MemberAugust 24, 2015 at 11:04 pm in reply to: Vinyl onto blackboard paint – help needed, please? We have successfully printed and contour cut the low tack repostionable fabrics that are meant to be removed without damage although not sure what detail you need. Gekotex from Tepede is the one we have had most success with.
If the detail in the text is too fine to cut you could print a black background and use a panel instead? The printed fabric has quite a Matt appearance and may blend in with paint.
The rough texture of the blackboard paint may make sticking taped text tricky and even Gekotex will pull off poorly adhered paint so it’s going to be "suck it and see" I fear!

MemberAugust 20, 2015 at 8:12 pm in reply to: CorelDraw X7 Rasterlink plugin problem – help please? This could be an option for larger decals/stickers but for the smaller ones we need to have smaller areas than the 1370 wide material to ensure the accuracy of cut is maintained. Some of our stickers are just a few mm wide and cut accuracy on files like this needs print areas no bigger than A3 size. Not to mention the several hundred legacy files we have already laid out ready to print.
I have posed the question to Hybrid but as yet await their reply. They hadn’t heard of this problem before – as usual!
I am starting to be concerned that this may be a windows 10 issue and if I get a chance will try the same plugin on my win7 PC to check the results.

MemberAugust 20, 2015 at 1:24 pm in reply to: UV Lightbar from Colorific now installed on my machine! Thanks Rob
My conversations with Colorific said more or less what you describe works with Roland software but not with Rasterlink.
The white square would be processed only after the cutting was complete on the previous file. Equally, the next file in the queue would be processed after white square, leaving a large piece of waste vinyl in between each job.As I said, this does look like an excellent product with the correct software and the additional support now from Roland does make this more viable. However, with Steph’s problems in mind it seems there are still some areas of concern.
By the way, we use a bulk system running Sun inks and the cost comparison with these is not so favourable, not to mention the convenience of much larger tanks. I did ask colorific if they intended supply a bulk system but they dodged the question saying it wasn’t necessary at this stage.

MemberAugust 19, 2015 at 9:38 pm in reply to: UV Lightbar from Colorific now installed on my machine!Rob
Many of the jobs we produce on the CJV are shorts runs of stickers around .5-1m long, printed and cut in succession, often unattended and fed onto the take-up, sometimes 20 jobs in a row with minimal gaps in between.
For this to work with the Lightbar, each job has to be fully run past the lights to cure them before running back to cut. At the time we looked at this there was no sensible way to automatically push the print forward and then return to cut it without building in around .5m of extra vinyl into each job. I think the Roland software had some fix for doing this and also the Lightbar was closer, but with rasterlink on the mimaki it was not an option. It didn’t seem as if it had been thought through properly and any gains in durability and speed (we have to build in a 5 min delay with forced air drying) were offset by costs in both vinyl and the more expensive inks.
Overall it didn’t suit our mode of production but I’m sure it has benefits for other users.
Hope this makes sense.

MemberAugust 19, 2015 at 5:32 pm in reply to: UV Lightbar from Colorific now installed on my machine!I too was impressed with the durability of test prints and did for a while consider converting our Mimaki CJV30 to the Lightbar system, however I was put off by the waste of vinyl needed to pass the print beyond the lightbar prior to cutting.
Since that time I have spoken with several colleagues who implied that in their experience, Colorific ink quality has been too variable and that we had made the correct decision to avoid this system.
Reading through these posts, it seems to me that the problem either lies with the curing process or the ink quality since everything else has been checked by the engineer and others with the same system are clearly satisfied. I am not sure how you check the quality of the UV lamps but presumably trying a different batch of ink will be a simpler process and one that colorific can carry out at minimal cost.
I am not saying that Colorific are unique in this aspect as we have had a similar ink quality issue with our current supplier, but I will say that once they were aware the problem they immediately set about curing the issue and now all is well again.
Perhaps you could check your ink batch against others on here to see if anyone is using the same ink as yourself?

MemberMay 19, 2015 at 1:29 pm in reply to: Help required sourcing application tape supplier, please?I always thought it was me damaging the edges on the older rolls that caused this but maybe its the amount of tension on the inner parts of the roll affecting the adhesive?
We tend to use the clear pvc tape if we can these days but it can be a pain on large panels.
-
If you have the space then there is no reason not to have the 64 " as you can always use smaller media but in my experience 54" is the maximum that a single person can handle with safety. Not just the heavy 50M rolls of vinyl and banner but also cutting across the width without special tools or help.
If you need to work single handed I suggest checking out the media rolls at 64" to see if you will be comfortable handling these as you do not tend to stock all medias in all sizes for obvious reasons and you may not need the extra width.

All prices are being maintained but distribution is a little slower while they get their act together.
May be worth contacting them to see if they still have the q tape available? Personally I switched to conform paper tape a while back when I got problems with the edges on q tape causing rips when unrolling. -

For removable graphics we use Gekotex printable polyester available from tepede graphics. It has a Matt slightly textured appearance, contour cuts nicely and is not too expensive. Reposition and removal is good as long as the paintwork is sound.
We use solvent but there may be a pigment ink version. Speak to Clare at tepede on 01403 786867

http://www.baltled.com/en/bp-v12-600Product nothing special though – just an ip rated 12v 60w led driver, plenty of reasonable alternatives available (here for example http://www.ledemporium.co.uk/12v-60w-led-power-supply )
May be worth steering clear of cheap eBay variants though if you want it to last.

Contact adhesives are great where both surfaces are nice and flat and you have help applying big sheets as there is no slippage and you will not get a second chance.
For where the ply is a bit rough or applying single handedly then the trend is toward a PU adhesive (commonly Gorilla glue but plenty of trade alternatives). These are similar to PU foam and the slight foaming action gap fills any rough surfaces and until it sets fully (10-20 mins but quicker if surfaces are dampened) you can reposition and clamp if necessary.

We had one of these for many years before upgrading to a pneumatic press and it performed well. I think you will find the base plate is probably OK its just the ptfe cover that has been destroyed. We had ours for 15 years+ and it never looked like that, which makes me wonder how its been treated. Our old one sits in our store as a back-up and looks like new by comparison.
There is a bearing on the cam which applies the pressure when the handle is operated and if this isnt greased it does wear a bit making the operation "clunky". Otherwise nor much to go wrong other than the element of course.
This looks a bit ropey to be honest but will probably give a more even heat distribution than some of the cheap chinese copies.

We have a 7000 that often has the same problem. It’s usually caused by the cutter being too close to the wall behind it. When the cutter pulls through vinyl, often quite slowly when prefeeding, it then fires it back to the rear at full speed ready to cut, but if there isn’t room behind for the vinyl to drop nicely into the basket it will lift a little off the deck causing the rear detector to think there is no vinyl. Usually, pulling the cutter away from the wall and opening the rear basket more will prevent this happening. Cold, stiff vinyl makes the problem worse. While you can slow down the cutting feed quite easily, slowing down the feed return speed is not so simple so we have to live with this.

For me the Mimaki had the edge on quality (for solid spot type colours) and the full solvent inks offer a better scratch resistance and quicker drying when compared to our Mutoh.
We have installed a 9" fan directly behind the printer to extract but when solid printing reds and blacks I still get complaints from the office staff in the next room and keep the door shut. It doesnt bother me to be honest but it is noticable.
Price seems about right for the Mimaki but I havent looked at Rolands recently.
Service from Hybrid is impeccable but the ongoing maintenance contract is quite expensive although we consider worth it.

Hi Chris
You could be right but it does let you select a spot colour but the effect is strange. Just a very washed out version, like a tint of white. Have got round this by selecting a CMYK similar to pantone needed.

Yes you are correct with your assumptions. The gerber will print in one continuous length and use 2m x 300mm of foil
The Summa will print 100mm bands to make up the 2M length and presumably will be more economic on foil although in my experience the banding will be evident.

We only ever use the foam cleaning swabs as prescribed in the manual (and supplied with the printer) for head cleaning – not cotton buds!
The new capping head solved a very similar problem on my CJV.
-
We often had an issue with the magenta channel on our 6 colour cjv with a portion of the block missing in the way you describe. We suspected a capping problem and hybrid sent us a new capping head which we fitted and this solved the blocking for about a year although I have noticed it starting to creep back. The usual method to clear is, normal clean, deep clean, head swab with cleaner with a test in between each process. I know the instructions say dont touch the heads with the foam swab but the engineer does!

My guess is you will not get the samples. I asked for similar samples and just received their standard (albeit very impressive) pack of samples, some of which featuring foils which arent in their normal list.
Undeterred, I approached the Summa/artsystems stand at SignUK and eventually got them to produce 200mm discs of spot colour to test the overlap problem. Frankly the results were dissapointing and the laps were very obvious despite running several trials using virtually all the options for adjustment available. Alan Flynn got involved as well as one of the Summa techies but there was no soloution at the show and I think we were supposed to receive "better" samples once they had had more time to try this, but these havent arrived yet!
In all honesty, the print quality/eveness across the 100mm printing width was not as good as the edge, showing a marked difference from one side to the other. This makes joining of the bands very noticable and not somthing I could sell. I am of course talking about spot colours here, as the CMYK is far superior to the edge although the screen effects do still as staggered lines occaisionally on the 100mm joins.
I may still have the roundel samples here if you want me to send one to you?
No way you can redesign slightly to fit within the 300mm width of the edge?

MemberJune 10, 2011 at 4:14 pm in reply to: JV33 printing with white ink..how to do it??Phil
What percentages of cover are you using for the 2 white heads. We were told to use 40% when we were shown how to use it but have found that unless we use 100% on each the white is too thin. To solve the running problems of using so much ink its necessary to slow down the print by building in a second delay on each pass in the profile. This slows the print down to a crawl but does give sharp prints with dense whites at some cost though as you are using twice as much ink. Also remember to shake the white carts before use and ideally each day as they are still being cleaned even when not used for print.

You bought a £1000+ cutter and for 3 years have been cutting around prints with scissors and have lost the instructions and now want someone to tell you what they say and how the cutter should be calibrated?
Have you considered at any point this choice career may be inappropriate?
If not try googling fc5000 manual and reading the PDF – there are clear instructions for aligning the print with cut although this is usually quite a small amount of inaccuracy. If you can use scissors to cut this the odds are it’s a software problem. It’s difficult to say what’s going on without a fuller picture of what you are using to send the data and where the error s occurring.
-
It also begs the question- if you had a versacam for six years and it was so reliable, why did you rush out and buy a Mimaki?
-
We got ours from Betaquip – 5mm thick with 1" grid underlay which helps square up cuts some time as 5mm sheet is quite translucent. Phone number was 01280 843082 but a quick search of web doesnt show any site so cant be sure they are still going.

Are you using the pre-set depth Mathias blades or the adjustable holder?
The pre-set type have very little blade showing beyond the holder and its possible that two layers of MD5 are right on the limit of blade length? This doesnt explain how you can cut into the backing though which may be down to either uneven film thickness (unlikely) or as you say, lamination problems.

A quick update to my previous post after gleaning some info from the Mimaki/Art Systems stand at the NEC.
It IS possible to to print and cut while using the take up device. Since the take disengages during cutting the the CJV will pull off the printed material, cut it and then roll it back onto take up when the next print job commences. Using this method, albeit limiting the each job to no more than around 1-1.2M, its possible to run a series of jobs unattended. I can vouch for this as it works perfectly, yet this was never explained during installation. You will need to build in a drying delay using the cut options in rasterlink and I usually choose to turn off the heaters here too after printing to save electricity.
Colin
-
Have you seen an example of the medals you are supposed to supply? Are they just a flat cut material (ie acrylic) or cast from metal, resin or something similar?
If cast then the cost of producing the mould could be high so you would need a fair order to justify costs.

The solvent fumes are heavier than air so tend to "drop" off the printed surface rather than rise into the air. We have installed a 300mm wall fan directly behind our CJV30 -130 at low level and when run at full power this copes with the extraction unless full flood coats of red are being printed.
Whatever extraction you use, remember to allow for the same amount of air to enter the room or the extraction will be ineffective. An open window will suffice but obviously not near the outlet of the fan.
Incidently, we have also just made our own drying unit for the CJV which now allows us to print and cut in one operation with a 15min delay built into the software. Total cost around £30 for our 12 fan unit which is a bit better than the £700 we were quoted for the drying unit!

Polyester backings are common on top end vinyls because the are completely impervious so offer better performance, particularly in high humidity situations.
I have also seen the clear vinyl and clear backing material that Hybrid use for the samples and demonstrations and it does seem to be a high quality product (why use anything else for a demo?) but I havent seen it for sale.
The main benefit Chris is that you can see a white backed clear decal much better on completely clear material, hence its us for demonstrating the white printing capabilities of the Mimaki range.

We have had the cjv30-130 for about 18 months now and agree that with 99% of materials head strikes have not been a problem. very smooth banner which can cause static to build up has been the only issue and a slight modification by mimaki has sorted this problem although I had already ditched the tricky polypropylene medium.
I haven’t used a Roland as the demo I received came nowhere near the quality of our previous valuejet so wasn’t tempted. The main advantage for us is the durability of the full solvent prints which stand up to lot more treatment than the ecosolvent used in the mutoh (and also most rolands – I think?)
Print and cut is not as foolproof as you would expect from this machine but better than we ever got with a separate cutter. Bear in mind that the maximum length you can print and cut is only around 1.2m as the take up doesn’t work in reverse so it will drag all over the floor. Also don’t expect to cut through a printed area of vinyl for at least 12 hours without the vinyl curling up. We have just built our own dryer unit to help with this problem and found it shortens the delay a lot. There was a £700 option for something similar when bought the printer but was dissuaded from buying it by our supplier.
Print quality is usually spot on and profiles are not that fussy so easy to use. We run 6colours plus White inks and while I prefer the photo quality of the light inks the White inks are just too expensive to run.
We have had quite a few engineer calls over this period under our 2 year warranty mainly to deal with an ongoing motor current problem which ended up with a new main board swap which seems to have cured the fault. Otherwise just simple cleaning maintenance to keep print tip top.
Up at nec myself Thursday but any other questions just let m know.

Cardsave are part of streamline and do have much better rates than most of the banks. They also offer advantages of managing your account online and producing payment pages that you can send to your customers to pay by linking to a payment portal (a bit like google checkout). Incidently they are one of the biggest card servicing companies in the UK and europe but up until recently have not gone direct to merchants butu through banks etc (hence the nat west/streamline tie in). We calculated we could save around £200 per year on card costs which isnt great but worth having.
We are still thinking about switching as they can only offer us a virtual terminal (computer/iphone) instead of the normal card machine due to the amount of "customer not present" transactions we have. We are reluctant to give up our card machine but would really like online management as the statements from barclaycard are very unhelpful when trying to allocate payments.

I have not previously seen the primera systems which are very interesting. However our decals have to be on flexible vinyl and occasionally fuel-proof so not really suitable for the medias printable with laser technology. White print on clear is also a must for some products which have running on both printers. I suppose what we do for this side of the business is more in line with manufacturing than sign making so probably fitting more into the niche gap the versauv seems to aim at. Will still need to check the running costs though.

Hi Jason
It seems that most of the installations are for prototyping etc but as long as ink costs aren’t exorbitant I don’t see why these couldn’t be used for high value jobs as well as the run of the mill work. We produce a lot of quality/high value decals on either a mimaki cjv or gerber edge but when using the cjv (full solvent) since most decals have to be cut through the print we have to wait 24 hours before cutting which defeats the object of a print/ cut machine. It would be so much more productive for us to be able to send a job that actually prints and cuts in one process. Latex print could be the answer in future but I don’t think there is a print/cut option yet? We are also looking at a dc4sx but think that the overlap banding problem may not be acceptable.Does anyone know if the uv ink used is flexible and resistant to cracking?
Thanks

10mm black forex is not that common. You are more likely to find someone with 5mm black which could always be bonded together prior to cutting to give your 10mm thickness.
Sorry not in your area myself!

MemberMarch 31, 2011 at 9:45 am in reply to: is applying vinyl to water bottles the best method? We produce a lot labels, both clear and white for personalising products like this and have never had a problem with them coming off. Digital print is the simplest way to go if you have the options. Price is always an issue with promotional give aways so cheap vinyl labels for short runs are the only solution.

From your post I assume you have checked the above items already and have a little technical knowledge on this cutter. I assume you use mainly 1200 or 600mm width materials like most signmakers so it is possible that the grit/pattern on the bed rollers has either worn away (or infilled) on the more commonly used rollers. This will result in the sort of slippage you mention and is not easily resolved since depending on cutter, its a fairly major job to replace these. Check them out with your finger to see if there more "tread" on the 1000mm position roller. If you are feeling brave it may be possible to dismantle the cutter and relocate this roller into the 1200 position?
If its just clogged try the sticky tape method of cleaning the grit roller ie lift the pinch roller and place a long strip of clear tape or vinyl sticky side down below the pinch roller and drop carriage to pinch onto the grit roller then (with cutter switched off) pull tape back and forth to remove debris from depressions of grit roller.
Hope this makes sense.

This has happened again on two different PCs and as you say, a complete reinstall has not solved the problem.
I will try a new user install to see if this cures the problem.
Has anyone attempted to install Rasterlink with Corel X5 yet?
Thanks

Thanks Alan, I still cant find anyone that has tried the rasterlink plug-in so I may contact Hybrid and see if they have idea?

I thought I had heard that CM had been upgraded to work with x5 but would like to know if anyone had tried this yet? Don’t have the problem you mention with our x4 +cm2 installation, just the usual grouped items issues and the speed(or lack of it)
Incidentally, the quickest fix I found for large files where only a small section is to be cut is to just copy and paste the section into a new blank file and plot this. Page size makes no difference as cm2 always plots the whole area.
Also would like to hear from anyone using mimaki rasterlink with x5

Does any body have raster link rip for mimaki cjv30 or cut master for graphtec cutters working with x5 yet?
Not much point upgrading for me unless these plug-ins are available.

I was really keen to see this launched as we are quite involved in the promotional market where this is clearly aimed. Identify, the laser people have a similar printer with a larger bed currently using solvents (with white) but have promised a UV upgrade for this. Again the price is too high at around 16K and given that you are up against screen and pad printers, its difficult to see where you can make any money back at these prices.
Traditionally promotional print is very cheap on pens, usb sticks and the like and give the slow speed/small bed I cant see these going anywhere except schools etc. at this price.
If they can get one down nearer the 5-8K mark we may be interested but first I have got to find somewhere to put it!
PS Chris – Identify sell theirs alongside the lasers as a print and cut solution but i agree a pricey alternative to a pc60

You will need to use a blockout banner material to ensure the image doesn’t show through to the other side and unless there are suitable wire rope fixings you will need to supply these. There are companies that supply (and therefore take responsibility for) road spanning blank banners like this one: http://www.boldscanshop.com/pvc-banners … nners.html and will also print for you if required.
Fitting can also be a nightmare as the road often has to be closed. I know that the one that goes up across our local busy high street is fitted on a Sunday by the Fire Brigade but don’t know how they manage to organise that!

Hi Andy
Thanks for replying. I tried everything else to no avail and eventually did a complete X4 reinstall and as you say it cured the fault. Still not sure what caused it although I do remember X4 falling over once when trying to send a complicated file to RL

MemberMarch 19, 2010 at 1:25 pm in reply to: Roland VP540i – ordering today but need last minute adviceThe problem with asking the Mimaki/Roland question is that you are only going to get biased answers. People select (and stand by) their printers because they choose them for their own use. We chose Mimaki because after examinating comparative prints etc it did what we needed.
I suggest you contact your favoured suppliers and if possible get them to demo or at very least print your files so you can compare the results. If you need a contact for the Mimaki speak to Emma at Isub digital who helped me with all sorts of samples etc. Hybrid, the importers also have superb backup for these Mimakis.

Is anybody successfully running rasterlink/finecut (4 or 5) for Mimaki CJV30 or cutting master 2 for Graphtec with X5?

The grafityp material was was good and proper vinyl but they stopped importing it or it was stopped being manufactured in Germany (i think) some time ago. We used loads of it through both laser copiers and laser printers with too many problems with print or printer.
The CL media and other polyesters take a print OK but they are too rigid to conform to anything but a flat surface and the as with all polyesters the adhesive isnt great.
It is possible to use some grades of vinyl produced for screen printing. This is coated to accept inks and works to some degree with the polyester toners in most colour lasers. The trick to making it stay on the vinyl is to heat again through a laminating machine on highest setting using a release sheet.
However, prior to buying our solvent printers we discovered a way to make our own laser printable vinyl from our favourite stock vinyl (Oracal 751) which performs just like normal vinyl and worked through every colour laser we tried. I don’t want to post this secret on an open forum but if any members want to PM me I can give some advice or costs for the manufacture?

Photoshop has a similar automate feature but even easier still is the Contact sheet option however you will have to manually save each page.

We have been doing these for years with our gerber edge. A summa dc series printer will work too.

MemberNovember 18, 2009 at 1:47 pm in reply to: I am getting incomplete cuts…not random thoughIf you have eliminated the blade then it is worth looking at the cutting strip. Any nicks or wear in parts of the strip will result in unequal pressure in parts of the cut and if these coincide with a line on the x axis then this will not cut through. You can usually reverse a cutting strip to check to see if this is the problem.

MemberNovember 18, 2009 at 10:50 am in reply to: does anyone have any updated news on the mimaki CJV3?Nice if you can get it but my guess is a spoof site set up just to get your money! There are lots of these scams originating in Indonesia and Nigeria either offering goods at ridiculous prices or offering to buy your goods and then using cloned cards. I must get 2-3 emails a week that get through the spam filter looking for various "parts" or products to these countries.
My advice is beware!

Had our CJV30 for a few months now and rate it very highly. Quality of print is superior to Roland if you need very fine quality although pos slower if you opt for white inks. Tracking and take up system work brilliantly for unattended printing and accuracy of cut is outstanding, being the best I have experienced so far and often obviating need for a bleed in the print.

Thanks Jill, you are brilliant!
I had an inkling it was chancery and typed it into whatthefont but the close hits didn’t get BLACK chancery so I guess that confirms you are superior 😉
All the best

Just bumping in case this missed the attention of the font sleuths earlier 😀
I know it originated on a mac if that helps?
