The trouble i have is this.

Matt laminate with a new blade is set at max to 120 on the Roland.
Gloss laminate needs to go 130, with this it struggles to make a clean cutt.
I up it to 150 – 160 and it goes straight through it all and rips it up. 🙁

Heat lamination is very noticeable when laminating exhibition display products. When laminating these cold the finish is nowhere near as good.

It’s not as good with vinyl either to be honest, the heat makes all the difference.

Thats interesting Shane…….i’ve got a Roland 540 Pro3, i’ve been thinking of changing over to a cheaper ink but i never go through with it. There can be a considerable saving in the pocket but there are so many people say its a risk for the print heads on the machine.
Are you still finding everything OK?
When did you move over to these inks?
What do yo think to the colours and quality of print?

You need to get the right work surface for them, we use a large kitchen worktop at 488cm in length.
This way we can keep the surface clean as the ink does occasionally press onto the work surface leaving the banner with slightly less colour on the hem. This happens we print and hem on the same day when we are rushing to get the jobs out quick.
Its a brilliant bit of kit, i wouldn’t want to be without it now. Saves a lot of time.
Like Rob says you need to be doing a few banners.

I agree with the welding machine………….
…..i bought one at Sign UK a couple of years ago and its been a great buy.
Hemming takes a fraction of the time that it used to with the tape, i can also weld banner sections together. We can produce bigger banners this way by welding sections together. Do it in no time at all with a solid weld.

Hydrosol is a pretty good bet for pop ups, they do 2 types. The thinner gram for rollers and the thicker for pop ups.
We get good results with this material.

I don’t blame you on this recess.
I did a part wrap on one of these over a year ago, the guy brought it back two months ago because one of the sides has popped, the other side and the rear are both perfect.

I enquired today at Granthams about the bulk there bulk ink system for the Roland.
They still use a cartridge method but they chip the cartridge, you then refill the cartridge with their ITL Evo-sol inks.
The price works out at £100 for 1 litre which is considerably less than what i pay now, they say that the switch over runs seamlessly with the eco sol max. There is no need to drain the existing inks out, clean and then re-fill with the new inks.
    Has anyone tried these inks?

I hate it when printing a long banner and i’ve been keeping the banner slack from the roll, (so that the printer does not have to pull at the banner resulting in the printer heads rubbing over the banner and ruining the print). Then a customer walks in and i forget about the banner, the next thing i remember about the banner but it is too late!! I rush back to the machine but find the drag from the print head all over the print, i start ranting and raving and kicking the sh*t out of the nearest employee 😀 i mean cardboard box!!
I used to have to start again but now i print the end section and weld the two together, the welders are pricey but they reduce stress (until you burn yourself on one), then you want to murder the cardboard box, i mean employee!!

Looks like theres a bit of stress out there!!
I’ve calmed down on the issue after a weekend of camping with the family.
However i am still going to go and give him my bill, i’ll let him know he has thirty days to pay, after that he will receive reminders and letters and then if it hasn’t been paid the solicitors will be involved.
I like the photo idea Harry.

I don’t mind people going out to get several quotes for a fascia sign, i understand that setting a business up can be an expensive game. What gets my goat is the signmaker up the road who has said that he’ll do the sign using my design. He hasn’t even bothered to come up with a better idea for the customer, i think that is cheap. He’s operating like a back street merchant and has gone down some what in my estimations.
i’m off to see him this week to find out why he did it.

I agree with you Rob, i was chatting to a guy on the vehicle wrap (think it carwraps uk) stand at Sign UK last year. He told me of an experienced wrapper who didn’t used to use one before a little test they did with him. They were discussing wrapping at a meeting and got on to the subject of post heating to a certain temperature and methods used. The wrapper said that he knew what temperature the vinyl needed to be at by touch, they questioned this statement and put the wrap guy to the test. He had to post heat some vinyl on a vehicle without a temp gun, he came up well short of the required temperature and was shocked. Apparently he goes to bed with his temp gun now!! 😀

We used the Mactac Bubble Free for the print.

Thats just it, it looks good.
The printers that i use for the business cards are top drawer, i have no issues with them at all.
Could the problem be a PC to MAC issue? They are MAC based and check the files first, would this alter the file in anyway at all.

Let me stress it is only the text, on really close inspection (i mean up close) it looks slightly pixelated when produced in X3, when done in photoshop there is no problem. This tells me that Corel doesn’t produce the same goods as Adobe.

April 15, 2008 at 8:00 am in reply to: Corel X3 Quality?!?

I export the files as 300dpi jpegs generally, colour is CMYK.
Since getting X3 i’ve saved as .pdf files with max quality settings and tried it this way. I always get a lesser quality job than i do when i start from scratch in photoshop.
I’ve also tried converting the text to curves before exporting, this didn’t work. (I thought that corel must do something to a font that inhibits from exporting correctly).
    Still none the wiser.

Going back to Johns point, i think that it is important to get the business to the stage that it can run itself without the creator / owner of the business being there 24/7. What happens when you want a family holiday? What happens when you are sick? The business should not stop.
I am not going to build a sign business over the next twenty years or so and then not be able to sell it because i won’t be running it no more. At least thats the plan!!

When i had a versacamm sp300 the best print that i ever got was a product from victory design, it was a multifix 6500 i think. I’ve never achieved a print as good on any other material, grafityp 5-7 year was pretty good.

The only reason that i stopped using it was down to price, when i first got into digital print i believed that i had to get the best quality print out there on the market so that the locals could see what a great job i do. I paid twice the price of the budget vinyls all to get a quality finish.
The problem was that the customers didn’t care, they just wanted a good job done for next to nothing.
Its still the same now, i could pay twice as much as i do but i know that the vast majority of my customers do not care. Shame.

I would recommend a digital thermometer, not so much for pre heating the vinyl but i think its very important to post heat the vinyls to the necessary temperature. This erases the memory from the product.

Take your time and never rush these things, be methodical.

    Good luck.

    Go for it Phil………

Get some samples and have a go on your own van, practice going into a recess and then around a curve. You’ll soon pick up how the material reacts, i would recommend getting a surface temperature gun so that you can post heat to the recommended temperature.

It is digitally printed graphics with a standard 3-5 year laminate, if i had known of a graffiti problem i would have used the appropriate laminate.

I have checked out the mactac website and they suggest methanol for use on the graffiti laminate film, i’m going to test some on the standard laminate and see how it goes.

Anyone else know of any products?

We did a part wrap on one of the new sprinters two months ago, i saw it yesterday and it is fine.
mind you i thought that the recess around the main flat panel was deeper than most, definatelt deeper than my vivaro.
We used grafiwrap and it was the 1st time i have noticed this film to lose a little colour when stretching into said recess.

I agree about laminating if the customer intends to use it repeatedly.

Rob…. what i’m thinking of doing is lining the walls, then applying dry to the lining paper (laminated of course).
I’m doing the mural to cover her pen marks on the wall!!!!

Still unsure about doing it thisway , i’m tempted to have a go at printing on the wallpaper media and getting a mate of mine who is extremely talented at decorating to hang it, who knows it might open up a whole new market for me with the posh kids around here!!

I see your point Peter, i was just a bit worried that the vinyl might rip the plaster off the walls when removed.

If it’s signs you want to do more than printing, get yourself a digi wide format printer that is print & cut. Probably a versacamm or a cadet to start with, this will actas a printer and vinyl cuter for you.
you can still do business cards and printing stuff, just get them from trade suppliers on the net.

I like the idea of the cable Chris.

Had a bit more practice with it this morning and i’m very confident now. Great bit of kit, blo*dy expensive though.

Is a red acrylic sheet stuck to the back or translucent vinyl? Guessing its the acrylic just wanted to be sure.

jxuereb – I had the acrylic cut from 18mm acrylic (i think, could have been 15mm), not individual letters though. There is one piece of clear acrylic behind the word Deetres that was routed so that the text Deetres stuck out from it leaving 3mm of acrylic untouched so that we could fix this to the rear of the panel. This way no glue or tape can be seen from the outside of the box.
    Hope this is making sense.
We then floodcoated the rear of this piece in red.
The smaller text below is opal acrylic floodcoated in the same red.

this is only a small portion of our trade but its a beginning… if done “realistically” there could be more money in it for us as qualified sign makers as opposed to the blackpool pleasure beach type signage we see on our high streets every day.

Rob…………we get asked to make blackpool pleasure type signage every day of the week. We get good money for it too!! Mind you, we are based at the seaside

  • I took delivery of a soljet III a few months back, i think it’s a great machine. Previously to this i had a versacamm (small one) and felt that the time had come to upgrade, the eco max inks are pretty good but things DO need laminating for ink protection.
We run our machine for a couple of hours each day plus cutting, a very versatile bit of kit. Excellent print quality. The daily / weekly servicing of the machine is pretty much 0 hours, i think the full solvents need a bit more maintenance.
We have a seal 54 base laminator which is a great piece of kit also, worth considering.
