  • Letter fixing stencils – method and materials

I often see what look to be hand drawn letter fixing stencils, just wondering how those that do go about ensuring the letters are at the correct spacing initially? Just cut out a piece of foam PVC perhaps to correct dimensions?

Looking to source paper rolls to run through the plotter and draw them out that way, does anybody have a go to supplier for material? Cost from our current supplier seems a bit steep for what it is.

    Thanks in advance!

    Re plotting paper.
I use standard 1000 guage lining paper that I use when prepping for wallpaper.
    22" wida x 33ft approx.
    Cost approx 3 euro.

    We use these guys…

But the alternative priced Xerox paper. No problems with it @ £6.19 for a 50 metre roll!

We just use a roll of that coloured vinyl that we never use, let’s face it we all have a roll lol.

Cut as a negative, flat cut lettering just drops inside. We roughly trim away the visible backing paper to reveal the sign or wall underneath and stick.

I’ve seen others apply vinyl to the sign, then apply the flat cut lettering on top of the applied vinyl.

All Print supplies do a plotting paper, not very heavy gauge but quite adequate other than on a windy day. I seem to recall that Hexis do paper as well but a heavier weight.

I use my Cadet printer to print an outline of the lettering onto wallpaper lining paper which you can buy in rolls from the likes of B&Q
