  • Sign UK – what did you think of it?

Posted by Peter Dee on April 23, 2008 at 7:55 am

Well I found it absolutely top notch, the best for years.
Samples, a good mix of large & small exhibitors, lots of wrapping demos and a wide choice of refreshments.
If you haven’t been for 4 or 5 years you’re bound to be impressed.

Yep I thought It was pretty good I must say, It was a bit smaller than I expected, just purley because of the hype but seemed to have more than what I wanted to find out about which was good, almost too much choice, if not confused by all the brand names and competition.

What I did find wierd was that the manufacturing companies where in the same exhibition as the distributors!! I though thats what the distributors were meant to do, thats what they get their commission for.

Got some good advice, contacts and loads of information, I would defo go again.

Pretty impressed by the huge printers and plotters in that place, must of taken a while to get all that machinery in there :lol1:

Yeah, Sign UK was good this year. although i’d agree that it was a bit smaller than I expected.
Did any exhibitors stands stand out to anyone design and graphics wise?

We produced the graphics for the Perfect Colors booth down there. Now I maybe a bit biased like, but i thought it was one of the best looking stands down there 😀

    Lee,
I thought perfect colours stand looked great!
I did the graphics on the RHG Sign and display stand again this year…now im being biased but i thought these looked better. lol

RHG stand looked good paul, nice job.

Perfect Colors backed on to HP, and they were full of praise for the repro job on the stand.

I liked the skip feature on the Robert Horne stand, nice touch 😛

I don’t know about you mate but it always makes me a bit jumpy making graphics for this show!
We do a lot of exhibition graphics work but knowing your work is under the critical eye of hundreds of sign makers means extra care and attention to detail.

Just got back from the show, it was only OK imo.

Nothing new that bowled me over.

Good to meet up with people again.

It was good to meet you Martin. You’re taller than I expected!!! 😉

Sorry I couldn’t talk much mate. I’ve now gone stone deaf and can’t hear a thing. Got sick of saying pardon and Yer what? all the time.

My honest opinion was I thought it was dead. Not a patch on last year and I think there will be a few disappointed exhibitors this year. One sales rep told me that you can only wrap a car if you use a liquid laminator. Put me right off as I don’t like being lied to or bullshited.

Overall….very poor. The atmosphere amongst the signboards gang was great and Rob was a class guy with a star sense of humour.

I went yesterday (Tuesday) and found it quiet and pretty poor to be honest. Last year seemed far busier with more exhibitors on show, nothing new this year.

I think due to some of the big players not showing was the reason why everything looked a little sparse. The Hybrid stand looked the muts nuts though. It’s the first time I’ve seen the Huge JV5 on show and I was impressed and surprised by the size of the thing. I WANT ONE!!!!! :baby: :baby: :baby: :baby: :nagnag: :nagnag: :nagnag:

    Hi,
Have to admit that I was not overly impressed.. I gave it a miss last year because it was so poor the year before, I was impressed with the Free Car parking and Bacon Butty supplied by Roland 😀
They must have spent a small fortune..
I think they should make it bi annual.. just my opinion
    Cheers

Well, I thought the show itself was OK, a few good things were of interest to us. It was definitely quieter than last year or the year before that but as for the usual entertainment ………….. well let’s just say that at 4am it was ‘the same old faces’ that were still there making the most of it. :lol1: :lol1: :lol1: :lol1: :lol1:

I have to say that I enjoy the Sign Uk experience………..

The stands can only display what they have……….in 12 months there have been few quantum leaps in singmaking…………so the Mimaki JV3 is now a JV33…….the Soljet looks sleeker and has updated firmware……..not really something to get overly excited about.

……….However interesting as it is to see the latest kit ,( even is it is only last years updated! ) we go to meet friends old and new, make contacts with suppliers that normally you email or speak to on the phone, talk to people who know the real story behind products and what it is like to deal with the suppliers when things go wrong……….only so much gets posted on the internet 😀 the real stories come out after a few beers.

Even if next year the show was identical to this years we would still make the trip……..you can easily work out how much it cost you to take two days off work, a couple of flights, a stay in the Hilton, lots of beer etc…………but what you cannot quantify is the value of the contacts and friendships you make face to face so whatever you think of ‘the Show’ I believe that it is actually not that important.

I agree. Every year many people moan about how bad the show was, and it makes me wonder what they expect. You can’t have revolutionary kit being invented every year.

Anyways, it was super duper seeing everyone again, plus a few new faces I hadn’t met before.

Well with it being my first year I thought it was excellent.
The best bit was putting names to faces and I pretty much recognised everyone, (except for myself, as Im much better looking than in my photo) but after I was introduced it all clicked into place.
it was really good, enjoyed every minute of it and will probably go for the 3 days next year.
I have been in 1 hour, had a 40 minute wait on a platform at Plymouth and got home at 10pm thanks to a friend who lives in the next town driving me back home.

All in all a brilliant 2 days, absolutely great to meet you all in fact it should be done more often maybe, (meets that is) not sign shows.

All I need to do now is save about 3 quarters of a million quid to buy all the stuff I wanted

    John

It is a very good point John, I met a couple of suppliers I been dealing with for a time.

I think I always go to these shows expecting some innovative mind blowing new products that don’t exist..hmm.
I think someone like ‘Screwfix’ or supplier of tools would do well at the show, never seem to see anything like that, which would be good.

I find it a bit of a shame the sign industry is so driven by the digital side.
To have some traditional things there would have been nice, ie someone selling ‘OneShot’ paint and sable brushes.
In fact I think this is the first year I have never seen a stand with brushes.

Just a sign of the times I guess all comes down to good old ‘supply and demand’

Still worth the trip to meet people of the boards alone though, and looking forward to staying up next year 😉

    Hi everyone!
The show was OK,smaller than previously, as has been said, but still lots of stuff to take my interest. The best by far was meeting up with everyone, Geoff and I had a fab time, and I could not have put it better than John. The time out & the cost were negligible compared to the rewards of meeting up with friends off the boards, and seeing them in the flesh.
    Cheers everyone, it was great!

    Hi All,
Really enjoyed the show, bit of an eye opener but a bit disappointed there was only 1 stand with something to do with screen printing – its a dying game.

Impressed with all the large format printers, especially with the quality they can churn out. Got all the info I needed on sublimation printing which was one of the reasons I attended and picked up a few contacts for sign materials too.

Atmosphere at the hotel was great and it was fantastic meeting up with all the faces off the boards. Meal was good and nearly free – say no more – Steve and Cheryl. :lol1:

Got back home at about 10.45 – knackered after spending about 4 hrs at Birmingham train station, that will teach me to buy cheap rail tickets :lol1: They wanted an extra £55 to change to an earlier train. I should have just paid it as I probably spent that much on tea’s coffees and lemonades – couldn’t face a pint. 😳

Derek, it wasn’t the big issue I was selling – I got £10 each for the Spiderman and guitars and £8 for the ratatouillei mugs.

Made some new friends and a good time was had by all 😀
