  • Question about the edging on aluminium composite signs

Posted by Liam Pattison on August 23, 2010 at 9:02 pm

    Hi there

I have been doing a search on the boards as i remember seeing it mentioned, i am looking for some info on the edging which is sometimes used to finish off ali composite boards.

I have not used this edging before and have just left the edges cut. But this time i’d like to have a better finish as i’m thinking of making a way finding/directory board using dibond or similar.

Can anyone advise me on it, or share a picture of a board which has the edging in place?

    Thanks in advance

    Liam

I like the frame Graham, thanks for posting, but i was looking for an edging type material just to finish the edges.

Matty, what is the ‘ACM’ sorry for my ignorance on this!

    Cheers

Oh yeah, i should have been able to work that out really 😳

Thanks Martin and Graham, there is some good stuff there, i was hoping for a very discreet almost tape like material, i’m always looking for something which doesn’t exist.

I’m not convinced i can make a ‘ACM’ panel look that great as a directory system, as i originally thought i could, so my search has lead me to find this system which i like-

i do not want to go down the ‘slatz’ route any other ideas would be welcome, or thoughts on the system i posted, it’s for exterior use on an office complex building.

    thanks

I thought you might be referring to that U-channel plastic edge molding.
I put it on most of my Alumalite signs, it’s easy to cut with a Stanley knife and just slides right over the edges of the material.

    Jill,

thanks for that, that may be what i’m after, is there any chance you could show me a picture of the edging of one of your signs or a corner to see how it comes out please? If you are too busy, no worries!

    Thanks again

Try SMP they have a good range of aluminium extrusions.

I’ve used the edge trim from Jag and while the plastic extrusion is OK the glue they come with doesn’t stay stuck so I’ve stopped using it.

I also tried removing the glue strip and using my own but it’s more hassle than it’s worth, I did tell them as well so maybe they have done something about it by now.

Other than that when you find something let me know

Liam these are the tools I use (snap off Xacto knife)
    adhesive and my hands.
You can heat and bend this stuff too but I never tried it.
You can cut the edges to 45° at the corners.
The black stuff is the edge cap from Alumalite.
The white stuff is the edge cap I get via my supplier N Glantz and son.
I prefer using it, as it’s a deeper channel.
But it only comes in black and white.
The Laminators Inc. edge cap comes in colors to match their Alumalite.
If I can use this stuff even a chimp could do it.

Thanks Steve and Stephen for the info, all the sites people have shown me, i have found other good stuff there as well, so thanks.

Jill thanks very much for the tutorial and pics, that’s exactly the help i was after. Just wanted to make sure i had it right in my head how the edging worked and looked, may seem simple to some, but just wanted to double check it!

thanks for taking the time to upload the pics,

    Liam

    Hi All,

Would be interested to know if you thought white ACM with a white core would be popular? given the request for a nicer edge would be interested to know what you think ?

    Regards

I think it would look a lot better Cameron.

Mind you, given that the edges of the Aluminium faces are silver – could the core colour also be made silver?

    Hi Phil,

Sorry Phil, its only an option to have a white core so was thinking it would only be worthwhile with white ACM as about 80% of sales are white, still be good to know what you think.

    Cheers

Phil is correct in that it would look better, but I’m really not sure that it is a necessary change, and if it were to add to the cost of purchase I would rather stay with what we have.

    My opinion of course.
