    Point taken Robert.
What is your address? Seems a nice place to open a new company. :lol1:

I understand perfectly your point of view, and probably I’d think the same way.

On my behalf I’ve to say that other personal circumstances apply (just got off an 11 year relationship), by that i mean: I probably have less problems finding a job than the majority of people, but all circumstances balanced at 33y like I’m, this is a route that I’d like to check. I will be looking for a restart in life,as i think i speak a reasonable English, UK seems like a good option.
Of course that in that calculation i also consider that working for someone else here means that at maximum I’ll get between 3.63£ / 5.18£ hourly rate while I’d expect a bit more if working in your country.
By the way can someone tell me the hourly wage paid there in this business, even if not accurate, just to get an idea?

Thank you for your opinion at least i learned that i shouldn’t tell my future next boss everything that I’ve done before. 😉

    Thank You Neil & Linn.

@ Linn – I’m having trouble finding the proper words to research for jobs and websites in UK, in this trade.
If it were you which would be your first website to advertise for a job?

Hi Again! 😀 . I’ve been away from the boards for a long time although once in a while i always kept checking it.

I’m very happy because I’ve been reading the boards again and i still can find some very familiar faces.

I’ve been working in Digital Print, Vinyl Cutting and application, Design, Laser Engraving, etc for the last 11 years, including the last 5 with my own company, but after a big set back last year (fire in my shop, and a bad insurance company), things just got too complicated, and i can’t keep it no more. 😥
In my country and business area things are very complicated (lots of companies closing, FMI banging @ our door, etc), soo i decided to try a different approach and work abroad if i can find a decent job, as this is what I really love to do.

This time I’m here to require some help and guidance on where to look for employment abroad, my main will would be UK but I’d be grateful if i can find something that suits me elsewhere.

My request to you all goes in finding the best sites to look for jobs, send CV’s, etc in sign making industry, because all the other job sites are to extensive and they do not seem to know this industry at all, or maybe I’m approaching them the wrong way (how should i research better for jobs in this industry?)

Thank you all for reading, and of course thanks in advance to any help i can get.

July 17, 2006 at 11:23 am in reply to: where do i start with trimming prints to fit panels?
    quote Peter Normington:

The other way is to make a paper template and trim the print on the bench.

This is your best advice, recently i had a few metal sprayed panels inside a shop and my main problem was to ruin them, i used a similar method for what Peter described, only i used tranfer Paper tape, if you’re very carefull in the beginning there won’t be any stretch from the paper and as much as you use it it’ll become easier to move from one cut to the other (get’s low tack,…does the expression exists??) altough i don’ t think you’ll have this option in a one off Transit. But you can apply and peel from your bench 2 or 3 times soo it doesn’t get too much tacky before applying in the van to draw?

Get the low tack by applying it to a substrate before apply in the van.!

1- Apply the Tranfer Paper in the Van
2- Draw with a pencil the curve needed
3- Peel carefully (soo it doesn’t stretch)
    4- Apply over the print
    5- Trim
6- Peel the template off the Print
    7- Apply Print to van.

Anyway it’s always better if you ruin the Digi but not the Van, instead of both??

    😉

Probably you dragged it to a place where you can’t see it but the program assumes it as being visible.

Either Reset all Settings from Corel using F8 as Jill said or try this 1st:

Tools / Customization / Command Bars or Toolbars i’m not sure then choose your desired toolbar and choose to reset it.

    Hope you sort it out.

We got to be honest, it’s not a van, it’s not a fancy restaurant, it’s a candy shop we’re kids atracted by powerful colors, shinny pictures, etc should drag their mothers into, then they’ll leave with that sense of guilty … Mothers gaining weight … you get the picture … Job done.

June 8, 2006 at 2:51 pm in reply to: looking for laser engraving onto rubber stamps?
    quote Rodney Gold:

Perhaps things are different where you are in terms of profitability.

I can’t know for sure how are things in UK, but at least here i think rubber stamps are hugely overpriced, (which i don’t regret) :lol1:
i started to only answer to customer requests without any AD or stamp shown in the shop, but shortly found that i could make a lot of money with each rubber sheet. Yes it’s a bit messy(not that much if you use air assist (fullpower and full extraction), yes you have to clean the laser parts after each job complete ( i always engrave a few at a time),

i made an arrangement with a few stationery/bookstores around here, and the end of each day i’ll engrave their rubber’s then clean machine to start with clean machine in next morning.
I wouldn’t buy a laser only for doing stamps, there are loads of other less expensive machines to do that but i already had purchased and this way i’m actually just filling the space that regular engraving doesn’t fill, and making money from that otherwise empty times. I’ve given this a bit of thought and for a small shop that doesn’t have all the time fullfilled for engraving like probably Rod’s company, yes it is a very nice(profitable) way of filling that time, if i get enough engraving to other materials then maybe instead of buying another expensive laser, then i might think in buying another machine for stamps and unload the laser for those jobs.

P.S. I buy my rubber sheets from Local Trodat Suplier

As Chris said if it’s a really race car then you’re in a all diferent market then street cars, we’ve done quite a few rally cars this last months and unless it’s an official car drivers/owners won’t want more then the strictly necessary about the manufacturer usually just the car body :D, they will prefer to shown their sponsors, hopefully the car we’ll get them noticed and then next race they can charge/ask more money for the sponsorship.

About the design itself i’d stick with the moto "K.I.S.S.", maybe loose completely the subaru logo, make the sponsors name much bigger and maybe use it on the top of the checkers.

I tought i’d update this thread, just to confirm that i’ve placed the order, and received the products today from http://www.kydproducts.co.uk/

Everything, runned smoothly, good service, the products were as expected, only downside were the fees i paid here in Portugal to make the bank transfer in Sterling Pounds, because they didn’t have an online payment system, nor we agreed other payment terms. We’ve talked about it and probably we’ll find another way around in next order.

The Comercial Manager, Mr. Keri Healey, was very helpfull, called me today (International Call) just to check i received the product, 😮 if anyone needs to deal with them he’s the one to be called.

A tip for the laser engraver’s owner’s, with this products (Magnetic Badges or pin clips) and a simple sheet of Rowmark silver, gold, red or whatever, you can make a personalized cut to shape name badge in about 1 to 2 minutes, at least here in Portugal i found a nice market for this kind of service.

    Thx for all your answers.

Andrew, thank you very much for the clarification, that was exactly the kind of trouble i was trying to avoid, and altought i couldn’t guess if it had the same kind of moral "stress" that it had in Portuguese, i knew that at least here specialy the disabled associations do prefer words like inabilited, disfuncional etc, not that i really think there is any diference, in fact i do prefer to call the "bull" by the name then goin around to say same something with the exact same meaning or at least very similar. Hope i made sense. 😳

Edit: In the next ones i’ll have this info to consider, coz in fact i delivered the signs yesterday afternoon and as i didn’t knew this before, i didn’t toke any chances so i followed Shane’s tip and used only the wheelchair. I wanted this to be very good as it’s an old and very good customer, my first job for him was in fact my first graphic job (while employee in another company), since that day he followed me trough 3 diferent companies and 1st day i established as selfemployed he came in just to greet me for my new venture and assure me that whenever he needed something he would ask me first then anyone else.

I Know what you mean, but it’ll have a WC sign in the entrance door and then one in each inside door to separate gents from ladies etc

I just didn’t want to upset anyone writing only disabled in the sign if that can be ofensive in any form.

I would suggest something like Andrew showed but i’d try to keep original (Blue and Orange colors), and about the C as said already i would try to darken (Royal Blue seems good) it a bit to run away from quicktime tought and would try only 1 big C like Shane and Jill jut said, i would like to see those C’s in Orange aswell but maybe that’s to agressive,Mainly it seems i toke a piece of each and everyone’s idea. 😳

Once again, i won’t be much help Martin :lol1:
i’m yet to try any engraving package but i’ve achieved amazing results with Photoshop, CorelDraw and CorelPaint, preparation it’s only 50% of the job the other 50% are on Speed vs Power, in fact i think that the packages will only handle images in a set of actions pre-established and you only have to tell the software what kind of image it’s your input and required output, similar thing you can do yourself with Photoshop actions. I didn’t said it’s easier, only it’s cheaper but requires a lot of patience and correct knowledge of picture edition.

    About heated parts:

As i’m building a 90 cms only i’ll be using 2 polished granite plates (it’ll be sitting in a bench soo weight isn’t problem) made by a friend and using an aluminium rail in between them (couldn’t found a ceramic one so thin as 8 mm) any way i’ll be using ceramic washers to space aluminium from bottom parts.

As i haven’t assembled the parts i already have, and altought i’m building a simple line bender for light use, i would like to see more solutions either to prevent mistakes and even for future reference. 😉

    Thx

UK units tend to use nichrome wire heating elements which I like better. US units tend to use calrods.

I’ve been told soo, that’s why i’m building a nichrome unit, mainly coz of iomic resistance (not sure if proper term in English), but that also brings a small problem the nichrome resistance is very small soo in order to make a safe machine you’ll need to reduce tension to 12V/24V or at least 48V minimum, and that’s why i asked for a transformer made exactly to my specs (a bit more expensive then standart ones).

Martin, I’d say you to check this nichrome versus calrods issue prior to purchase your bender.

I’m the proud owner of a laser engraver aswell.
This might not help you, things maybe a bit diferent over there but i found the acrilic benders available here a bit expensive for the dimensions they had and for what they really are in fact it’s only a resistance. Soo i decided to build one (90 cms), just waiting for the arrival of a proper transformer made by order to assemble everything. 😉

I would be interested in see the prices in UK anyway to see if it was cheaper there. If you have any info or links i would be glad to check them. Thx.

I couldn’t help you this time, but in my short experience with lasers if you find anyway i can help you, just shout. 😉

By the way, wich laser have you purchased?

    Cheers

I’ve used Norton, Panda, and McAfee all registered versions and from time to time i’d still get that odd virus or Spyware,Adware or Malware.

Recently changed to AVG and Sygate Firewall and 99% of my problems were gone at that moment, i still run HitmanPro (free spyware, etc it’s a bundle that runs a few diferent programs based on free antispyware or trial versions completely automated) at least once a week but it hardly finds something, besides cookies.

Great improvement in readability !! (does the word exists 😳 )

I love the new bevel efect, altought the “flares” aren’t properly set acording to the source of light (as Ramj said), i think you should find a proper spot acording to it or change the bevel to match.
Maybe a small shadow behind the number only reflected in the top of the rip would look good too (more tridimensional), i’d try the numbers slightly bigger also. Left hand does look weird tough. Have you tried another color for the nails? (maybe Red or Strong Orange)
As if you hadn’t already doubts about the design, now i’m confusing you even more. :lol1:

I’d love to drive one of those cars too. I’m jealous now!

Enough said, maybe too much dunno!! 😕

    Looks nice soo far.

Constr. Crit.: I wouldn´t cover the top of the numbers with the bits of the scratch, instead i would try to give it a more tridimensional effect by making them stand off trough the panel, like if they we’re lifted in the top from behind, i’m not ken on the purple aswell, but if you have other bits with purple then it should make sense to you.
another thing i would change is the hands, i’ll loose them at all (too much fullfilled) or at least i’d try to break that tendency by changing nails color or something.

Hope, it didn’t look to confuse, … in fact it confused me a lot re-reading it 😕

    Sry for the english 😳

    Hope i helped anyway.

Thx 4 the kind words Nick & Cheryl.

I’m not into the black outlines, i think you have enough contrast already between black and red but i would like to see those outlines with the chrome or cream aswell, being the letters black or even red of course.

I would like to have a play tonight with the rear of the car, if you want me too but i don’t have an AI file for that.

    Just a quick one.
    2 colour based.
Maybe being the light grey=silver or even chrome?? I tried cream and liked it too!
I didn’t go for other strong color like yellow or white, etc coz’ i think red already as enough “power” if you no what i mean?
In fact i think Silver/Chrome or Cream would give the red a sober but hi-class look, or maybe i’m just to tired already 😀

Got to agree with you Peter, maybe they are a bit to much, mine was done in 15 minutes counting with the image cutting. Surely needs more time to choose pictures better cuts, diferent fonts, probably it would come totally diferent if i had the time. I do like Jill’s for it’s simplicity.

Hi Stephen, i’m glad you liked the concept.

On your design, i would also loose the word “from”, and would try to findsome more negative/free space between phrases; i don’t like the 2 two logos either (maybe you can find loosing one of them the extra space to take “from classic …” from the top of the pictures?).

Last advice: then i’ll get my coat 😀
In both above designs mine in Jill’s, they both got a warm image with wood burning clearly, yours just show the fire and in my opinion a bit to much stronger.

Hope this makes any sense to you, good luck.

Thx Rod, i’m unhappy coz sometimes i got a sort of fuzzy, engraving but i’ve tried a lot on auto and manual focus and i couldn’t achieve the result i wanted, best result i’ve achieved was with one pass just kiss cut mostly to even surface of thermark, and then 25% power (30 watt machine), that’s why i asked advice on the percents and application of product, i think maybe the major problem comes from there.

Hi Mark, thx for the reply,
I’ll check tomorrow if i can find isopropyl nearby tomorrow to dilute it and see how it goes, my problem is that i dunno the ideal consistency that the product should have, honestly i dunno how someone can tell me that in words and i didn’t want to be playing with that without any clues, i don’t have anyone with a laser for reference near me.

    About the 1st machine,
I don’t have any answer about that altought i’d like to know aswell, the supplier is still struggling between 2 diferent offices to see who is going to be held responsible for the laser tube they ordered thinking it was the problem. (chat.) When/if i got an answer i’ll post it.

    Thx again

Got my Thermark product this morning!

I wasn’t sure about making a new topic or continue this one but maybe it’s wise to keep everything together for future reference, maybe someone will have same doubts i have now.

    My questions are:

    – either using water or isopropyl alcool wich one it’s the best container for the washed solution, and how you make to reconstitute the paste for using it again?

    – i’ve tried the paste just as it comes but i couldn’t achieve yet the ideal quantity of it in the material, (altought using a fine brush to apply) so far i found that there was to much or to less paste there, how you know the ideal amount? (A picture of some material aplied before marking would be great, if that’s not asking too much).

    quote Rodney Gold:

get the paste and thin it with isopropyl alcohol and use a fine brush to apply.

Percent?, remaining space of the can? before or only when applying?

Edit: Re-reading all the questions they all seem pretty basic, but i prefer to make them before continuing experiences with my 193.60€/200 grs. of thermark (includ VAT), 😮

    Thx again for your help

I’ll try to order some product on Monday morning, just to answer some minor orders i keep geeting almost on a daily basis now, and give it a try.

Have you tried the spray version? I’ve checked some websites that announce a spray version of Cermark. Is it worthy? (Sounds easier to apply)

I’ve read somewhere as well that CeramicMark could engrave on Metals, Glass, ceramics, etc; but on Metalmark it only refers Metals should i buy Ceramic instead of MetalMark? I wanted to buy the most versatil product this way i could try a lot of diferent things before goin to buy a whole range of products.

On ceramicmark i’ve found some colored products (black, bronze, blue etc), have you tried them? If the answer is yes what’s your opinion about them.

    Hi Lorraine

As said before i think you should check 1st if there is any issue with software related staff before going for the hardware investment.

I don’t use signlab, but recently i bought a brand new computer to operate my laser engraver, 3.4 Ghz, 1 GB memory, bla bla bla, and i had a similar problem with CorelDraw when converting outlines to objects it just frozes.
Tried everything said here before, new memory sticks, diferent GFX, reformat HD, etc… just to find that it was the motherboard firmware that needed an update, altough it could be very frustating you should, in a trial and error basis try to eliminate ALL software related probs before upgrading anything.

I’m asking this coz’, i didn’t soo till the major problems come to my machine i tought everything was ok with it, but now only a few days after receiving this new one, i can assure that the previous one had low power problems since day one, but as i didn’t had any experience except from seeing it working in someone else’s hands, i couldn’t imagine how faulty mine was.

Hi Russel, well mine was under the warranty (2 years warranty).

I was assuming all Europe had 2 year compulsory warranty in electronical equipments, but maybe up there it’s diferent, maybe someone can check it for you.

I can assure you that i can make a lot of noise 😀 when some1 ****** me off, so i think that’s the main reason why they decided to bring a new machine instead of replacing one part after another till they have the problem solved. (chat.) :nag4: :nag4: :nag4: :nag4:

Just another point is they did wanted to take the machine to their office to try to solve the problem, but that wasn’t an option at the moment coz i really needed it, even if it wasn’t on full capabilities, soo they just got tired of traveling too, i think.

If it was me i’d ask them to try and make some diferent holder for that part, but if not possible that’s not a beauty/fashion machine, soo the important is that it is working fine.

    Rod,
the machine’s running over an industrial power supply, we have in the same space something like, 1 DGI 2.50 mtrs digital printer, 1 mutoh 1.60 digital printer, 3 canon color laser printers (CLC3200, 2xCLC1130), 1 Canon Black Laser Printer (IR5000),laminators, vinil cutters, 6 PC’s and several other machine’s, none of them had any problem during this time, soo i’m not pointing to that direction at this time.

About the warrantee, yes it is still in warrantee, but i’ve only paid till this moment about 75% of the machine and the supplier,is willing to swap this machine for a new one but only after the remaining payment is done, i’m struggling with myself about that, because i haven’t been served fully yet soo i’m feeling like i’m making a pre-paid buy. (Is it possible that i’m seeing this the wrong way?). I’m feeling like they are completely blind about this problem and really just want to change the machine to solve it or they just want to get paid and after that i’ll probably wait for a long time till i get my problem solved if i get it solved

Mark, as i said to Dave before all aproaches are valuable at this time.
Yes, lens and all other components “user friendly” components are cleaned, even if they haven’t been used we have kind of a rule about regular maintenance in all our machines.

Thx for all comments, all of them serve to eliminate possibilities and eventually help me to push a bit harder on the supplier.

    Regards
