A Fed-up Sign maker has taken vigilante action against a customer he claims hasn’t paid him.

Graham Crawley, who owns Auld Lang Signs in Dreghorn, plastered a huge sticker over the shop sign of Dilley Dalley Books in Bank Street on Sunday which said: “The woman inside this shop doesn’t pay her bills. This sign will be removed when she does.”

But book shop owner Jackie Dalley claims she is the victim in the dispute and says Mr Crawley has been following her and taking photos of her.

She told the Times: “This is a matter between myself and Mr Crawley. He is completely out of order. If there was an issue, there are correct procedures to follow.

“I’m a small business. I have a children’s book shop. He is threatening me and taking pictures of me.

“I am the victim here. He is not a very nice man, I’ve discovered.”

Mr Crawley claims he has tried to get money from Mrs Dalley from previous work he carried out for her and because she has allegedly refused to pay, he took drastic action and covered the shop sign with the giant sticker.

However, Mrs Dalley refused to confirm whether she owed Mr Crawley money.

She added: “There’s a dispute between us but that is between me and him.”

Mrs Dalley has since taken both the sticker and her original shop sign down, but Mr Crawley has claimed on his Facebook page that he will return to put up another sign which says “She’s still no paid”.

However, Mrs Dalley has reported the incident to the police.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said: “We have received a report and enquiries are ongoing.”

This story made me smile, not that it was ha-ha funny for either party, but more so because We have all been in this position at some point over the years and understand just how infuriating it is when a customer is blatantly not paying and ignoring your demands whilst sporting their new sign!

My sympathy overall goes to the sign maker. they are trying to earn a living and just want to be paid. but even using these extreme measures that they are pushed to use, is costing them even more money. I imagine this is down to his principles on the matter at this stage… and I do realise there are two sides to every story.

Has anyone ever resorted to, or considered such extreme measures?

I’ve never actually done this with a sticker, but did start taking down a sign on a Indian restaurant (about 10yrs ago now I guess) that hadn’t paid the balance of the bill, I’d given many fair warnings that I was going to do it and that the sign belongs to me until paid for. They gave the argument that it was trespassing, to which I commented that I’d be on a public pavement and wouldn’t touch their shop or property while removing the sign.

I turned up and still they wouldn’t pay, boss was unavailable or something, I told them I will start taking it down, will chase for payment through the courts and then charge to put it back. Still nothing so I took the first panel down. by the time the second of five panels was down the boss miraculously appeared with enough cash to have paid the job ten times over. He wasn’t happy at me charging him 4 hours labour for my time that day but paid before I would put it back up!

I think in this instance… the fact she has removed the original shop sign suggests that she thinks that by taking the sign down, she won’t owe the money – kinda proves the guilt to me!

I remember when I started off, my cousin who ran it before me was owed some money.

My uncle threatened them, if it wasn’t paid by Friday, 9am Monday morning it’ll be taken down.

9am Monday morning he arrived at the shop to find it’s already gone 😆

Perhaps she’s taken the sign down to prevent the sign company removing it… other than out of principle there’s little point and value in removing it. A prime example of the need for a deposit.

Yes I’ve removed (and threatened to remove) signs in order to get paid. I’ve also held vans to ransom – refusing to allow them to be removed from my premises until payment was made in full. (This is quite legal in Scotland and is often used by small garages).

Best of all, I remember in the early days of UKSB there was a section to "out" bad and non payers where we could post details of anyone that had crossed us to avoid others getting their fingers burned. What happened to that then Rob Eh eh.. 😆

it was very popular to begin with but from memory. someone started winging saying…
"what if this… and what if that?"
then you lot crapped yourself and stopped posting in it. grow a pair! 😆 😆

joking aside, that forum got my company paid twice by two different customers and at least twice I know of UKSG members not being paid by people on this website. As soon as the post went up, or threatened to put up, they coughed up!

My mates landlord has a very novel way to deal with late rent…. He’s been known to place 2 ton rocks outside unit doors before, so you cant even get into the building…… (he also owns a quarry!).

    That seems to work 😆

I loved that page, would be good to see it back, I regularly see an old non paying, now ccj’d and dogs set-upon to settle customer getting his new vans done, all differing designs so presumably he’s working his way through signmakers further afield now!

    UPDATE:
Fed-up business owner has slapped a second sign on an Irvine bookshop claiming she STILL hasn’t paid him.

The under-fire owner of Dilley Dalley Book Shop in Bank Street has had her shop emblazoned with a sign claiming she owes fellow small business owners money.

Jackie Dalley, who owns the store, first hit the headlines when someone claiming to be from Dreghorn business Auld Lang Signs took vigilante action and covered her shop with a sign saying: "The woman inside this shop doesn’t pay her bills. This sign will be removed when she does."

Now, three weeks on, another sign has been plastered above the shop window saying "She’s still no paid".

Following the Times article about Dilley Dalley Book Shop, two authors and a removals company came forward claiming that Jackie Dalley, owed them money for services rendered.

Since then the removals company say Mrs Dalley has settled their bill, however the Times understands others are still claiming to be owed money.

The Times called Dilley Dally Book Store for a comment but it was closed for the Bank Holiday.

I notice the original sign that the first one covered isn’t there now, and it was placed over the fascia?

    Wonder who took it down?

Had several occasions over the years that drastic measures were taken after months (sometimes nearly a year) of chasing for payment. Here’s a small sample!

    1. 6 months of chasing for two 3×2 lightbox inserts. Final demand – money or they come down.
No money – took them down.
Call "Davey, Davey – you’ve embarrassed me in front of my dad. That’s no way to do business"
Agreed "money before I put back up…" tried to be fly…nope, got back in van. Money handed over…happy days.

    2. SAME customer, many years later. Large (6off 10×5) fasica fitted to a unit. 6 months on…and too many calls.
Rocked up – pulled out the ladders and the battery guns (paid PDQ).

    3. Building developer – couple of partners ordered signs, poles etc…like 4x 5m high poles and 10×5 panels.
Month of chasing – they’d fallen out and cancelled the cheque. Each refusing to pay the bill.
Drove up – "last chance" or they’re coming down. Site manager let me on. Out with the generator & a plasma-disk grinder. Dropped them like felling trees and he’s left with stumps in concrete. Re-used the now 4m poles and re-faced the panels.

    4. Woman got us to put up a load of correx & banners advertising her business…then ordered 5k flyers…then did a disappearing act. No answer, gone from location. Retrieved the signage and stored it along with the flyers.
Angry, angry rant a few weeks later when she re-surfaced. "Stole her signs"…OK, OK – we’ll put them up. Just pay for them and we’ll be each on our way. "I never had enough money to pay for them". Hmmm…sadly the law "obtaining goods by deception" has fallen by the wayside when they CAN’T or WON’T pay -(she didn’t know that though).
Apparently we were going to be sued…pain & suffering, blah, blah… they sat for a further 2 years before being binned.

    5. Took down a sign after 6 months of chasing. Guy phones the police "stole my sign". I show them the invoice "Ah, civil matter…see you later mate"

And a few more where you pull up – get the ladders out and THEY KNOW why you’re there…I’ve a reputation for following through…

I like your style david. Never let them get away with it. Morals and common sense states that your in the right to remove any work that has not been paid for.
A few years back i posted on here regarding a customer that owed me money, went bankrupt actually soon after the order. I handled it probably the wrong way and gave him a slap to remember, in the middle of the village with plenty of witnesses. Well the outcome was court and i was fined a wopping 180€ :smiles: . Obviously the response from most people on here was that i was wrong. However in reality it was definatly the right decision for me. People in the area now know not to take the piss and i havnt had a non payer since.
Not saying this is everyones style but the point is you cant ignore these things and let them get away with it. One way or another you need to prove a point

mm I’ve been in this position many times, its normally resolved by a warning of intention of removing signage, as soon as the ladder comes off the van cash amazingly finds its way into my hands. I have one to do next week, its not only the money , for me its the mental stress i suffer when this happens :bangshead: :bangshead:
