My brother has a similar business to yours. I had a mimaki brilliant machine for a sign maker.
For your kind of short runs I would look at a HP Latex. No daily maintenance required & can sit for ages & start printing perfect.
A solvent Roland or mimaki won’t suit your short print runs & you will spend more time cleaning heads & maintenance.
I suggest the HP latex 315 & you will also be able to offer posters & canvass prints as well. Very easy used & cheap enough new. Heads for HPs are only £90 each & change yourself where a mimaki or Roland head could be £2500 & require an engineer.
My advice with all new machines buy off a company that can give you back up & support.

We sell loads of the 3d Gels. We were making them in-house but because of demand we just out source the making of the digits now. Good margin on them & easy made. Only problem we have is you have to carry a large stock of digits & depending on regs you can run out of them very quick.
We have looked at carbon & 4d but it’s more stock to carry & 99% of customers are happy with the gels.

I said sure what are you worried about wasn’t much profit in the job. He turned & informed me he had 10 fitters with no work to do & finance on 6 printers & vans to pay still. Thanks David I have good guys. We hover the unit every time before a wrap & we clean clean & clean the surfaces before putting any vinyl near it. Funny that car was wrapped Matt blue before & looked perfect when we stripped it the gloss showed loads of defects on the paint. We had to get it clay barred to get a good finish on the gloss wrap.

Depends on what your doing. Bought a HP Latex last year very happy with it. Great for wraps. Prints would be slightly duller than Solvent but never had any complaints. Looked at the Epson printer as well fine machine but the vinyl companies won’t support there drying times so no warranty on printed wraps.

My accounts guy got me to follow this for pricing
1) Design (most designers are charging £400) some design can take days.
2) Add your mark up on your wrap allowing for your operating costs, ink, wages, heat & light, Printer & laminator Wear & tear this can be surprising.
3) fitting we charge per hour per man. We allow 2 days for most wraps. 1st half day stripping handles. Lights etc & cleaning. 2nd day finish wrap, rebuild & post heat which is as important as cleaning. Here a video of my favorite full wrap

2) little to no maintenance on a Latex. Your not doing enough printing to keep s Solvent going -

Bought a new HP Latex & Summa plotter came with the flexi sign / SAI Production Manager. The machines are brilliant quality prints & easier on ink than my old Mimaki & the 60” HP Summa plotter is a real work horse. Flexi sign has been a nightmare from Day 1. SAI have been bluffing since day 1 blaming my PC spec although it was the spec they requested & runs other Flexi fine. 3 PCs later & £2k still doesn’t send data, reads media & stops the printer at random time. So then they blame window 10 so change this & then SAI blame my network so get it independently tested then they just ignore us & bounce me around the place. End result is that I got Onyx installed today by my supplier who is as disgusted as me with Flexi Production Manager & there back up service.

MemberJanuary 7, 2019 at 11:21 pm in reply to: Thoughts – advertising rock bottom rices on your websiteFunny I have sat down a few times to do a pricing structure for vehicle graphics even just to give customers a rough guideline. Ie Ford Transit single Colour VS Full Wrap bits it’s all in the betweeen stuff, chevrons, pictures, design. I have broken it down to 3 levels of fixed design charges, price per/m of material incorporating average overheads (was interesting reading) & then separate fitting charge with the aim as we get bigger we will be subbing out wrapping so I know how much to pay them. So basically Design+material+fitting = charge

MemberJuly 14, 2018 at 11:13 am in reply to: HP Latex Vs Epson, views & opinions on these printers please?Agreed if it’s commercial vans & cars yeah it can be planned. We do a lot of rally cars so u can have the car fully wrapped perfect no pressure maybe even a spare bumper & client goes for test drive of his £300k car & hits the side. It has to be replaced ASAP to get the car to the rally. Client doesn’t Car about the process he just wants the result & pays accordingly. Or the second common issue is the owner gets a new sponsor last minute, it’s always last minute with rally cars! Also it will be easier to train staff to wrap. Only way is practice but u don’t want them messing up a solvent print that takes 24hours to get ready.
