  • Mirrored Silver Wrap Material

Posted by Pryam Carter on October 3, 2009 at 4:57 pm

We’ve just done a job that involved quite a bit of external mirror silver vinyl, i happened to mention that i had seen a picture on the net somewhere of a van that was wrapped in a similar vinyl.
He’s gone out and bought a Robin Reliant and now wants it wrapped in the same mirror looking vinyl.
Does anyone know where i can get some to do such a job?!?!?!

The only one up to the job is the 3M one and can be bought through Wm Smiths

I have a small sample of it. it appears to be a soft clear cast vinyl with a sort of chrome paste on the rear. (if thats how to describe it) so its definitely not the foil polyester type material you will be familure with from all other suppliers of chrome.
I have seen about 4-5 different high profile cars wrapped in this now, but i am still not convinced they are seamless. i know that the one from the uk sign industry awards was not seamless. regardless, i would not attempt a chrome wrap unless this type of chrome was used. anything you may have seen in previous years was all done in patches/bits and i would bet looked terrible up close. even worse after a few weeks on the road.

i also think there are some legalities in the UK over chrome cars… Can you imagine hitting one with your full beam at night? :lol1:

Not sure if the di noc from 3m would do the job,
But they have a chrome version although with a slight texture,
Would probably cost more than than the Robin though!

I have to agree with you there Cheryl…..to start off with these cars were wrapped as exhibition pieces and I’d hate to follow one on the motorway. Really would not want to be the first test case, to my knowledge most get shipped out to Dubai etc 🙄

    well you did ask.
I did this years ago with meta-mark chrome with the polymeric backing.

    The legality issue is interesting.

There are folks out there (not me) who completely cover their motorcycles in chrome. The real stuff that is, not vinyl, and they don’t seem to have a problem.

There are 1 or 2 of these type of vehicles about, regarding the legalities it still seems to be a grey area, we are led to believe chrome/mirror tints are not acceptable, even on the rear windows of vans due to the reflective nature of the product, basicaly if you are behind one and the glare from the sun hits of it and relects into your eyes its deemed dangerous according to traffic police.

i too would be interested in the legalities of it, think of the old 50’s yank cars all covered in huge amounts of chrome, i’ve followed plenty of those and never been dazzled, i would imagine the more curvy a car is, the less likely it is to reflect your lights back at you, it would be no more so than you already see in a metallic finished paint i expect.

what about glass? it’s murder when you follow something which seems to have a solar panel on the back which is aiming at you on a sunny day….yet… the powers that be don’t specify matt finishes on glass.

maybe i’m getting old but, the modern blue strobe lights on emergency vehicles, particularly the rear facing red and white ones, really hurt my eyes at night, maybe the need an ‘old fart’ setting for night use?

    anyways, back on track…. lol
