  • Which material to use when making a pop up display

    Good Evening everyone,

Having used the grafityp popup material with dodgy results I’m just wondering what material you use for making pop up exhibition displays.

We’re using a versacamm and will be laminating but just wanted a recommendation really.

    Best wishes
    Andy

    Evening Andy,

We use, believe it or not, a black out banner material from Spandex (i think) – We usually supply without lamination, but it gives a very crisp looking matt finish.

    Hi Ian,

But surely that wouldnt be rigid enough? I’m working on the assumption that it’ll be semi rigid.

On its own, it would be, but the ones on a stand with the backing stand pole thingy, its ideal.

Hydrosol is a pretty good bet for pop ups, they do 2 types. The thinner gram for rollers and the thicker for pop ups.
We get good results with this material.

Assuming its ok for versacamm from some basic google searching but can you recommend a supplier mate?

I have used 300micron litestop from B&P printed on my Grenadier and laminated with 80micron for PopUps these have come out really nice, the B&P material is good quality and reasonably priced.

    Hi,
We do a few pop ups.
I have had the best results with Kentmere’s K.Opaljet 125 (for the curved ends) and K.Opaljet 300 (for the main panels) from robert horne. Ive tried allsorts and this is the business. More expensive than some, but you can be sure of a tried and tested quality product.

Seconded, Opaljet – it works every time and is dead easy to work with.

I have used miles of Opaljet for exhibition work printed on my HP Designjet and it is the best product in my opinion but as stated you will need the Opaljet P to print with solvent and i have never tried this only the B&P stuff which gave a good finish and i have used it next to Opaljet on the same stand and it does print flatter.

    Regards

    Russell.

DoroTape do Hydrosol. We use this with excellent results on a JV3. Tried
OpalJet, but I find it looks dull compared to HydroSol.

i had to drop opaljet as there was to many flaws in the solvent surface they may have improved since, now use image perfect nice colours and perfect print surface.

Apparantly the opaljet stuff is being upgraded in a couple of weeks with a brand new solvent surface. The guy I spoke to sounded quite enthused by it and is going to send a sample once they have them.

In the meantime Europoint (should of made that my starting point really as they are one of my main suppliers 🙄 ) do the two types of hydrosol (roll and pop up) but can anyone tell me what profiles they use for hydrosol or where to download.

    Cheers,
    Andy

Hydrosol don’t have any profiles, they recommend that you print using a matte profile. Try a few different ones and see how you go.

UPDATE – the guy came in today with the sample of the all new opaljet solvent. Aparantly the coating has been reworked to give far better results. Had a play with this one, hydrosol and grafityps pop up.

    Results are as follows;

Grafityp – Media surface is quite "rough" to the feel, print quality not good, colours flat. Once printed and laid flat the media bows up on itself.

Hydrosol – Media surface very smooth to touch, print quality good, dries promptly. Once printed stays perfectly flat

New Opaljet – Media surface very smooth, print quality good, dries promptly (not quite as quick as hydrosol) colours very vibrant, lays perfectly flat

Its going to be officially launched at SignUK but these early field test rolls are proving very good indeed. I’ve been left with the bulk of a 20m roll to do re-do our display in the reception area as a beta test. Will post the full pics when done but its looking good.

Would say theres a big imrovement on the grafityp one we were using but I guess you dont know theres a problem until someone shows you the error of your ways. Found this again when comparing the opaljet 165 micron roll up against the stuff I got from victory (euromedia I think) again the euromedia had a really rough feel in comparison to the opaljet.
