Paul Rafferty is an extremely gifted maker of signs…I’ve met him and he’s a nice chap too!…these examples are typical of his work and I just wish we could persuade him to do more stuff on the site here…he has so much to teach!

…very striking Gray…tyre treads continue to be very popular in certain vehicle designs – we’ve done more than a few! I wonder why? I suppose they are a cross between a ‘footprint’ in one way, and chevrons in another…they do catch yur’ eye – that’s for sure…

If it’s a point upon which the whole order depends then give us all the details (type of sign, weight, location of the table/sign/ durability, etc.) and we’ll all put our heads round it to find the best answer…

…find someone with a gerber edge and TALK TO THEM!…

I don’t mean work out a ‘good price’ either – I mean TALK TO THEM.

Most independant signmakers are in the same boat at one level or another and if they can help they will…

There’s always someone out there thinking; “I’ve just bought this Edge and now I have to make sure it earns its keep…if only someone wanted a regular supply just for a few months til’ I get on my feet…” etc. This isn’t taking advantage either, it’s just the way business works.

I would try to find someone sympathetic and eager (new) to help and then, when you’ve done a few thousand of these stickers and made a few dollars each then move on and get your won machine…in this way everyone wins.

good luck – don’t bite off more than you can chew – sorry to say but you must always consider the ‘worst-case scenario’ so in the way I’ve described no-one takes any chances and no-one losses their pants if it all goes belly-up! Some might see this as the ‘little guy’s way of doing it’…but I’m a great believer in the old phrase…”slowly, slowly catchy monkey!” 😉

    not too bad Andrew… 😎

The lower phrase sits nicely over the two doors, the logo on the side-window looks a treat. I’d have liked to have seen the phone number move back onto the door as there seems to be no reason for it to be so ‘out on its own’. Be careful stretching stuff like you have the ‘Furniture Medic’ phrase. If you want text to stand out more then it’d be better to use a heavier typestyle than stretching it. Finally, if you ran a simple pin-line through the fuel cap and door handles from front to back – it would have linked the Furniute Medic/logo group and the phone number nicely together.

These are just casual observations. It’s easy to take someone elses finished work and suggest improvements so don’t take too much notice 😛

You’ve done the hard part, which is coming up with the initial idea and making it all happen! – well done….

…so sorry to read your post Phil 🙁

it must make you sick to the stomach to have such a thing happen, but rest assured that you are not alone. Everyone here is with you in understanding the determination and resolve it takes to stand alone as a small business and the reward that hard work and integrity bring – whilst such scum could never know or possibly understand the fulfillment of achieving anything worthwhile – whatsoever!

Alone, any one of us will achieve more in one day than any one of them will in their entire lifetime – whilst together, we have a strength that binds not only this community but also the one in which we live and work…

    Hi Martin…

I’ve done a few bits and pieces in my time. I always found it a LOT cheaper buying the paint from the builders merchants (cus it’s used on site to mark the ground etc) than from the specialist sign/trade suppliers.

I’ve marked out things in various ways before – including using the wheelie machines. I’ve used duck tape and large cardboard sheets with slots cut into them too!

If there is no wind, the stuff doesn’t acutally drift too far and if you marked out parking bays with tape (maybe 2″-3″ wide) and then as you spray between these lines of tape just move some card along with you to protect the tarmac either side of where your spraying – it’ll be fine.

Be warned – to cover rough tarmac takes 2 or 4 or 5 passes sometimes, maybe 2 or 3 passes on smooth stuff. It’s this that uses up the tins. It’s only a very very rough guess but if I was doing lines between parking bays then I might get 3 full car-length lines per tin?…it doesn’t go that far?

The wheelie machine was ok – but gets gummed up a lot – I found tape and/or card guides a lot faster, easier and gave a far better ‘edge’ to the work too!…no cleaning, just dispose of them. Don’t forget to advise the customer that, unlike road painting machines, the edge will be slightly ‘broken’ too but it’d look fine from a couple of feet away…

One other thing, the nozzles of these tins gum up quick too – some makes are supplied with a second free nozzle inside the lid for this reason….so, once you start using the can then carry on till it’s empty…

All said and done – I would certainly do the job – it’s a doddle, but pick a calm day, sweep the area well and I would be inclined to price it as ‘your time’ + materials + consumables (card/tape/etc) and warn them that the costs of the paint can be high!!!

Excuse the rambling on – hope it helps a little…

Your initial post seems spot on Phill…even the price I can’t argue with (too much 😉 ).

It makes no sense for the text to site across the panels as it does and if they try to tell you it was designed that way then tell them they should get rid of the designer!…drop the whole lot a few inches as others have said and bob’s ur’ uncle 😉

Should be pretty sweet then – just a few in-and-out gulleys and away!

can’t help with an exact calculation of the windload? 😕 bit too techy for me…but…

I was always told to bury one third of the post below ground leaving two-thirds above.

furthermore, a trick I’ve used over the years to strengthen posts was to take a large plastic funnel and, removing the post caps, fill the posts with fine sand. if you’ve ever tried to bend a pipe filled with something like sand you’ll appreciate it’s virtually impossible!

With posts filled in this way, damage from high winds or kids swingin on ’em is more likely to result in a gentle bending of the posts – not a catastrophic failure! – an important safety feature.

You can buy the sand in easy to carry bags from DIY sheds or builders yards.

    hope it helps.

P.S. don’t forget – only pour sand into posts already set into the ground…otherwise it’ll all come straight out the bottom! 😛 [raspberry] 😉 😆 😆 😆

    …Lorraine,

though I don’t do much in Corex (fluted plastic board), when I need to fix other pieces to the main board I use the little white plastic nuts and bolts use to fix car number plates!

they’re available in white and yellow (obviously 😛 ) are easy to tighten by hand and, as they’re nylon, they don’t work loose either…

from memory I pay about 50p per set? (1 nut and 1 bolt)…

    hope that helps

    welcome John – welcome indeed…

if there’s one thing this site has plenty of – it’s folks of different disciplines! Vinyl, digital, airbrush, brush, screen, engraving, gilding – you name it, we have it here at UKSG!

…though many of us create signs in only one or two formats, we’re always very interested to read and learn about all aspects of signmaking, and it doesn’t matter how long the person making the post has been in the trade either…young or old, novice or expert – all are equally welcome and invited to join in.

    Thanks for joining in…enjoy! 😉

Tim…not my field this (though I’ve done a few painted curtains with the help of a signwriter friend of mine over the years)…but if memory serves, Gray in Tasmania said recently that with the modern curtain sider vinyls you can’t overlay them at all! – so if there are multicolour elements to the design then these parts may have to be welded back from each other a few mm’s and applied like ‘crazy-paving’?

On the curtains we did – for the small text we used a computer mask straight onto the curtains and painted in the solution (keeps curtainsider paints and thinners) and for the larger we pounced in the traditional way and handpainted – my mate did the edge work and I filled in behind. The only thing to watch was that it dries very quickly and you can not work the paint it has to go on in virtually two strokes. Some of the inks/paints are a little translucent too – so may need more than one coat…you have to wait for the first to completely dry or the solvents re-dissolve the first coat – maybe 4-6 hours (guessing, can’t remember).

Can I suggest you buy a cheap banner first and try a miniature of the design on it – in that way you can give the customer a sample to see whilst you get to try out the process…

P.S. I have used both vinyls and paint of curtains and the paint/ink method is (IMHO) far superior. The curtains I did are 3-4 years old now and, though scared form trees and bushes, look great! – There is no peeling, fade or feathering and evdn where they are scared the decoration has not shown through – it’s as if this stuff really does ‘eat-in’ to the curtain and become one with the surface…

    cheers!

    Kev…theres’ an old saying:

“fool me once – shame on you, fool me twice shame on me!”

…so don’t let anyone fool you twice eh! 😉

I’m on your side – £100 isn’t gunna break the bank – so long as it’s a ‘one-off’ So, may I dare to suggest taking a different course of action and rather than waste more money chasing after something you seem unlikely to get 🙁 put your time and energy into making sure it doesn’t happen again 😎 .

How about asking for payment with order on all items under £100 and maybe a 50% deposit on those over this amount – and then only start the work when the cheque has cleared. I know the last thing you need at a time like this is ‘nagging’ but I’m just saying what I believe to be the best course of action…sorry 🙁

Anyway – you could always just stick £5 onto the next twenty orders to cover it!…after all – that’s how the high-street stores compensate for shoplifters! 😛

    Just a thought Gav…

As you’re new to the trade, make sure you contact the two main trade magazines here in the UK – namely ‘Sign Directions’ and ‘SignUpdate’ – to ask them to put you on their mailing lists…it’s FREE 😆

This isn’t to say you shouldn’t ask here, it’s very important that you do. Others then get a real feel of products and suppliers from the replies…

…it just occured to me that, being new to the trade, you may not be getting the mags mentioned – that’s all! 😉

    Nice work Gav! 😉

This design is ‘different’ – but in a good way! That is, it’s maybe not what you’d expect outside a vehicle repair shop where the signage is often somewhat masculin, aggresive and angular. This design offers a softer approach and in doing so offers something rewarding and almost ‘decorative’ to look at.

I agree with the comments from others above and am pleased to see you’ve re-jigged it accordingly – it’s better still.

A couple of things that came to mind on looking at it for a few moments – I’d still have liked to see the two main elements at the top of the design ‘belong’ to each other a little more as they both need each other to create a meaningful title. So in addition to bringin them closer together, I’ve added a couple of pin lines to tie them in even more.

Finally, I’d have liked to see more space around the margin of the sign so I reduced the content of the sign by about 10% to leave more blue around it. I couldn’t be sure whether the white edge around your design was meant to be part of the sign or just the background. Signs that are colourful, vibrant and energetic sometimes benefit from a strong cleanly defined edge such as the wide white margin shown below?

Good idea to change the font for Kemnay though I’m not sure about allowing the lower case text to share a common top-edge with the capital ‘K’? I think I would keep the latter a little dominant perhaps by raising it or by reducing and lowering the rest – or summut…not sure?

Although you’re still quite new to all this, it should be said that, compared to some of your earliest works, this latest design definately shows the beginnings of an understanding of order, weight and composition and a willingness to experimant with style and colour…keep at it! 😉

were the visible allen screws part of the ‘look’ of the sign? did you need them to be easily accessible for maintenance? Would there have been another way to invisibly fix the panel? I just ask because the rest of the sign has such a ‘clean’ and uninterrupted ‘look’ to it…
