Advice needed with Roller Banner Film, please?
Posted by Susan Rowe on October 5, 2019 at 10:38 pmTrying to print my first roller banner using back-lit pvc film and a Roland sp540v. The print is coming off really wet and also has kind of spider webby sections (highly technical term there) in the ink. Looks horrible. Tried the default settings for backlit film. Also tried unidirectional with 2 pass print. None are coming out nicely. The banner has a gradient orange background. Any suggestions as to what I am doing wrong?

Hi Susan, download metamarks "md5" and try running this using the "sign & display" option under "quality", "colour management" in versaworks. Md5 profile is all we run for 99% of jobs, works great everytime

Based on what you have said, i would say the issue appears to be the Profile.
If you know the brand and code of the material you have purchased, I would go to the manufacturers website and download the Profile for your machine. If that is not available, I would try on the Roland website and look for the profile for that type of film.

Yup, sounds like a profile issue, but can I just check
quote :back-lit PVC filmfor a roller banner? Normally you’d use a light-stop front lit media (eg Grey backed 300micron lay flat film).

Backlit PVC banner is for lightboxes. You don’t want it being lit from the back. You want frontlit pvc or a dedicated roller banner media with grey back.
Most of the time roller banner film will dry by the time it’s on the take up.
I think you may be using the wrong media.

Get a roll of ‘lay flat’ grey backed roller banner media. (I like the one from Soyang). You won’t regret it.

Agree with others that you may have the wrong material for a pop up banner.
Also suggest that when printing on the backlit film you may be printing on the wrong side causing the problems with the ink not drying

I’m not sure of the brand but it’s pvc, grey shiny on the back, and the site I am printing on is white. But I am definitely going to try some other media as Im sure you’re all correct that it’s not the right type. Thx everyone x

Sounds like the correct material.
Profile, and or temperature settings. The ink won’t absorb into the material, so try turning the heaters up on the machine.
MD5 profile for most of our work too
