  • why did the vinyl i applied go all milky?

Posted by sdcurry on February 17, 2005 at 9:35 am

We had a nightmare job last night and i was hoping someone can come to save us. We had some screen printed free issue graphics to apply to a customers shop windows, size about 2.7m x 3m in 3 pieces, this was easy or so we thought. How wrong could we be… 😀 🙂 🙁 😕 😳 😥
The adhesive reacted with the application fluid (RapidTac) and all went milky. All this happened with the customer stood behind watching.
The graphics only covered about a third of the area of vinyl, the rest was just clear so it was a big problem. Please can someone help us and tell me why this has happened and how can we avoid it, as we have to do them again next week. Just make it more interesting they had used two makes of vinyl, both went milky.. one had "Oracal print vinyl, permanent" printed on the backing, the other had "Fasson Fascal Permanent" on the backing.

    Thanks

    Steve

Steve sounds like they are water based adhesives.

Not sure on the fasson, but what number is it for the oracal – 551, 640 or what?

They should eventually dry clear if that is the problem, but I’d have a better idea if I know the series number

    Cheers mate

I don’t know what range of Oracal it is, they came from France and the customer can’t find out, as they came through the franchise. There’s nothing on the backing paper that gives any clues either, Just printed with “ORACAL” in large and “PRINT VINYL, permanent” under it in a light grey. We tried applying a section with just water, this didn’t make much odds.
Customer came in this morning with some pics of it, overnight the slight milky areas have turned thick white !!!!

Why don’t you phone EuroPoint who supply Oracal in the UK.

sounds definately like a water based glue to me.

I have shot the question off to my Oracal importer/distributor here in OZ. It is nearly 11pm now so he is unlikely to get the email until the morning, although he does work stupid hours like me, so you never know.

Hopefully someone else can answer this in the mean time.

    Sorry mate

    Cheers

I was right, he is working stupid hours like me….

    This was his reply;

It sounds like ORACAL 620 Print vinyl -a screenprint vinyl with an aqueous acrylic, removable adhesive.

Users shouldn’t use a solvent-based application fluid on a water-based adhesive. Even if this film is wet applied, clear vinyl on glass will be the only time you see the milky white adhesive. Suggest screenprinting with ORACAL 1630 Print Vinyl with solvent adhesive.

Probably not what you want to hear, but an answer none-the-less

    Cheers

    Hi Guys,

Europoint dont keep 620 it would be either 1620 or 1640 , we call it Oracal 100 as its a 100mic face film compared to Fascals 80mic , both are water based adhesives and will go milky when applied wet, to save with the numbers just ask for Oracal Wet Tack , same face film but with a solvent adhesive which allows for putting on wet without the milky effect.

Robert i have some PMs and dont want people to think i am rude by not answering , can you help? promise to keep it non-biased, Dewi if you read this the Mirrored leaf effect is available but still struggling on the Bright chrome , Orafol have advised end March now.

    Cheers, Dewi
