Posted by Frog Man on March 11, 2006 at 12:57 pm

    Hi all,

Just got a rambling e-mail with the heading “PLEASE RESPOND” I think offering me $10,000,000 (nothing new there) but something I did notice was the number of e-mail addresses in the Cc: area that had the word signs in them and a lot with .uk.
Made me wonder if maybe the members addresses had been leaked somehow.

    Just Curious. 😕

In the last week I’ve won about 10 lotteries, inherited $10,000000 about 8 times and had Lebanese President’s wives asking me to launder money for them. Someone has recently got hold of a list of signmakers’ e-mail addresses, because I’ve heard others mention an influx of this stuff recently.

There was also that virus awhile back that kinda cloned and used the email addys in yer address book.
    Plain and simple:
If you don’t know the sender, just delete it unopened.

I don’t mind too much getting them, it was kinda funny at first. I just delete them.
I just thought Rob may have a security problem he might not be aware of as a lot of the addresses I can tie in with names and businesses I know from UKSB.

I received one today with Please Respond heading today too but just deleted it. My worry was that it went straight to my in box and not into junk.

thanks for the heads up mate, all details given when registering here are very secure, i am the “only” person with access to these details.
stuff like this happening in the past is the reason we do not have profile access on uksb.

Same ones As I have been getting, is it coincidence, or out of all the people on the boards a percentage will get the same junk?

I have a theory, but cant disclose it publicly, as it would be impossible to prove where the mailing list originated.

Mine only started in the last couple of weeks too.

Rob, is there a way I can send you a copy of the addresses that were on the Cc list so you can compare to what’s on your records ?
There are probably a hundred or so and as I said earlier they seem to tie in with a lot of people using UKSB.
Might not be anything to do with UKSB but if the list matches it could point to a security issue.

I’m off to sleep now but will check for a reply in the morning.

The way this has started out the blue, adding the (carbon copy) scenario, i am really starting to wonder. i could be wrong, but when have you ever had a virus/worm type email that sends the carbon copy list too? 😉

I also got a couple from HSBC last week, with subject title relating to “my account”. I don’t have an account though, so just deleted emails without reading them. Has anyone else received these?

Did you open them Peter? Did they have cc list?

yes Dawn I have, only in about the last 3 or 4 days though I’ve had the bank ones the lotto ones help me get zillons out of some far flung country, but I don’t think it’s only us on here, we have a local radio consumer programme and the amount of people who have phoned in this week with the same one’s is incredable, all our mail comes through a mail washer so nothing gets on the computor anyway, needless to say it all gets deleted.
i don’t know if is a virus or just people trying to get hapless peoples account details, cause most have these have aked for that. 🙄

I get junk but not won the lottery or seen anything like that.

My sign’s related email address in recent 3 months are getting spammed, not sure how or why though.

    Mine are:-

Doctor at The Ultimate Online Pharamceutical (this get everywhere)
and broken emails like “co mimit news” or “baptisma l news” from Saranna Koelling and Zinovia Goldsberry.

    Lynn Talbot Welcome tomatrix
mainly start off with 4 paragraphs with -Sensattional revolution in meedicine!

My other email non-sign related… gets about 50 a day and I am supposed to be spam filtered.

  • Robert Lambie

every email account gets spam, comes with the territory of the net.

viruses, worms, whatever… they exist and do the rounds from time to time….

what you dont get is a carbon copy email list with any of the above.

i maybe jumping to conclusions here…
but i think we maybe getting targeted! this happened in the past… so why not again?
the ones that come in with the CC emails are certainly targeted “in my view” but we can waite and see once i have a look at the list.

if that same person with the CC email list from uksb decided to copy and paste that same list to spamming type sites. in turn we all end up with the same junk, at the same time, causing us all grief.

those are just posibilities of course.

Yep I have been getting them since 3rd March, and they originate from a server called de.kunderserver (or something like that). Right click the email, go to properties and it will say where the email is coming from, interesting to see if they all come from there.

I’ve been getting the pharmacuitical ones for a while now. Also some that seem to somehow have read who I am and who I e-mail. In other words I get e-mails addressed to Simon or some other familiar name. Weird.

    Cheers.

I get them only on the e-mail address registered here. I also know that some former, or at least inactive, members have been getting them.

I did a yahoo search for my e-mail address and found one match which was a site called Hilton……something. Anyway, it was a page of text consisting of signmakers e-mail addresses. Weird.

I’ve been getting them too FM but only on my admin email account, not any others (I have 14 email addresses) or any other non sign related web sites (I have 4) so don’t know what to make of it.

Only started about a month ago.

Just checked that link Andy, my address is there too, and lots of others I recognise from here. Interestingly, one address I saw on there from a non active member I know, is not longer valid by a fair few months. Must be an old list but I think it is pretty well certain there has been a breach at sometime.

I am only on this site, and I did register with another, so it could be them I suppose, although I don’t think my non active member friend has joined the other one either.

Also, admin@uksignboards is there, and I’m not sure that rob would have joined the other site under that alias?

Edit: I have just remembered, the address listed on this site is one I have only just changed to a couple of months back. So that may narrow it down. Have not had any disgruntled staff leave just recently have you Rob? 😕

done a quick check after someone send me a pm regarding this. (thanks )
the list sent i “think” is a few hundred addresses… however, “most” dont match our email list, lots are bogus as we have run a check and the results are showing broken, bogus or no longer in use accounts. the only ones we can see to match are those that “i” recognise?
even at that some of those are very old ones, from people i havent seen on the site for ages. yet i spotted a few new ones too!
our email list consists of about 6000 names, so if security had been breached i would recon they would have taken the lot. my personal opinion here is that someone from the boards, past or present, has a fair amount our emails, combined with a lot of their own & has been submitted to a string of spamming sources.

i also have a few things i am in the process of following up, which could get me a result on this. ill keep you posted. 😀

by that you mean your email accounts mate. if you check email from any pc, you checking the same email account?

ive taken about 7 addresses now and added them to norton antispam and bt anti spam and it has stopped. (i hope) this being the case it maybe the same half dozen addresses or so sending the spam…
if someone like hotmail was sending the spam it continues regardless of which you block. it just shifts, same emails, different sender.

heres hoping it all stops soon, i keep getting my hopes up every time i win the lottery 😳 :lol1: :lol1:

Just wondering as some mentioned they continued to receive it trought the weekend but i didn’t, just wondering if there is any possibility that there are more of those lists?
