  • Fire signage suppliers or make your own?

What a way to spend my bank holiday weekend. I have been asked to supply and fit some fire signage for a non compliant building, it is a councils civic centre! They have sent me a list of what they require which has been made by their own compliance/buildings officer.
Is it worth making your own, I only have a CJV 30-60 to print and they want rigid plastic so would have to lay them all up, or just buy them in. I am thinking buying them in so if anyone on here wants to give me price that would be great. There are approx 80 arrow signs.

Also I have had a quick walk around myself to just get an idea of any removals, where I am replacing with new, and sites for the post signs to go outside and whilst doing so I have seen some glaring mistakes in the layout and existing signage like BS and EN Standards in the same areas, no Fire Exit Keep Clear signs on the outside of Final Fire Exit Doors. Arrows pointing in opposite directions in open plan offices. These are not mentioned in my package of works or on the plans I have been shown. My question is do I say anything now or wait until they get told it is still non compliant and get another works package? I don’t want to be seen to be trying to just get more work but not saying something may look like I don’t know what I am doing.

I believe some of the signage needs to be Photoluminescent (glow-in-the-dark). Some last 6 hrs before needing light to charge them, some last 12+ hrs.

I’d buy them all in and add a percentage, at least you know all the lettering is to the correct height etc should there be any issues latter down the line

We had building control tell us what we needed in our building. (When we were rebuilding it)

I bet the fire brigade might advice, last thing you want is to be held responsible.

That have only requested Rigid Plastic. No photo luminescence or illuminated signs. This is where I know they are wrong especially the illuminated ones as all they have are big green glass panels with a light strip inside the fixing to light them, with a single running man, no text, not even BS or EN standard.

If you been supplied with a list of what is required I would just go ahead and do ask they ask. Being a sign maker doesn’t make us experts on H&S so who are we to advise what is and what isn’t compliant? Leave it to the experts. Once you get involved in advising what is and isn’t compliant you become liable and create a rod for your back. That’s just my take on it, others may advise differently

That is what I was thinking, just supply and fit. Then any issues they will get me back to supply and fit again 🙂
