Look for someone that makes vehicle price sale hangers, they should be able to do the whole lot.

    How much does he owe?

We went to see a solicitor about similar stuff. Once he laid out his costs it was obvious to let it go, even though it hurt our pride.

The trick is to get paid or a big deposit first or on delivery. Things like this reform company policy of deposit or full payment before commencing work.

A 30 min meeting with a solicitor might shed some light on it better

Avery and other brands do a4 sheets with precaution shapes….circle, rectangle etc which will go in your Epsom. This really depends upon the shape of the sticker.

One deciding factor might be how far away is a service engineer for the machine you are looking at. While everyone will travel, it does bump up the cost up and also when they can come.

    Hi
I might not have worded the title correctly.

We are looking at other revenue streams. ie mobile advertising van via LED screens.

I have seen quite a few on the road, but always they are parked up. Is there a rule that says you cannot display moving adverts (like a tv) while the said vehicle is moving on the road.

Must be static. Otherwise, other road users may be distracted and kill someone lol

I thought that tbh, but what about fixed moving led signage, there’s quite a few popping up now, we’ve just had a 20x10ft installed in place of a old advertising board up by our shop.. I take it these must be ok, but can cause just the same distractions

We had a problem regular customer who always emailed Monday requesting something for Friday. We would then have to wait for their artwork. Tuesday nothing, Wednesday morning nothing, Wednesday afternoon we have to email and ring him. Receive the artwork Thursday 3pm and he turns up Friday morning 9am…and we are the worst company ever….

We now have a step by step procedure for the customer. Including paying the deposit. After each step, it says “failure to do step 1 by return email may result in your job being delayed. We cannot move forward without the information requested in this step”

It works most of the time, except for the chap above, he’s moved on to a better sign maker lol. The best of all, he is a builder and was always harping on about late deliveries from the builders yard holding up his workers…

Have you got a price for delivery, we found the cost was quite high, so never bothered sending signs this way.

We get our sheets from Europoint, they deliver the sheets flat and still there are damages. Corners knock, even with protective plastic on them. I suspect knowing how the delivery companies treat smaller parcels there’s very little chance of the sign getting there undamaged.

They are not perfect, to be used as a guide only.

Flood the recess with an over sized piece of vinyl and then trim off excess.

  • I’m not sure if it was on this site, but I remember seeing a thread on

“how long does that £100 vehicle lettering job really take”

It broke the job down, through designing and emailing the client before approval, then production and then fitting.

Basically saying we only see the fitting of the graphics and the cost of the materials when there is a lot more besides these things.

Plastic wallet type, delivery note slipped inside it, showing the address on the front and contents on the other side. No prices.

The post office online system which is connected to eBay, Amazon and Etsy prints prints the delivery note and product detains once the item has been moved to a delivery state.

  • Sorry I don’t use this software.

But when we screen print onto clear we have to make 2 files. 1 a print containing image and reg marks and 1 a cut file containing only the reg marks and cut line

We break the amount up into smaller number, say 100 stickers, so we would do 5 runs to make 500

May 8, 2019 at 5:30 pm in reply to: Damaged goods, should the buyer be held responsible?

The problem with items and couriers….

A product gets damaged or lost, who pays. The courier, but by using them you agree with their terms etc.

We send quite a few bits out using Royal Mail, yes some get lost or damaged. We tried to claim once or twice, but they make it super difficult that you have to ask is it worth it.
Our first claim was a box of graphics to an over seas customer. The total was £500+ to him.
But I can only claim what it cost me in materials. I cannot claim for our time or profit.
Out of that £500 the materials were not even £75 in vinyl. To claim for the materials we had to supply invoices for the vinyl and a detailed list of how much per graphic was used…..

Over a certain money amount we ask the customer to get a courier to pick up and deliver, saying out courier is far to expensive to use for bigger boxes. This way it’s their headache.

Smaller claims of lost or damaged items we just resend out, don’t even bother ringing the Royal Mail now.

And don’t get me started on myhermes ….

I believe some of the signage needs to be Photoluminescent (glow-in-the-dark). Some last 6 hrs before needing light to charge them, some last 12+ hrs.

I’d buy them all in and add a percentage, at least you know all the lettering is to the correct height etc should there be any issues latter down the line

We had building control tell us what we needed in our building. (When we were rebuilding it)

I bet the fire brigade might advice, last thing you want is to be held responsible.

We’ve had 2, both good brands. Dtg and resolute. If I’m honest spending £10k on machines and other bits, you’ll need to do about 25 shirts every week for a year to get your money back, based on £9 profit per shirt..

I would say they are great if you have a clothing line, with great designs, where the customer picks a design then picks a garnet to put it on. You simply get that garment out of stock ( opps that’s another thing to think about) and then print it.

You’ve got to have a range of stock clothing, as you can’t justify ordering small numbers from stockists imo.

Printing a shirt for little Jenny’s birthday etc, ant going to cut it, unless you aren’t bothered too much about numbers.

Head strikes will cost you £600-£800 if you call the engineer out. Again something to think about.

Print ware and promotion is the place to go, Resolute have some new printers just come out, which seem popular. They have a fb page

  • As above, Money will be left on the shelf, you’ll earn less profit. Just print on what ever material you’ve got it and charge.

Or order in via a sub contractor

When the customer gives you the text required for the window graphics.
You email back a proof, they reply with…. it’s spelt like this…. you google the definition and it means something totally different so you send them a screen shot of google and they email back saying they are correct, they should know as they’ve been in the industry for 4 years.

Ok… you do as requested and before the lad returns back to base, they ring you to say it’s not spelt like that…. and can you do it again.

Not a problem, that will be another £100…

Obviously don’t do it wet and when peeling back the hinge (ask someone to hold the exposed bit) clean the glass again with iso to remove moisture and apply right away. removing the app paper can be tricky and care needs to be taken there!

  • Having just done work on our old shop and paid for the bits, plaster board is the cheapest board at about £5 a board. But will graphics stick to that I doubt it, without it being plastered which bumps the cost up.

We once made a partition and put mdf 5mm boards on, then printed wallpaper and covered the mdf, served a couple of purposes, showed we could print wall paper with logos, and we advertised some services via a printed message. We than fixed various signs to the board to show customers, which was easier being mdf.
    If that makes sense

If you want to look trendy, we visited a barbers to quote and she did fix osb to both the floor, walls and ceiling, I think the shop was in a bad condition and that was the quickest and cheapest solution to make it look clean and straight, it looked quite smart to be honest, on the ceiling she pva glued marvel magazines pages….not saying do that foe a signshop, Lol

Most of the time we wrap the print around the edge and onto the rear.

There are clips you can get to click the sections together so they don’t part for when you put them in a frame.

You can stitch a small sliver behind one piece so it over laps the other from behind.

If it’s just to be screwed to the wall, it’s just a buttjoint, use the factory cut edges, your cuts to be on the right and left side

We just use a roll of that coloured vinyl that we never use, let’s face it we all have a roll lol.

Cut as a negative, flat cut lettering just drops inside. We roughly trim away the visible backing paper to reveal the sign or wall underneath and stick.

I’ve seen others apply vinyl to the sign, then apply the flat cut lettering on top of the applied vinyl.

Create a weed boarder around the graphic and weed the design so it leaves 25mm of vinyl around it, that way the app paper sticks better around the edges

Sign elite is just a broker too, going through royal insurance. We Are with a local company, about £1500 pa. insurance should be customised to suit your needs.

Edit. If you claim and an inspector comes out, if you are under covered they can penilise you. So don’t try to reduce your premium by not including things.

I’m sure a builder who doing an extension would wait just as long… not.

IMO the customer doesn’t see artwork time as an invoicable thing. We often get strande looks when we quote for leaflets in 2 parts, the leaflets and the artwork.

I’d simply invoice them for the work carried out.

  • Could it be the material that’s at fault, not the tape.

Learnt my lesson today. Got asked to produce one of those children’s menus you see in pubs. Colouring and puzzles on one side menu on the other. She pooped in today, yes that looks great. How much is it going to be, Shet eyes popped out of her face, thought it would only be £30….

Broke my golden rule of taking a deposit always. Lost nearly a day on it

As we all know banner edges pucker when rolled, the Velcro will too. We have a sewing section for another product so we just sew them. Done many for market traders etc.

I would recommend talking to a local upholsters and get them to do it. It’s another cost to you, but pass it on to the customer, now, rather than having to redo later down the line

Having said that industrial sewing machines can be picked up very cheap

    It isn’t just sign/trade related.

Energy contracts, boardband, phone lines, charities, local people in need being used to extract donations.

All have point blank lied in order to get ur money.

Fake invoices, fake postal delivery cards.

We’ve had property photos and adverts duplicated in order to get the gullible to send money direct to secure a viewing.

Scammers selling stuf on Facebook, then you hear how the washing machine neverworked and we should never trust that person again.

Dodgy fags, trainers, handbags, even things like having your nails done, the staff using superglue instead of the proper glue that doesn’t damage your nails. Because it’s cheaper.

We very rarely buy second hand as it so hard to trust anyone these days.

Customers who have ideas of grandeur way beyond their financial means are the Bain of my life.

New hair and beauty salon opens up, they want a quote on 3D stainless steel lettering with nice pink lights behind, over the phone I advise her it’s going to be a minimum of £1500. That’s ok, please come out to quote. We attend and I quote, it’s actually £2100 plus vat

Week later we drive past ( it’s on our way to work) there’s a £50 banner up.

Customer requests a site visit, normally not a problem, but they are 45miniutes away, I ask them to tell me more about the job on the phone, turns out it’s a 1ft sign directing traffic to their car park. They placed the order but the lady seem put out we weren’t going to come out and look at the fence they’ll be putting it on…

My first thought would be having the same set up as you already have now. Then hopefully if you print a job on one machine, it’ll look the same when printed on the other machine. Diffent machines, diffent inks diffent rips I would have thought will give you diffent results.

If you are getting really busy, should you consider biting the bullet and get a printer that can cope with the increase work load… sell your printer and buy a printer that’s 3 times as fast, giving you the equivalent of 3 printers.

Consider a separate cutter or if that’s where the backlog is 2 cutters

If we are doing a banner 3m x 1.2m we add a thin line boarder offset by 25mm all around the banner, we trim to this line the apply the banner tape and the fold over.

We also print where the eyelets are to be pressed, takes two mins in sign lab and cuts out errors in production

We have a rack behind the printer, banner, vinyl, roller banner, t shirt printable, wrap etc. All on a pole, that way your not carrying it far. New material stays in the box until the old is used then it goes in the rack

Gloves are always used when handling material

  • Are you after the cut files?
Surely if you have the car there it’s a 10 min job, cut once or twice making adjustments as you trial fit.

Or just buy them from a supply like south lakes mini centre who are heritage approved so might sell the original type.

eBay they are £8 ish for aftermarket

Ha Ha, I can`t get away from it, I work with my husband

Tuesday late afternoon, we get a security company, an already customer of ours, place a screen printing order for 150 polos, 2 colour print on front, rear and both sleeves. Which equates to a 600 2 colour print job. He then drops the bomb shell that he needs to pick them up mid Friday as he has a festival to attend….

OK, they will be done in time – just. But surely he didn`t just get this gig dropped on him, festivals have to be planned and security is one of the main issues. So why wait until nearly the event day to organise the shirts…

Sorry, but some people, even succsessful business people need help to wipe their ass lol

One thing to concider, when you need to get higher than your tower allows… We rent sections from the local hire centre so we can get higher. They won’t stock the cheaper brands, which means you have to rent the whole thing.

    Corel or signlab for us.
But we only trace simple logo etc, anything harder we just farm out. £6 – £10 a logo is worth trying to do it yourself if it takes you an hour. In an hour we can make more money doing what we do that trying to save a few pounds. If the customer can’t provide the right file they pay for it anyway… Or should do!

    quote Martyn Heath:

Hi, been reading this thread as today i got asked for a double sided banner. The idea im seing is to just print two, banner tape the edge of one, lay the second over and eyelet through both. Guessing this would work just fine? However my standard material is 370g would this be problematic with showing through the other side?

    thanks

Our banner material is 430 GSM I think. Just scale it down and try it
