  • Vinyl onto blackboard paint – help needed, please?

Posted by Iain George on August 24, 2015 at 4:50 pm

Not been here for a while as have been doing a lot of Sublimation and garment stuff recently. I have been asked by a local pub if I can provide them with some text for their blackboards that will be changed every 3-4 months. They are internal boards so no weather to contend with. My concern is that after 3-4 months when I go to change the text it would remove the paint and I would have to repaint the boards every time. Is there a low tack vinyl or do you think cling vinyl would work. I am going to get some samples but not sure of what?

    Many thanks
    Iain

Have you thought about flooding the boards in blackboard vinyl and then using cad cut lettering over the top ?
least that way the lettering could be removed without damaging the underneath

I had thought of that but the painted area is actually an area of wall with and dado frame around it with an uplight fitted
about 200mm from the top. Hope that makes sense. So applying the blackboard vinyl would involve removing the uplight which, as all they want is some text, may not be the answer.
This is the kind of light I mean.

We have successfully printed and contour cut the low tack repostionable fabrics that are meant to be removed without damage although not sure what detail you need. Gekotex from Tepede is the one we have had most success with.

If the detail in the text is too fine to cut you could print a black background and use a panel instead? The printed fabric has quite a Matt appearance and may blend in with paint.

The rough texture of the blackboard paint may make sticking taped text tricky and even Gekotex will pull off poorly adhered paint so it’s going to be "suck it and see" I fear!

Oracal, 3M, and probably most of the others all make a range of removable vinyls that should stick to the blackboard paint and will come off easily for up to 2 years without leaving any residue and without damaging the paint underneath.
