  • van reps and valet guys.. i hate them!

I was in a van sales centre today. We had seven Citroen berlingos to do between myself and another fitter.
Fair amount of stuff on them and all to be done that day. I reckoned it could be done easily if we kept a good pace and kept our heads down..

Arrived at the job and into reception. Told them who we are and could we get access to the vehicles.
Yep 2 tics they said. Back she comes. Sales reps off today but here are the keys. She hands us 7 sets of keys with paper key rings. On them scribbles of the reg plates.
I started to complain I was there to fit nothing more. I got the oh Im sorry speak to Steve when he gets back Friday. Great help.
Out I go to the yard to find the magnificent 7…. Oh there you are guys! Looking into a sea of vans right in the middle were the 7 with roof racks. The same 7 I needed out!
Back in I go. Sniffing with the cold and coughing.
Cutting it short, i’m back outside with more keys… so I start pulling one out one in…
On pulling the first one out between about 10 cars. An idiot car valet roared bye the gap I was pulling out into and almost hit me. He was only driving about 30 yards from A to B. yet at about 30mph in amongst loads of vans.
I jumped out and “being nice and polite at that time in the morning” I told him what I thought of him.
Then out comes another sales rep. told him the same thing and then said f*** it, sort it out or ill call the customer and tell them what I, “the sign guy” is trying to do for the garage after being paid around £40000.00 for their vans.
And almost being rammed by there staff into the bargain…
20 mins I come back after some hot tea. And all is in place. Job done by 5.30 and home for 6pm

My question is. Do you guys get the same thing going on in garages? Wars between the valet guys and the sales reps.. Normally I just tell them straight. Sort it before I get out my van or i’m off to another job. But in this case, I have a great customer who order 17 vans. This the first 7. Good payer and repeat business. I don’t want to go back and complain. I can’t complain to the rep because he is not there till next day. And everyone else doesn’t want the headache… arrgghh…

ok now i got that off my chest im away for some lemsip! 😉

    HI Rob

Yea exactly the same down here

now I just walk in and ask if the vehicles are inside and have they been valeted if the answer is no. I ask who is the person responsible can I have all the details and which department do they want the bill sent to for the time I have to wait for them to achive this( that usually gets a result ) if they start bickering I tell them that they will both have to pay.

When told to move the cars I just politly tell them that the insurance we hold only covers damage from signwriting and we arent covered to drive them. failing that walk out and when your customer wants to know whats wrong tell him. and ask could the garage please deliver them to your premises in the future to avoid a repition of the problem.

    Worked for me

I always ask for the vans to be brought to my premises to have the signs fitted. Often the customer tells me he doesn’t want the vans driven on the roads until the signs are fitted (cos they’ll get dirty) – I tell them not to worry we will wipe down any panels before we fit signs anyway. 😉

I always stress that they will get a better job done on their vans this way. We can bring the van(s) undercover to fit the signs so we are not fighting weather conditions and because we have our equipment available at our own premises we can make any small adjustments to sizes etc. there and then and renew any mistakes as we go along.

Often the customer will agree to take delivery then send vans to us for fitting when he thinks he will get a better job done. Occasionaly of course it is not possible to bring vehicles to my premises so the work has to be done at a dealership, in which case if they’re not accessible or already dewaxed, I am inclined to walk away from the job and explain to the customer about any problems. Don’t allow the garages to pass their problems on to you. If they haven’t got their act together and aren’t able to provide decent facilities and prepared vans, make it clear that it’s their problem and as Rob said – move onto the next job meanwhile.

I would have mentioned it to the customer Robert, after all its not your fault so the customer is hardly likely to blame you. If he is buying 17 vans from this dealership then they will want to keep him happy after all its only a matter of time before he buys new vans again.
If it had all been arranged for you to go in any graphic the vans then everything should have been ready for you prior to the sales guy taking the day off. I have been left hanging around at dealerships despite phoning in advance to confirm everything. I had always thought it was because it was only one van we were doing then the dealership wasn’t to concerned and had thought to myself wouldn’t it be great to doing a number of vans so they would get their act together, guess I was wrong !!

yep you would think so.. but no, no preperation from any of them regardless to amount. what i do know and maybe a bit of the reason.
our customer had just been in the day before to pay for the lot!

no wonder the rep had the day off…

at chrismas we did the same sort of thing in another garage. this time 11 vans.
same story and it was a female rep. gave me all kinds of bother.. bother i walked away from and called the customer.. 3 days later all was done.. i learned from the customer on the last day she said.. sorry about the time they took. if you would have used the sign makers i recommended im sure this would have been much quicker… makes you wonder eh?
if we give the rep a bung, we get indoors in the heat. if we dont, we are left driving round the yard sreaming at the valet guys…

Ooooh my pet hate, car salesmen, too a man (or woman) they are the scum of the earth pompous, opinionated, self serving, weasily, slimy tosspots, the lot of them, had a job for the local ford dealer whined and moaned about wanting a job done, in the end did on a sunday to help them out it then took them 5 MONTHS to pay me £90, never again when they then rang me a few months later for a similar crappy job i told them OK but I get paid the moments the jobs done “Err our standard terms are 90 days” through clenched teeth I gave them the phone number of a competitor and said maybe they would like to “**** him about instead of me”
Then there was local Landrover dealer, complaining because I had quoted £200 to letter 3 Discos to be used as courtesy cars, all the while leaning on a Range Rover costing £45,000 which I pointed out was £8000 more than I had paid for my house :x.
I still find it hard biting my tongue at some of the rubbish that these *ankers come out with.
    Ah that feels better nothing like a friday rant 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀

i went to a garage to quote for signing a Mitsu Shogun, it was covered in ice and snow, i said i could do it the next day, when i turned up the day after they hadnt put it inside like they said they would and it was still covered, the girl at reception said that she could find a scraper for me!! to which i laughted and went home, called the rep on his mobile and told him that when it was clean and dry i would come back!!

bunch of morons if you ask me!!

If you want to click and be on the same wavelength as a car salesman, explain to him that “fitting signs on a car is like making love to a beautiful woman…..you have to mould the vinyl to every curve…… stand back and admire the shape….” 😕 😳
