  • Which is the best hot air gun?

Posted by Ian Muir on July 23, 2009 at 5:28 pm

    Hi

Just lost my last hair drier (had 6 that were in each letting room of an inn that we moved out of)… so for a more professional approach can anyone recommend a good hot air gun, heat sensor etc for moving towards wrapping etc…

Unfortunately they don’t last very long at all. i have tried many but what i find best now is to buy from B&Q as they have a great return policy. It dont matter what make you buy they don’t last…..well thats if your using them constantly.

We have tried 3 or 4 different ones…. Best of the bunch is the Dewalt by far. The one we have has a variable temp dial

One tip worth bearing in mind to make your hot air gun last longer is when you have finished using it to always turn the heat setting down to minimum and continue running it for a few minutes to allow the heating elements to cool down. If you just switch off after using it on a high setting the elements burn out more quickly.

Hair driers don’t run as hot so tend to last a bit longer.

I’ve started using a propane torch for wraps. I find its a lot better and quicker to work with using an instant burst of heat.

Just bought one from Jag Sign Supplies http://www.jagsignsupplies.com/aqshop/c … hp?id=1308
Seems to be ok, only £22.50 with 5 heat settings and variable blow it even has digital temp gauge.

I got a dewalt variable temperature heat gun as well, wasn’t expensive which surprised me as I thought anything that said dewalt on it was expensive :lol1:

I don’t like to use a lot of heat when fitting so this is great for me, fit with the temperature turned down a bit and then crank it up and blast to make sure it stays where I put it 😮

Propane torch is best for re-casting but the Dewalt with variable temp for back up and ease of use when not re-casting and just forming the vinyl into grooves (Dewalt heat up quicker than the others and last longer). We have 2 torches and 7 guns, the guns we nearly get a year out of.

Dewalt Variable heat. 2000 Watt. £21.91 Screwfix direct.
The same model is available in orange from B&Q under the Black & Decker name (same company).

I use a Bosch with 3 heat settings, and a much older Bosch with 2 heat settings. I think the older one is about 4 years old?! Use them for tinting cars, and the older one has no cold setting to cool the elements down, and it’s still running strong. Whether it’s hot enough for wrapping, I’ve no idea yet!!
