Richard, what vinyl did you use for this job? I’m not trying to be rude but £35 for materials seems a little steep. If all the colours are the full size of the logo and at the full height which I doubt then you would only have used about 15 metres of vinyl and 15 metres of application tape. Based on a 610mm vinyl width.
Bob how did you work out a price ? Did you do it based on time and materials or do you have a price list for this sort of thing?

actually i would like a bit of advice on prices aswell. I have just completed some signboards for a family member who has his own well established company. they are all on 3mm yellow foamPVC and consist of:
    1 – 4ft x 3ft in 3 colours
    3 – 1.5ft x 1ft in 3 colours
    3 – 1.5ft x 1ft in 2 colours

i had to design from scratch.
although he is my sisters husband, he said to charge him the going rate.
have used approx. 9M of 610mm vinyl.
i feel like i should be doing it for free, but business is business.
    any ideas? 😮

I dont seem to be very good at pricing Tony so I will decline from giving you a price but I feel that you should at least be covering your material costs even if you dont feel you should be charging him.
What is it your brother in law does ? if he has a well established company maybe there is someway he could help you in return for the signs instead of paying you cash.

well ,he actually owns a sheet metal company and can make anything in metal. He has wire benders and laser cutters etc.. He does make some products for sign companies now and then. My other sisters husband owns a large powder coating Company which is handy. Even more handy is that we are all under one enormous roof.

Tony…it’s always easier if you can post a piccie of the design/sign in question – cus there are so many variables…but…

A 4′ x 3′ in three colours using yellow board, maybe £150-£200? and each of the other two maybe £45-£65…it’s very hard to say. Are they fitted?, how long did it take to design? etc. 😕

Anyway – hope that helps – and maybe others will chip in…but post an image if you want.

    more soon

martin in reply to cost of materials
    i thought 35 was ok
i cut all logos from 610 vinyl which left me with some waste
so 15 meters of vinly around 21.00 which i chage the customer retail plus application tape lets call that 3.00 so it cost me 24.00
i have a car body repair shop and if we buy a door for £200.00 that price is trade we then charge the customer retail is this not how it works in the sign game

Sorry Richard I got a bit confussed ( not hard for me), I thought you were saying that the cost to you was £35 for materials. Thats what I thought was steep.

    Hi Martin

You asked how to I get to the price.

I work on the rough guide for 610 vinyl cut weeded and aplication paper of £20 per a linear meter and round up to nearest £5 for simple graphics. design work at 25 an hour
Travel 15 a hour + fuel Fitting £25 an hour Answering your Questions Free 😆

materials Work out the sq meterage or inches and apply some of the following markups

foam board 100% perspex 55% Illuminated signboxes 65% ally trim 55%

Ally metal signs and posts (Road Signs) 155 % How much he says? Seen how much it costs for your personal liability insurance to do Road signs (every thing can be reated to cost)

So there you have a few ways of working out a price lads, obviously you can apply other factors like market forces (look at all the foam that fell of the back of that lorry)
Or but the bloke down the road only charges…… or im in the sticks your in the city….Thats up to you but the formulas above put you in the ball park of what you should charge before you discount or load a qoute.

One for phil I think as he puts things more eleqent than what I doesfor the new boys.

Question: Whats the Difference Qoute or an Estimate..?

    Cheers for now….FB
