  • vinyl to match pantone – any ideas?

Posted by Martin Grimmer on January 25, 2006 at 11:10 am

    Hi,

Have been given pantone references PMS288 (a blue) and PMS 376 (a green). Are there any vinyl manufacturers that provide a close match to this? (my pantone swatch not yet here).

    Any help appreciated.

    Ta.

Rather than starting a new topic I might aswell add to this one.

Can anyone (marcella perhaps?) :lol1: give us a clue on vinyl for a reference we have been given which is: PMS 354 ??

    Thanks 😀

    Carrie,

MACal 9849-36 bright green is a good match
Oracal 751-062 light green is similar but not just as close as the mactac vinyl.

    😀

    Hi There,

Because pantone is a printed ink chart , the colours are translucent printed onto white paper , to get a truly accurate match you need to either manufacture with a white adhesive (Avery and Orafol can do this) or manufacture a translucent vinyl if its being applied to a white background , both would need a min make of apprx 300m2. Better to get a close as possible on a standard colour eh ???

Thanks for checking our swatches Marcella.

I thought I’d add to this topic rather than start a new one. . would it be possible I could have some assistance from you lovely people ! :lol1:

Typical sods law, I renewed my pantone swatches last year at great expense. Since then I’ve only used them once or twice. . . went to use them last night and bosh. . .. they’ve gone.

I am trying to find a close match to c660 and c298 both blues. .

    thanks in advance

Oracal 751-056 ice blue matches to 298 pretty well, but there’s no close match to the other shade among my swatches 🙁 sorry…. let the side down this time! there’s colours similar in tone but a few shades out I’m afraid.

    Marcella you’re a star thank you 🙂

I’ll have a ring around the suppliers regarding c660 and see what they suggest. I have just wasted half the morning looking for these bloody swatches. . . I’ve got a nasty suspicion that I’ve left them at a clients 😥

    Dave

Obviously don’t know how much of the vinyl pieces you need but sometimes when stuck like this, we print a flat block of the Pantone colour on our digital printer, transfer this to the plotter and then cut lettering etc. from the coloured block.

This method has saved our bacon many times for small signs.

    Cheers…

382c is urggggghh nasty colour – Mactac 9849-24 Green Yellow sorta close.

Not sure on the blue as 274c is made with half Rubine Red / Blue so is dark but purple ish. I can’t match it here.

    Hi Martin

Yes I had considered this, I had also considered printing the whole job and just flood coating the 2 di-bond panels. ( non illuminated shop sign 5000mm x 1000mm ). However I still have slight reservations about using print for long term signage, I also feel in this case because the artwork is so simple, vinyl will produce a more vibrant sign that will retain its colour for far longer.

It can be quite a challenge explaining to a customer, the difficulties of matching pantone colours without sounding negative. Of course any colour match is possible but at what price ?
I am trying to find a middle ground, stock vinyl colours that are close enough to the pantone refs quoted.

    Hi George,

sorry I missed this ….!!! But had a look anyway. The 382 is not too bad as a match to the Mactac reference already given, it’s also not too far from 3M 100-449.
As for 274, well, there’s almost a match, just a tiny smidgen different in Avery. It’s 969 Passion Blue Pantone 275.
