We donate to a local charity that works to save items destined for landfill, they recycle and sell to schools for crafts. They also have our scrap vinyl off fits, bits trimmed off to make banners etc

I would just air on the side of caution. Perhaps offer the service but with reservations as you’ve never done it before and add there is no refund.

We screen printed onto a horse box mud guard, using ink designed for rubber and it still peeled off easy… :yikes:

    I think it’s fixed… Touch wood.

The black and yellow just dropped out after printing 40m of banners. No amount of cleaning or soaking worked.

We remembered it happened before and Andy talked my hubby through it, good job he saved the instructions.

Open the ink valves things, clamp 1 pipe and then pull ink through using a syringe from the other line.

    It worked

Van with removal rear seats. We had a pair of seat put in the rear, they slot in a track on the floor with a twist action hand knob. Takes 1 minute to remove them. If they need to be perminate go for a longer van or have the seats spaced so the 8×4 sheets slide between the seats.

I’d split my money up between a car and a van, just buy 2 cheaper vehicles

  • We have the same, just takes a bit of measuring, I’ve even done one. Though I couldn’t pull the riv it thingy, wasn’t strong enough

I dont think this is the case, Fulham Graphics is owned by a different person altogether, but time will tell I suppose.

We only used them once for 3 routed large circles, them arrived all bashed up from the courier.
Replacements arrived a few days latter, all ok.

working at height should always be kept to a minimum for your own safety.

We’ve all stripped graphics off Perspex that we thought this will only take ten minutes, when in reality it took an hour, using heat and glue remover before we can apply the new graphics. Pulling off ( :smiles: ) stubborn vinyl takes some strength on the bench, I wouldn’t like to do it at height.

Depends on how high the banners are.

Curry/pc world have a system where it’s quite high, then you can lower the whole thing, change the banner and hoist it back into position. Never seen that system sold anywhere tbh.

Co op, just have an alloy angle frame where you just zip tie the banner to it, at head height.

We’ve got a similar thing but made from metal in our car park. Banner lay out on the computer showing where the eyelets are, just delete the old image and drop in the new info.

Customer wanted 3 vans done, all lwb, cut them, he came in, the all were swb. He couldn’t see the problem until we placed a line of text on the side and it hung over by about 8 inch. He wouldn’t pay to get them done again, I’d been paid in full as he wanted a deal on all 3, so I insisted on full payment first. He told us to "do the best you can….." So we put the text on 2 lines, looked crap.

Sines then, on the artwork we put measurements, showing the length and height of the van and we say please check

1 chap, dropped off his van and said he’d pick it up before we closed, rang the mobile at 8pm complaining the gates were locked to the carpark and he couldn’t get his van, insisted we come to work and open up… :bangshead:

March 27, 2018 at 4:32 am in reply to: Ventilation from Ink Smell

We had to have a couple of things in the new shop dictated by building regs.

Garage area, a fan sucking air out controlled by a pir sensor. So when someone’s picked up moving about it does on. Cost about £300

Then we have a heat exchange system, where stale are is swapped for fresh air, but the fresh air is warmed to the same temp as the stake air. Ours were quite costly as it depends on the size of the building, but you can get smaller units designed for homes for a couple of hundred pounds.

When we first had a cadet we bought a fan from machine mart, abit noisey tbh. Put it in the loft, vent in the ceiling above the printer.

We printed (farmed out) some loyalty cards for a Vape show. Artwork approved on the Thursday morning. Ordered them from the supplier. On Monday afternoon he wasapp a message and photo of how he wanted them….. Told him they were already ordered, he said they are not how he wanted them so he’s not paying.

We had just done a flat cut lettering sign which he paid for in full, so took no deposit or payment.

He couldn’t understand why we wouldn’t just forget the payment as he would be ordering some more so wouldn’t be out of pocket… Apparently we are supposed to keep the customer happy at all costs.

We use pulse, it’s quite old but a good level. Tbh we can’t use it to its full advantage, I’ve not got the time to sit there and play.

Embroidery digitising is so cheap to buy in, India and Chinese companies offer it for £5-£10. We’ve started to use David sharpe in the uk, £12.50 I believe.
So we just charge the customer £25 set up and send it off, it safe a lot of time and we just get on with something else.

Take the stress off me tbh too, so I’m all for it. Lol

    We print 2 banners.

The first is the size that is required plus Approx 10 inch extra both ends ( can’t remember the exact measurements) the extra bit forms the sleeve which is stuck down with banner tape.
The second banner is just the size required which is secured with banner tape at one end.
Banner tape down both edges and at the bottom by the bottom sleeve. Trim the edges neat down the sides. A couple of eyes help secure things. Some eyelets don’t like 3 layers though.

As far as I’m aware there isn’t a short term wrap vinyl.

On you tube there is a comparison video between 5 or 6 manufacturers wrapping vinyl, all the same fitters, all on the same car. Avery came in almost a day quicker than the slowest vinyl.

What I’m trying to say is, there’s a price difference between some of the material, but they can be slower to fit, which can bring them out to be the dearest when labour costs are added up.

We just farm everything out to a couple of well know trade printers.

We don’t even try to compete with vista print or eBay. It’s sold as a service to help the customer leave it all in the hands of one supplier.

Charging for design is the key as business cards and the like are such a low cost item.

When we interviewed for a designer, we were quite shocked on how little they knew about sign and print.

They are given projects at college… Design an advertising campaign for a make believe company.

Very few knew about bleeds and safe areas for paper printing. None of them had done any vehicle work or signage. Few knew about what file to ask for or how to recreate a logo from crap artwork.

We were also amazed on how many designers with degrees had never had a designing job since leaving college or uni….

I don’t understand why you wish to rent one long term agaist taking outa loan to buy one outright over say 3-4 years

Renting a machine in other industries is a LOT less expensive. You look after the machine and give it back at the end of contract to be sold or you are offered a discounted buy price. You also get tax relief 18-20%.

It seems most Roland dealers I’ve spoke with offer you a “lease” but really just sign you up for a high-interest loan, and still want the machine back after contract.

    Ok, I understand.
But printers can be very temperamental, requiring a lot of cleaning and maintenance. A simple head strike can cost you £750 in a new head, each visit by the maintenance man cost us at least £200. Who pays those costs…

You do get a tax break on a loan btw too, not sure on %

Returning a lease vehicle is not straight forward, if it’s done over the agreed mileage there is a cost to pay, likewise if there’s any damage on the bodywork.

Perhaps printers haven’t reached the reliability stage yet to offer them on lease after all, vehicle leasing is relentively a new thing, cars were once offered with 12 months warranty, you know get 5 years with some models

We did rent a photocopier many years ago, paid £12k over 4 years, the term finished and we expected them to collect it, we were told to keep it as it had no value now, we sold it for a whopping £30……

Try a dedicated business agent, it’ll cost but you can always put the price up to cover it..

We tried to sell a business a couple of years ago. It turned over £100k and made huge profits. Materials £5, sell for £30. Took 2 minutes to make. Based on figures from other businesses we thought it would be worth £50k. We couldn’t sell it, a few tyre kickers etc. In the end it was sold for £12k, to a friend and we gave him 12 months to pay us.

He paid us back in 3 months.

I’ve search and search for how to value a business for sale, got a few different answers, some only sell for the equipment costs sadly.

Today you can become a signmaker for £400, so some folk can’t see the point of buying a business for lots more…

Try Facebook, advertise in a category that might relate to the business. Eg. Car forum if it’s stickers or number plates.

Had a loverly young lady in today, wanted a cheap little banner for her flower shop. Wanted it late today for a sale they were having tomorrow, she didn’t want to see any artwork, just wanted the shops name and a bunch of flowers……

Rings her up 2 hrs later saying it’s done, proudly unrolls it and straight away I spot Fower Ship, instead of Flower Shop…. I nearly cried.

But she was loverly and told me not to worry, she could have easily torn a strip off me, but she didn’t.

So There are some nice people out there.

    With reference to deadlines…

How oftern do you give a random quote and then get asked when can you fit? And you haven’t even done any artwork yet…

I read recently that when a customer requires a deadline, but then asks for amended artwork or adds to the list… If we don’t respond with a deadline for them to give us the information or approve artwork by, then perhaps we are to blame.

I tried it this week after a customer wanted a sign fitting early next week. He sent over the info and his logo. I laid it out on the sized panel and emailed it over. He questioned colours and a few other petty things, which throw up a flag to me.

So I linked in a colour swatch of the vinyl told him these were the colours available and said I needed all the info outlined within 2 hrs if I was expected to meet his deadline.

He rung up and said he wanted to meet his Parnter in 2 days time to discus colours, I said I can’t make your deadline then. 1 hr later I had all the info I needed, the artwork was returned to him for final approval and I got an email within 2 minutes, saying all approved.

I’ll certainly be using this in the future.

Ralawise, btc to name a few.

They are pretty much on pair with each other. If it’s a fruit of the loom value weight t shirt, it’ll be the same price bar a few pence. After some time you might get carton rate on some orders, you might get further diiscount after that, we get a certain %age off carton rate, it all depends upon how much you spend.

People always think we get t Shirts for 50p each. Pmsl

The small hand machine is pretty versatile. We have a 24ft X 5ft table, we just layout the banner and move the machine along.
The foot operated version would have to work the other way, dragging the banner through it in between the operator and machine, I can see the banner having loads of marks on it after it was finished.

We do it all the time when the customers too tight to buy new. 99% peel off ok.

As long as you warn them about ghosting, becoming brittle etc, it’s their choice .

It’s very frustrating sometimes when the customer only looks at the £ note. Not the overall look of the brand

Reading a post on screen printing on Facebook about deadlines.

The writer said that oftern deadlines for delivery are missed because the printer does not give deadlines for artwork to be sent over or artwork approval.

So the first deadline to ge issued if a required by date is wanted, is I need your artwork by "X" in order to meet your deadline.

Once artwork is sent over and laid out on the proof, it should be sent back requesting approval by "X" date, in order to meet your deadline.

As David says, if you don’t give a deadline for approval, how does the customer know?

    It’s all a learning curve

Debt can sometimes be down to a few things.

1.Bad management or planning on their part.
2.All out nastiness by the customer.
    3.Miss communication
    4.Not taking a deposit
    5.Not happy with the job.
6.Talking the talk but can’t back it up with the cash.
    7. Short deadlines.

    1. Customer creating a new business, usually works from the inside out, and the last thing they think of is the outside appearance. He’ll pay but might take alittle time, unless the business fails. Taking a deposit softens the blow.

    2. This customer is a nasty piece of work, very up themselves, knows your business better than you, thinks he can offer you 50% of what your quote is and you should think yourself lucky…… Avoid at all cost unless you get all the money upfront. We tend to overprice these people and hope they go elsewhere.

    3. You’ve not explained what the sign will look like properly or the customer hasn’t explained himself correctly. Artwork must be shown, colours clearly stated and shown, pictures of similer jobs shown, materials used shown etc etc. Take no chances with this one, cover your butt. End result customer not happy as its not what he wanted, a deposit softens the blow. Oftern to put this right it means starting again, where you lose money or break even.

    4. Deposit all the time or payment in full. Large signs where there’s 3D letters, LEDs involved etc, most of us just farm it out, but we have to pay for that upfront. A deposit must cover material costs. All our debt has been from jobs where we didn’t take a deposit or we dropped off the signage and they said they would call to pay the rest of the bill. When the sign is finished ask for full payment over the phone before delivery or pick up. Ask if the person picking up the sign has the funds to pay, all to oftern a dogs body will get sent to pick it up who hasn’t a bean to his name. Don’t be afraid to ask for payment.

    5. Not happy with the job, could be our fault tbh, let’s face it, how many times have we seen really bad signage. I would not pay for something that was terrible workmanship, so why should you get paid. Do your best, be critical of your work, replace that wonky line on the van before the customer comes to collect it. Keep mistakes inside the shop don’t let them outside. Price jobs correctly and use good materials.
On a side note, I quoted for a diabond signs to be fixed to railings, I didn’t realise the costs of the Chanel and the post clips, I lost £200 off the profit. Research prices.

    6. We’ve all net these folk, they ask for an all singing and dancing 3D lite sign, you quote £3000, 4 days later you drive past and you see a banner outside… We were asked to price leaflets for a new shop, he bigger it up how he always had runs of 50k and 100k at a time. So far his biggest order has been 1k. This guys running his business on a budget, if you don’t take payment in full when they Order you’ll be helping his cash flow.

    7. Short deadline jobs, means mistakes happen, either the customer or you. Artwork signed off helps, payment in full with this one. Never let them pin you down to a day or that’s their excuse not to pay if you miss it.

    Not by all means 100%.

£45 pm would only be for a couple of metres, prices reduce based on how many metres you require.

The cjv isn’t the fastest printer in the world so we can’t and won’t try to compete with eBay sellers or trade sellers selling at £9 a metre.

Large volumes clog up the machines for vehicle graphics etc. As saiid before it depends upon your target market

As a quick guide, we price £45 per running metre, add £10 for laminate, add £10 for complex cut shapes, as the cutting can take ages sometimes.

Price is reduced the more they have, we don’t reduce to a really cheap price as the printers not the fastest when set on quality print.

Outsourcing printing is a pain, you tend not to design in full colour or simply not chase those jobs because you know it’s a pain to outsource.

Buy a printer and your world changes. Printed banners, full colour images on vehicles. Jobs will come as most folk will think you already do it as a matter of course. In today’s signmakers world 99.9% will have a printer.

Get the best you can afford, mimaki or Roland to name 2. Get a loan if you can’t afford one, 2 small jobs a week will pay for the loan. You won’t look back and after 6 months you’ll wonder how you managed without one.

Customer requests a Union Jack on her Mini Cooper. Only problem they can only bring the car in on Saturday. We ask the fitter if he wants a bit of over time, he says yes.
We relay to the customer that he they must be there at 9am as he has a wedding to go to later.
Fitter waits for 55 minutes for the customer to arrive, they have both the shop number and my mobile, no phone calls to say we are running late. He rings me and I say go home. 15 mins later they turn up and ring shouting where are you.

Fitters gone home because you were nearly 1hr late.

They start shouting about bad service…… Great start to the day.

    Yesterdays customer.
He had rang previous and enquired about embroidery. He normally brings 1 garment in to have his sunbed logo put on, it’s not complicated and only takes 10 mins to do and we charge him £6.
He says he has 10 items and wants a reduced price as he can save £15 by having it done where he gets the tunics from.

Reduce the price abit, and he brings in 5 items saying he’ll bring in the other 5 when he gets them.

Then asks will they be done the next day, and reels back in amazement when I say I very much doubt it for that price. And then try’s to pin me down on a time.

So I’ve accidentally forgotten where I’ve put them, I’ll proberly find them middle of next week….. All to save a few pound.

On the other hand a customer rang at 5pm just as we were closing asking if we had an aboard in stock, as his wife was doing a wedding fair and was desperate for one for the next day. We looked and we did have one. I explained were were 1 minute from closing, he said he would give us £50 over the price, we were happy to help as he was really appreciative. He collected 10 mins later as it was only simple text on it, he was so great full he brought in a box of chocolates for us, he committed on a banner we have in the showroom, it was a SALE banner what we print on the empty space left when printing 2ft wide banners on a 1370 roll. We just gave him one, it saved him £25 and he was over the moon.

What customers don’t realise, treat us well and we will treat you well, pull out the stops etc. He went away and we thought what a nice chap and hopefully he thought good about us.

Yes it amazes me how the customers still complain about vat and ask to remove vat and hand you a credit card for the Pdq machine.

Or the customer who said they’ll pay cash and doesn’t want an invoice, but when he pays wants a receipt to put in his books….

Or the customer who moans about the huge £50 bill, but then pulls out £1000 bungle.

Or the custome who approves artwork, then says they don’t like it when the jobs finished.

Or the customer who wants a silver boarder, forgets to say The graphic is going on a silver car

Or the customer who just wants some text 4 inch high but can’t grasp it when you say it’s 10ft long, as he only has a space of 12 inch.

Or the customer who rings Monday and asks if he can have a job completed by Friday, but then doesn’t give you the info until mid Thursday.

    all the above last week

rush jobs we charge a hefty premium, to make it worth while. We do not take on those jobs that have a unreasonable deadline. Because you just know the supplier will cock up or they will send thevwrong thing. It’s just not worth the aggro imo

Sometimes work gets in the way of new ideas, expanding etc. We have an easy Friday late afternoon, to wind down and chat about the week just gone and what went wrong or what we should have done et .

Couple came into the shop, placed a box of business cards on the counter. He’d had them done elsewhere, but thought the telephone number didn’t stand out enough, which it didn’t tbh.

Can I either make it bigger!!!!!!!

Or can I print a sticker with a bigger text on it to cover it!!!!!!!

Or can I print on the rear, which was blank?????

After a brief conversation on how it’s important to look the part and all options would make the wrong impression….

Last Saturday morning, when the manager came to work, she found the salon door open. The beauty therapist had stopped the night and was asleep up stairs in her room.

We sent her home straight away and took her keys off her, told her to come in on Wednesday. We found two bottles of vodka and some wine bottles when we emptied her bin. ( she normally does this)

We have now let her go, her mother now knows the full extent of what’s going on, so we hope she’ll get some support from her family.

We have had two dtg printers

A resolute and dtg from yes.

    Both fine, no issues..

The main issue is enough work to warrant having one. My personal view is waiting for the customer to walk in, spend time looking at the image they’re want on the top, explaining about why a soft feel t shirt is better than an other brand.etc. Isn’t worth the £15 you might get for the 30+ mins you have to spend on the project. Then another 15 mins cleaning time at the end of the day.

On the other hand, if you have a portfolio of ready made designs that you sell at markets or eBay, then yes it can be worthwhile if you create a production line of shirt treating, printing and pressing.

Heads at £500 a pop must be planned for, for some reason they seem to go through them a lot. White ink is the problem, a cmyk machines should be trouble free, but people want black t shirts…

We had an engineer out to our old jv3 yesterday, for the pump.

He examined the head and noted all 3 heads were scratched, just on the coating as the print out was fine.

I asked what would be the problem because of that and he said the coating on the head helps keep it clean, a scratch could cause droplets

We rang them to see if their printable was the same colour as their normal etch. As we had 2 printed panels and 3 just etch. They sent a sample and it was the same colour

But they suggest we try to print on the normal etch first.

While I agree with Martin to some extent
And I’m certainly not suggesting Signmaster might do this… But

Unless you get a list of parts replaced, how do you know it’s been refurbished. It could have only a check over, making sure everything is working with the view of lasting 3 months.

Surely any part changed should have a 12 months warranty or replacement

Which ever option you choose, it’s a gamble. One is cheaper with no warranty, the other more money and older with a very small warranty. No matter which one you buy, after 3 months you’re on your own.

If you can’t afford a new machine outright, I’d look at putting the cash down on one and getting a small loan over 2 years so you get a new, modern faster machine with 2 years warranty

What’s the age difference. If it’s a lot the performance and quality of the print could be a lot different.

I’d go newer every time. 3 months is nothing. Small issues are well covered on YouTube and the boards which allow for self fixes.

We have an old jv3 which we use for banners only. It’s at a stage where parts are hard to source, so pretty soon it’s heading for the scrap heap depending on the repair.
Don’t forget repairs are a fact of life, an amount of money should always be put aside for them, printers will always go wrong just as you’re about to do a large important print run
