Hello from Nottingham
Posted by George Pucurull on August 23, 2010 at 1:52 pmHello I’m new to the world of Sign Making and have recently bought an Epson 9800 printer. I’m toying with the idea of buying rolls of self adhesive printable vinyl and mounting it on Correx or foamboard.
I’d welcome any advice as this is all new to me.

George, this isn’t meant to be really negative but before I started typing I just knew it would sound that way.
Read your other post about lamination and now wonder what research you did before deciding to part with the cash to buy the printer.
Did you buy the printer to do something else and have now thought you may be able to use it for signmaking or did you buy it to make signs??What are you looking to do with it as far as sign manufacture goes and where do you intend selling the signs you make?? What sort of local competition do you have if you are going to sell locally and what’s the competition if you are selling some other way??
Seriously you can buy an epson 9800 for around the £1000 mark, probably cheaper if you looked about and did a bit of haggling which isn’t really a substantial investment in terms of starting a business. Not trying to put anyone off or saying it can’t be done because I know it can but if it really were that easy everyone would have their own business raking in loads of money !!!!
Quite happy to help people on the forum but would be nice to know a bit about how you decided to do this and what you are looking to achieve in terms of your market.

Hi Martin, I use my printer mainly for stretched canvases, repro vintage ad posters and special offer window displays for small shops. I started off with an A2 Epson 3000 and used the profits to buy the 9800 which was considerably more than £1000 but it does have a service contract with it. It’s not my only source of income and I’m not attempting to compete with large established sign firms. I’d like to have my finger in as many pies as possible to ride out this recession.
A friend of mine wants a rigid 10′ x 2′ sign for the top of his catering trailer. I was simply looking for advice on the best ways to tackle this individual job with the equipment I have.
I’ve had my own business for the past four years and I’m more interested in being master of my own destiny than "raking in loads of money." It’s been a real struggle but I much prefer it to working alongside people I don’t get on with.
I’d appreciate any suggestions as to what I "can" use my 9800 for.
