Romoving 15 year+ frosting from windows
Hi all, i’ve taken on a job and wish i could now run away. The two windows apx 1000 x 1000mm get direct sunlight most of the day and the frosting on them is brittle and baked on. Ive told the customer i would charge by the hour to remove (hoping she would do it herself) Unfortunatley after 30 minutes and barely a 10cm square removed shes now asked me to do them. Is there a magic solution that will make this job easier? Im also a little concerned the glass is possibly 80-100 years old or more so rather thin and i dont really want to be heating it up. Doing it next week so i have time to get stuff in if needed, thanks for reading

I have been trialling a paintbrush cleaner that can also soften old crusty vinyl quite quickly. If you can set it up to soak for ten minutes, maybe spray it on and put a plastic sheet over the top to prevent evaporation and runoff, it seems to get everything soft enough to scrape easily.

There was a thread on here a while back with a link to a 3M video where they soak the windows with soapy water and then cover with polythene, leave it over night and it just peels off
Never tried it but worth a go!

Thanks both, I cant find the product from NZ on google but thanks. Chris what product do you use? The video is positive but doubt that the frosting was in the state mine is. Id give it a go though so let me know and ill get some in, many thanks jean

Triumph scraper otherwise with stainless steel blades, can point you in the right direction if need be for these

I’ve just done five windows (1.5×2.5m) and a door. Three of the windows get a couple of hours direct sun, the door and two of the windows, strong sunlight for much of the day.
Followed the 3M cookie method, using fairy and water. draped over with bubble wrap. After 4 hours, was able to get strips about the size of a playing card. More juice added, and left covered over night.
Next morning, four of the windows came off in one piece, with virtually no resistance. One of the windows and the door were a different matter. It didn’t help that the door was open most of the day, and the wind was drying the juice. Gentle persuasion with a razor blade, with very regular re-application of juice brought most of the frosting off, in blade width strips. Corners were a bugger.
Now, if anyone knows how to remove the knackered solar film on the outside… Also probably 15 years old.

We use one of these and some warm slightly soapy water – ive yet to find a better scraper for removing glue
