how can i join backing paper?
Posted by Paul Rollason on January 17, 2006 at 11:39 amHi All
Just trying out a new vinyl and when I loaded it into the machine I noticed a wide (50mm) ridge running across the vinyl.
On further investigation I found that the backing paper had a join in it mid roll.
Is this normal because I have never come across it before.
Would it affect cutting
Weird

We used to get master rolls like that all the time. It can cause the plotter to bump a bit if the join is raised up a bit. So be careful.

Paul this kind of thing happens when the manufacturer has to put a new roll of backing paper onto the coating line when producing vinyl.
When one roll runs out another is used and so the end of the old roll is joined to the start of the new roll so the vinyl production can carry on un-hindered, hence your join.

We get this quite often. Our manufacturers always put a yellow tab on the end of the roll to mark where the join is so we can work around it.

Yeah I’m with you mate… not good at all, I’ve came across it once or twice
Wouldn’t complain if the roll was half price though 😉

Forgot to say, the little yellow tag says they have added a couple of yards of material to the roll to compensate for the join. 😀

i havent seen this for years… i remmeber a while back i used to get it with our gerber 4b rolls of cast from spandex. but that was like 10 years ago… i have only seen it once or twice since… that said, i dont run our cutters anymore but ide still expect to see them now and again.
from memory, spandex had the little tabs in place too marek. -
had a joint on a roll of oracal the other week had never seen it before either. Was no tab though just a joint didn’t affect the cutter

Have had two 25 mt rolls joined to make a 50 mt roll & not been told about it 4 times now. only found out whilst cutting, then it’s too late, one cut line straight across your logo or lettering, not nice.
Also had 2 rolls of, i assume 25 mt, 1 roll slid inside the other but not joined at all.
All mine MacTac 9800 & all from same supplier.L J

I’ve been in the rotten position of working for a vinyl supplier. Sometimes the master rolls would come in with joins in, or sometimes we would join half rolls together to make a full one. It was in our terms of sale that joints would be avoided if possible but not guaranteed. It is annoying when there is no tab telling you of an impending join. Frankly, I would rather get 2 25m rolls than a joined 50m one. At least you know where the roll ends.

we have had rolls joined on the vinyl not backing , with no warning ! with a warning could maybe have worked round it , but then again always wind out more than enough so you won’t be caught out

It’s the price we pay for having suppliers who will sell you a 5 metre roll.
At Fineline/Autac we did 4 stocktakes a year and the amount of money sitting on the shelves in part rolls was frightening. Counting and measuring every 3 months wasn’t much fun either. 1/4 million squids of vinyl takes a lot of counting!

Had a similar problem with a printing vinyl half way through the job it was joined.. Rang the supplier ..they appolagised and sent a full roll as a replacement

Hi Kevin,
Have never seen a splice in Oracal in 13 years or heard of one, they guarantee no splices , anyone gets one ever please keep it and let me know.
Cheers
