal 100 as its a 100mic face film compared to Fascals 80mic , both are water based adhesives and will go milky when applied wet, to save with the numbers just ask for Oracal Wet Tack , same face film but with a solvent adhesive which allows for putting on wet without the milky effect.

Robert i have some PMs and dont want people to think i am rude by not answering , can you help? promise to keep it non-biased, Dewi if you read this the Mirrored leaf effect is available but still struggling on the Bright chrome , Orafol have advised end March now.

  • HI Guys,

As you ask, all Orajet Vinyl 3164/3651/3551 and 3951 has grey re-positionable adhesive, it makes for easier working with large colour graphics, its a solvent adhesive.

Cant help wonder how this is different from Solicitors/ Lawyers giving you an estimate for a job in hand then charging you far more!!! This would appear even worse but it must be legal.
I just feel it for you a bit Phil as a £1400 job is a nice one to get. If i put a price in writing and the customer gets back to me and says he needs help or has a budget to get to etc ( I fall for them all ) ill help if i can, but i dont have to re-quote ,i guess the difference is you knew something possibly underhand was going on whereas my help would have been in good faith.

You could print onto white self cling, while it will be re-usable to a point you would need to keep the release paper handy for putting the sticker back on to before re-applying elsewhere, bit of a pain!

is 60mic thick ( Very thin for callandered film )
Solvent acrylic adhesive ( Not emulsion acrylic)

    To name but a few

3951 is recommended for both Solvent and Eco Solvent , there are profiles available on disc by either the stockist or on Rolands website, Stephen in Auckland when you say “coated cast” assuming you dont mean for a waterbased Printer ? Vinyl for solvent media isnt coated as such it has been through an extra level of checking for flaws and has also been treated to reduce static and hold the dot but its not a physical coating.
Robert if you contact your supplier he can get you say 5m of 3951 to test for the site, if you ask nicely maybe some 290f as you should always overlaminate for best long term results.

You are right Shane , its 3951 and stocked in the UK in sizes 760 / 1370 + (1520 in a couple weeks)for the Eco and Full solvent machines , orafol recommend 290f cast overlaminate to go with it and is stocked in the same widths.

  • Coburn have a distributer in Wales or they did not long ago , can buy by the metre , Metamark do Carbon effect and other strange things , Chalkboard vinyl etc.
Coburn will tell you if you ring them or e-mail. Ritrama do Prismatic film although not a vast range.

A flat bed digital print direct to substrate would probably cost around £25m2 for the print + apprx £4.50 for an 8 x 4 board so apprx cost for 6 full colour boards would be £80 , an Inca Eagle flat bed could probably print an 8 x 4 board in about 10-15 mins once they had the artwork , similar machines are around, if your stuck for someone in your area to get a quote fromlet me know , if you shop around you might get it cheaper than that , Digital print to Vinyl would cost a similar amount but the hassle of applying it unless you had a laminator would not be worth while.
