  • Problems cuting White backed labels

Posted by Martin Oxenham on April 28, 2011 at 1:46 pm

We are having problems contour cutting labels that have been reverse printed on clear and backed off in white. Normal way round cuts with no problem
Material is MD5 and equivalent clear, But despite playing with the pressure it does not seem to cut the clear all round if you increase the pressure then its too much and cuts the paper. The only thing I can put this down to is that we put the two layers together wet as our laminator is set up for laminate and its a pain taking it all apart for short runs of these window stickers. Has anyone else experienced this or have any ideas. The printer is a VP-540 with blades from Edward Mathias.

Are you using the pre-set depth Mathias blades or the adjustable holder?

The pre-set type have very little blade showing beyond the holder and its possible that two layers of MD5 are right on the limit of blade length? This doesnt explain how you can cut into the backing though which may be down to either uneven film thickness (unlikely) or as you say, lamination problems.

must admit were having a few problems with blade pressures on 2 machines which i have put down to temps as over night still quite cold but hot during the day. plus the heat from the printer heaters, all not very stable.

Man I don’t even want to get started with blade pressures, at the moment to get a decent cut on vinyl i need at least 125g (versacam) and laminated is lucky to get through the second layer at 250! Roland have no idea and I have no idea, even a new blade is only good for a couple of days and it’s back to ramping up the pressure, and absolutely no marks on the media clamps so it’s not that……

If anyone can solve this I’d be amazed and eternally grateful,

I’m also having the same problem as the original post with clear static cling backed with white… it cant seem to cut all the way through. And ours is dry laminated.

Just a suggestion Martin, to avoid wet application have you tried laminating dry like you would on a vehicle? I do this a lot it’s the same technique, I tape down the print and then tape the laminate over the top in the middle, remove half of the backing paper and work it in with a soft applicator and then turn around rinse and repeat, the same as popping a full colour prints on the side of a van or mags!

I gave up wet a while back and I’m glad I did, I have never looked back (except when it goes bad…lol)

Check out the pad cutter. It’s possible that the pad cutter to have a hole all the way it’s distance or maybe not the entire pad cutter is damaged but the part in the left side which is mostly use in print/cut jobs. I also met this situation and purchased one of those pad cutters from Belgium(digiprint) – it’s very cheap but can cause you a huge headache.

how your cutting strip is looking? If it is a little bit damaged cutting through thick material like this could be painful.

do you only have the integrated plotter or also a standalone one on which you could compare?

Try knocking the temperature settings up a couple of degrees and slow the cut and up speed right down. This will give the vinyl the chance to warm up evenly as it passes over the heater. Sometimes the rearmost or outermost edges of the vinyl won’t cut all the way through because this part of the vinyl is a few degrees colder.
