I bought an epson 1290 with bulk ink after seeing sublimation at Sign uk a couple of years ago. I can’t stand the process of it all, i still have all the gear and plenty of consumables and would be happy to chuck it all on the skip and take a big loss on it, as long as i don’t have to look at it ever again.
Too much time & waste is invovledfor the amount of return you get.

At sign UK i saw a great system for banners, looks dead easy to install and the banners look fantastic as you can get the tension spot on all the way round.

    Thanks guys……..
I’ve been down and secured the unit the best i can.
If they had been big time they could have wiped me out.

I’m supposed to be doing a van wrap on Tuesday – Wednesday so i said to the customer he could bring his van in on Thursday and leave it in the unit over the bank holiday. It’s a huge van, a new mercedes sprinter. The keys were on my desk next to the computer.
They could have taken my new soljet pro 3, seal laminator, old versacamm and laminator, computers, tools etc and left me with nothing.
When i look at it like that i’m a bit happier!!!

Harry, yes i would love to catch them at it

The make that i’m familiar with is Zig, they do pens also make a cleaner, i’ve used this combo on hexis drywipe and chalkboard vinyl with no problems.

I’ve got a customer who made a special recipe for cleaning his boards, all i could get out of him was that it had Coca Cola in it!! I tell you what though, it was better than the zig stuff.
Imagine what Coca Cola must do to your insides.

Thats cool work, did your machine / plotter cut the etch out as well or did you hand cut this away?
The reason i ask is because i had a sample of printable etch material yet it didn’t like to be cut by a plotter.

I agree about the outline on the red. It does have a black outline to it which shows up better during the day but i think it needed to stand out more, maybe with a white outline around the black or something like that.

    Not a bad idea George……….

I had the Versacamm before this and the training on that was crap, i spent a lot of time on the phone to support during the 1st year.
The dealer now does his own installation and training and i have a good relationship with him, he reckons i should have no trouble at all. Plus he’s always on the other end of a phone if i need him.

We stand every year at a local catering trade show, always pick up new customers from that. It is an expensive initial cost sorting your stand out with pop ups etc.. but once paid for it will last a few years.
Go to the plumbers/builders merchants, while they are inside having a coffee (they are always drinking at the trade counter round here) drop a leaflet on their window screen, if you see a plain van in town drop one on that.
Word of mouth is the most powerful tool in my opinion, i recommendation from a friend to another friend goes a long way.

Since i priced this job (which was accepted with the client) i have shopped around for a better price and saved myself Β£120.00.
That money will be going in my pocket and not knocked off the bill as Rob stated earlier.
I have had several prices for these built up acrylic letters that i’m pricing for and the prices vary a hell of a lot. This varied by Β£400 in total, so shop around everyone!!

    We’ve all had that one.

This year i was fitting a load of signs in a hairdressers, i got chatting with all the girls in there and they happened to say "I bet you get people saying you’ve spelt that wrong all the time"
I explained that they were correct and that i was sick of hearing it, it’s not original at all and that all people who come out with that one are total tw*ts or wanke*s as far as i was concerned.
Literally ten seconds later the owner walks through the door with his mate and shouts out "You’ve spelt that wrong mate".
We all piddled our pants πŸ˜€

Lynn………once it’s a nice wooden frame thats all finished it looks pretty good, standing back from 6 or 10ft you wouldn’t know. Plus the advantages with the vinyl for the customer are better than a blkbrd painted ply. They have to re-apply the paint year after year to maintain the look. If you buy the correct cleaner for your pens and use it on the vinyl it will look good for years and it’s maintenance free.
At the end of the day it’s personal choice, i used to think the same as you and painted the boards to get that look. Vinyl is less hassle for me, it goes out the door quicker and looks pretty much the same.

The only way to get them looking authentic is the wooden approach in my opinion. I buy frames from a local joiner, apply the blackboard vinyl to some blk foam and insert within the frame. They look good once varnished or stained.

I could do with some of that Β£250 down here!!!!!!!!!!! Wowsers!!!

I can get 5mm foam for Β£14 – Β£15 a sheet, it’s the cheaper stuff thats now on the market. I was offered a 20 sheet deal at Xmas time for Β£10.50 a sheet. I’ve been told that the properties of these boards are no where near the same as Correx (top brands) and they will eventually let the elements soak into them. This affects the life span of the product when used outside and may crack in places. You don’t want the customer coming back to you un-happy. However for short term graphics and internal stuff they are great at that price. πŸ˜€

June 24, 2006 at 8:58 am in reply to: Printed Window Graphics…

If the graphics are to be applied to the inside of the window then you must mirror the image and print onto a clear media. Then when thats done, leave the media to cure (24hours) then laminate with a white vinyl. This will bring the colour out of the print and is then ready to apply. When doing this make sure that the white vinyl is not grey backed like some digital media or the colours will not come through.

You can go on the outside of the window if you want to, this is printed as normal onto a white vinyl.

As far as application goes it’s all down to the individual, wet or dry? (?)

I always go dry on glass otherwide you could be there for sometime!! πŸ™

If you have a bit of scrap vinyl, why not cut little bits up out of that. You can mark out your board with some little bits and then when everything is in place just peel off.

    no mess! πŸ™‚

Post your number and l’ll call you.

We need a clear film that has no frosting or tint in it.

It was good to see you all on the europoint stand, l could see that you were all going to end up in a bar so i sloped off as l didn’t have much time left at the show.

I’m interestd to know what sort of primer and paint you use.
I use the 18mm foam for vertical aboards and the white edge lets them down a little.
    Would appreciate your knowledge.

It’s going to be digital prints.
I’ve had a bit of a play Rob and feel a lot more confident.
We "powerheated and stretched it round and over and it seemed to go on well.
Looks to me like practise makes perfect!!!!!!!!

    Still need tips though!!

Have a look at the gallery within letterheads site. You should be able to get an idea from there.

    Alright Declan……….

I would go for dibond or something similar. It is excellent for exterior signage, extremely strong and durable. It also has a decent finish to it for your vinyl lettering. Will last for years mate πŸ˜‰

I agree that running it as well as a sign business would be a waste of the machine. I’m thinking of getting the wife involved with the personal goods side of things.
I bought some sublimation gear last year and l haven’t had the time to push it, as a result it has been a waste of money for me. My wife now seems to be interested in doing it at craft fairs etc……… We did one together in December and did pretty well, just thought about the metaza as an add on to it.

dont forget the fast PC and the software to create the designs with

This is as important as buying the right printer in my book. I put up with my old PC (still fairly quick) for over a year, took the plunge and have now got a very quick PC. I can get so much done in the same sort of time now. Photoshop is now faster, it rips the files in half the time. Doesn’t crash etc etc………

My advice is to add on the price of a new fast PC. πŸ˜‰

what font did you use for the ‘Skegness Pet Centre’

It’s a Letterhead Font, i think it was called FAT TONY. I aquired it from another job from a graphic designer, lucky really!!

but (here comes the but) on the hand of the chicken, at the point where the rail ends on wich the door slides, it seem to me that you have cut it where you should have worked it in, (i can see the white of the van)
if it’s just the picture it’s nothing but if it is what i see you might have considered to first work it in and then cut it deep in the recess.

This should have been worked in to the recess, we made a slight mistake when fitting it. It was icey cold and the vinyl tore when we applied it, thus we decided to cut it above the recess.

also on the bottom of the van (on the green and slightly above) are those raindrups or does the van have a serious carroserie problem?

Yes, it’s water. I swilled it down to photograph it. I forgot to get a smudge when we finished it so l asked him to bring it back in. He did but it was filthy!!
I never even thought about continuing the green under the trim at the bottom, i suppose it would look a bit better to the critical eye πŸ˜€
