Any tips on how to stop bad bubbling on cast vinyl on vans?
Posted by Jan Chambers on March 8, 2006 at 12:56 pmAny tips on how to stop bad bubbling on cast vinyl on vans – I’ve had a particular problem with black vinyl for some reason but not with red or blue. I’ve a van coming in at the weekend and am just wondering if anyone has any special tips on how to stop the bubbling? Jan

sure its not dirt trapped under it
im struggling to understand how your having trouble with just black

Are you applying in the sun?
Sometimes a hot surface can cause bubbles.
And black is a great absorber of heat.
I know it’s not what Rob would advise,
but get thyself some Rapid Tac application fluid and apply wet.
I get far less bubbles this way.

I’ve been puzzled about it just being black as well as it’s the same make
of vinyl as the blue and the red. I wondered if the bubbles just showed up more on black but the red and the blue seem almost perfect. I know it’s not sun but I’ll try using the RapidTac and see if it makes a difference.
Thanks for the advice. Jan -
HI There,
What surface is the vinyl going onto ?
Reason i ask is some surfaces notably GRP sided vehicles outgas over a very long period of time, Cast vinyl is very thin so slow outgasing will dissipate through the film , the black as Jill suggests aborbs the heat and reaches a higher temperature which speeds up the outgasing which in turn exaggerates the bubbles caused , if you strip away the bubbled area and the adhesive is stringy then its an outgasing problem.
Also type of paint could be the reason 2 pack paint is another that is dry to touch quite quickly but vinyl manufacturers will recommend upto 3 weeks before trying to apply vinyl for the same reason.Hope this helps.

Thanks Cammy. It was a van that the vinyl was going on to and it was new. It was also stringy when coming off so I guess outgasing is the problem. I’ll watch out for this in future. Do you know of any way round the problem, apart from waiting three weeks before signing?

He’s a clever man that Cammy. Just taught me something too 😕

Thank God he’s clever – I’d never have figured the bubbling out and
it was driving me nuts. I even thought the vinyl was faulty at one point and tried a different batch.
