Crop marks on large banners
Something I’ve always struggled with is trimming banners.
I give my banners a 5mm bleed and add crop marks directly in illustrator, but anything over 1.6m I struggle trimming as my ruler is not long enough. Yes, I could get a larger ruler but doesn’t help if the banner is 5 m long for instance.
I thought about adding crop marks along the edges every so often but just wondered what you guys do?
Currently, I give the banners a 5mm bleed and stroke the edge, I then just trim on that line but I have recently just started using the no hemming tape which I quite like actually but the trim marks need to be 100% spot on otherwise it makes the banner look untidy.

Do you not hem the banners?
We print without bleed and crops (add a stroke if it’s white bg) then when we print, print margin marks off set 28mm from the image.
Trim to the margin marks, tape and fold the hem.
Large banners we fold in half, or quarters and trim on the keen cut in one go… doesn’t matter if it runs out a little on the hem.

If we are doing a banner 3m x 1.2m we add a thin line boarder offset by 25mm all around the banner, we trim to this line the apply the banner tape and the fold over.
We also print where the eyelets are to be pressed, takes two mins in sign lab and cuts out errors in production

"half or quarter and trim in the keen cut"! Why did I not think of that. Been cutting oversize large banner with a 3m ruler for years 🙁 🙁 🙁

It does put a small crease in the material but nothing major :thumbsup:

That will be one of many by the time the customer is finished with it lol Cracks me up when we try to be careful only for it to get thrown in the back of a van!

Draw a box around the print say 50mm larger with no infill just a 1mm stroke etc and cut just inside the line, if i have understood you correctly

That’s what I’m doing at the moment but thought there would be a better way.
In regards to the no hemming the banners, I’ve started using a tape called hem-it which you sticks to the back and I eyelet that. Good results so far and it frees up some material allowing me to either have bigger banners or double up depending on the sizes.
Makes hemming banners much quicker.

We use Caldera Visual RIP+ v11.0. If the file doesn’t have crop marks we don’t have to go to illustrator etc to add these in. We can do this on the RIP. We add a 30mm margin and a crop mark that goes all the way round. We cut to the line, fold over and tape down. If the banner below is white we can add a margin line to the visible graphic and the hem line so we know where to fold to. Makes it so much quicker and easier to do.
