First of all, thx for your concern and time to help me out.

Rod, with your permission i’ll send your answer to the tech team, at least it will let them know that maybe i’m a bit more informed then my local tech team and i truly think they will be embarassed enough not to try asap to solve the problem.

Dave, all approaches are valuable at this time.

    your answers:
1 – Yes i can drive it manually, haven’t found any problem about it.
2 – ๐Ÿ˜ณ I couldn’t find your answer (but i’ll ask them tomorrow morning). Anyway in any case i’ve found any consistency on the problems, meaning always diferent spots in the “losses”, diferent files when scale related problems.
3 – In the cases of losses it is always, i compensate it on thinner materials reducing speed, but can’t do the same in thicker materials, speeds already near lowest limit, tryed multiple passes on several times, but for ex in white acrylic (8mm) today i needed 4 passes at minimum speed to completely cut 1 rectangle round corners with aprx 45×22 cm, it toke about 2.15H to cut it .
Scale and rotary problems this ones till now i found them completely random.
4 – Yes i found similar problems in wood and other materials.

Once again, thank you both of you, for trying to help me.

Anyone that as an opinion about this issue will be welcome. It’ll help me now or in the future and maybe someone experiencing something similar to any of this various problems.

    Best regards

As it seems nobody can say anything (even technicians) about this issue till now, i made a small list of what i’m experiencing in the hope i can get an answer or at least an opinion just to make my sleeping easier. :lol1:

    1. Drivers suddenly stop accepting more jobs
    Memory not full
    No problems with last job.
    Machine restarted to solve problem.

    2. Y Axis
Suddenly after a few jobs, same settings no changes made on options, only diferent job, the machine starts to do about half the size of it’s regular course in his Y axys, everything is fine with X axys but job comes half size on Y.
Restart of computer solves problem, aparently some problem with spooler or something.

    3. Decrease power
When doing medium/large simple jobs (squares, rectangles usually with round corners) after the first corner and after the laser reduces it’s power to compensate desaceleration (my guess) it won’t increase properly again. Seems like on first vector the power is consistent, and that after that is very inconsistent.
Could be problems with power supply or laser frequency range?
Any interferences could be causing this at motherboard level?

    4. 3D Feature
Not available, in version 1.47 or 1.49 (currently in use).

    5. Rotary
Happened a few times, the rotary assumes a +/- 10% larger course again on Y axys then the design itself. Solved by decreasing only in Y axis (in Corel) the size of the design.

Rod, i would like your opinion on this one no commitment to it tought ๐Ÿ˜‰
    Any inputs would be apreciated.

    Thx again Rod
As usual this men really knows is business, unvaluable to this forum and for me particularly.

I’ll try some of your solutions a.s.a.p.

Altough some of them i can’t try them before this particular job, they all seem very useful, and i’ll try them surely.
(The only problem is i have done a small research in Portuguese distributors for the small blaster and i couldn’t found one satisfactory yet, soo i might have to import it directly if i decide to go that way, and that means without having chance to try it before, but i’ll keep asking for it for a while before goin forward.)

In grafix industry this is a comon problem.

I agree with L.J., and i prefer to draw it in front of the customer, but before they seat next to me, i’ll show them the price list copy that is located near my monitor, i can assure you that they agree much faster with your sugestions. ๐Ÿ˜‰ That can make a customer (that 1 minute ago was clueless about the design he wanted) have clear ideias about what he want reaaaally fast!!!

If after he see’s the price list, he doesn’t want to sit next to you, and says well, i’ll be back later to see what you’ve done; STOP designing go next door to have a cup of coffee because that’s all you gonna loose with him, if you continue designing then maybe you can use that layout to a similar customer. ๐Ÿ˜‰

Of course the RIP would be the ideal for tiling but i have found (designer and aplicator perspective) that a in a variety of aplications you might need diferent bleed measures for each tile that’s the reason i started to do it in Corel coz it’s really easy to do. Another thing, often when i need something printed in tiles and give it to the printers they prefer for there own insurance that it would be already tiled.

    Regards

    Russell.

Sry fella but i have to disagree completely with you on this one, last week i designed one similar pop-up display 4×3, and the words you used were pretty much similar to the ones that the printer used right before i explained him one simple way to do that in Corel, is words after this were OMG could i be wronger about this? I’ve been working the wrong way for soo much time!!

I don’t have the time now but if needed i’ll explain that to you or you can e-mail me at britchenko at hotmail…com and i’ll explain it.

About the others programs i can say i use all except signlab and yes i’m a Corel supporter for a lot of aplications altough i don’t like Photopaint and i prefer to use Photoshop when dealing with pictures everything else goes to Corel when possible, if there was only CorelDraw, Photoshop and Indesign for large publications the world would be such a nice place!! ๐Ÿ˜€

I think that might be your’s or the printer’s biggest problem coz probably if it is a new design than 90% chances of the original artwork the customer as seen, was printed on an inkjet printer; if soo then you’re in trouble. :nag4:

Best way i think of getting an happy customer is to show him the printed version, show him the swatches of vinyl let him choose wich one of the closest ones he prefers. Write it on the sample, (explaining wich one substitutes wich), make him sign it. If you’re goin for the printed version, make a small sample proof, , and make him sign it!!! Never forget that!!

Don’t forget also to explain him that diferent types of media using same color, in same printer, will result in a diferent color output. Basically what i mean is:
    you’re in a minefield!! (hot)

Just be sure you explain it to him in a professional tone and he’ll just forget what designer did, and will trust you and your professional knowledge. ๐Ÿ˜‰

I think Rod’s solution probably sorted you out already, but i think you could easily do it in Corel as well, anyway here it goes for future reference, you just need to set your duplicate distance previously to the size of your object + 2mm, and then use control+D to duplicate it as many times as you need. Sounds like what you asked was exactly not to duplicate but i would do it this way, afetr all you just need to set the duplicate distance once and then press Control and without releasing it press 49 times D key. If you use the aligner i think you would have to count it anyway.

    Just my 2 cents. ๐Ÿ˜•

I’m sure the picture doesn’t do this job the justice it deserved.

Altought i tend to agree with everyone about it being too busy, i’ve to recognize this: it catched my attention, and thinking that 95% of the potential customers will only see the van for a few seconds than it as done it’s job, only thing it’s that they’ll have to run after the van just to catch the details. As we all know this was probably one of those jobs where customer wants that only that, nothing less, we can see that from all the lettering around the logo.

I recognize i’m the first to dislike any of my jobs, when looking after finishing them, i always think that i could have improved something, but what the h**l, i need to eat also, and i can’t eat designs.

I think Cheryl’s words said it all: Mission – pay the bills, sleep well at night ! , in the end that’s all the counts.

    Great fitting job!!!
    Keep up the good work!!

If your only problem is to convert the fonts into curves then you can do it previously in Corel, select the text to convert goto Arrange/Convert to curves,

if the problem is with AI file then u should try to export (File/Export/Save as type…save it to a lower version of AI like 6,5, or even 4; they should then be able to open it in AI with no problems at all.

    Hope this helped you out!!

I’m not sure, but i think i’m thinking the opposite from what you said Rodney, i tried roughly to represent in an image what i’m saying, being the darker wood the engraved part and then the doming filling the engraved to it’s edge, but it would had to be enough to stand out if you know what i mean.

Chris i’m not sure it would have this effect i’m trying, as i’ve never done anything similar before can u assure it would look like the image below?

You won’t need to embed your profile as it is set to generic RGB probably, anyway when opening file the printer would overule with is own profile, you might wanna try googling a bit to find your monitor, printer, etc… profiles, but if you wanna go that way i can advice it’s longer than u might think. If this is not your day to day job you won’t need tha hassle, if you want to set it 100% about colors than it’s a long way from monitor calibration, trough monitor and printers profiles till printer calibrations.
Just to find that it will be 100% … never.

I’ve been there and i do it all the time i change anything, just because that’s my day to day job, of course it’s annoying thing to do, and maybe you won’t take the advantage from it.

Sry if i misunderstood your problem. ๐Ÿ˜ณ
I’ve been on both sides and mispreparation is common here, it happened to me, loads of times, people that said everything is ready to print and when opening the file i had hours of intense labour just to make things right, reason i insist in the printer providing the sample it’s because i tried every single time that it was possible to open the file in front of customer and print it myself. I never liked to explain a customer why he’s paying for something he didn’t asked.

You can find color management in: Tools/Color Management just set it to professional output.

The solution you found is the same that if you just provide the file to the printer as if it was a TIFF, usually that’s the last resource (big file), actually there are a few printers that won’t accept them.

If the shadows disapeared just with increasing fountain steps than i think probably you won’t have any problems with them if you send them in EPS or PDF, but i’d go for a sample from the printer anyway. Another solution might be breakapart shadows from the source this way if you have corel set up properly for output in CMYK, the shadows will be converted in CMYK image with transparent background, instead of being saved in RGB as Corel does when dealing with them, (remember when doing (if you want them grey) this shadows will appear in all 4 colors if you want them to be just in black, easyer way it’s to convert them to grayscale and then to CMYK again otherwise they’ll look bluish. Sometimes helps with sharp edges too.

The reason for printing it darker as to be with embedded profiles, color management and/or printer settings (one more reason to go for the printer to provide the sample), this way if there is any tweaking needed they’ll know what to do before send to separations print.

Once again sry if i didn’t understood your doubts properly if that’s the case then just ignore this post. And (:) me. You couldn’t miss from there could you? ๐Ÿ˜€

    Hope helped you anyway.

I’ve just checked RobGF post after writing my own, and he’s 100% right about what he said, of course i didn’t mention that every printer as he’s own setup and will be able to help when asked too, anyway i just tried to give you my help. ๐Ÿ˜ณ

I’ll try to help in, altought i’m bit busy if you can’t solve the problem till the end of the day then e-mail me at: britchenko@hotmail.com and i’ll solve the problem for you with no doubts.

My guess they’ll look fine on print if they’re set properly but when you ask the printer for a color proof then you’ll have your doubts vanished.

This advice is based on my experience and how i prepare the files, remember always check everything (and i mean it) before sending.

First of all, you really should ask the printer what kind of file fits he’s needs best, my guess Corel won’t be he’s first choice ๐Ÿ™‚ .

Set all the colors as CMYK go to File/Document Info to see if there’s any RGB left behind.

If this is the case than you should export it as EPS (note EPS won’t accept spot colors they be converted to CMYK) or PDF maybe, for EPS you should go to /File/Export/ Save as type…choose EPS, export text as curves (best, if you don’t wanna send the fonts to the printer), choose apply ICC profile with separations printer profile, check auto increase foountain steps, send bitmaps as CMYK in advanced tab choose always postscript 1, fits them all ; then check objects, always overprint black, autospreading (Carefull with this one depends on your leaflet purposes, lettering size etc…) check also Bleed set it at least with 5mm better more than less (Remenber always if you have color on the edges that it should bleed to be cut otherwise when cut misses 0,01 you will see the white paper and that’s not good ๐Ÿ˜‰ check Crop Marks and there you go.

For PDF you should go to: File/Publish to PDF/PDF style, and set it to pre-press goto settings and choose all settings as explained to EPS, Tabs are diferent but you’ll find all of them there (and a few more) in doubt leave as default.

Don’t provide a sample copy if you are not sure if everything it’s ok, ask them to do it, 2 sample copies before print, one that you probably have to autenticate and one for you to keep, this way they will have to make sure it’s ok before print ๐Ÿ˜‰

This is basically it: but in a nutshell there are a lot of other things that need to be completely correct. As i said b4 if you still not sure e-mail me and we’ll arrange one way to solve the problem.

    Cheers

If you want just opinions that’s it!

If you want to see some “smart” ideas from the folks then it would be good to post a AI or CDR file soo we can play a bit with it.

Edit: My humble opinion when doing your own vans or signs you should always try to set the standards a bit higher then you’re normally asked by the customers, this way they will come to get a job just like yours if you show them a basic design they might think you can’t do better than that, if you did that for yourself would you can be able to do better for me? They might ask.

Definitely the design was much better than the old one! Congrats!

About the price, well definitely we’re in diferent championships here we would be charging about 150 + Vat max. (7 years vinyl, simple design), more than that and people would spit on us in street. Fortunately people here won’t mind to pay a bit more just to get a nice design. ๐Ÿ˜€

About quoting, NEVER give a price without thinking properly how you gonna do it, remember 1 mm more and you could waste double of material (or at least stock it till you find another job that fits and that could be: never). Planing your jobs is very important. I did a simple excel file with few calculations for quoting, so far i’m very happy with it, and specially in beginning it was very helpful.

Another advice, remember don’t do too much cheap jobs just for “beer money”, one day if you need to charge a bit more people won’t see it that way it’s much easier to low prices than the opposite!.

    Looks good !

My opinion: keep the first triangles, they’re simple but much more efective, but keep the white outline.
Change the vinyl graphics to Vinyl design like Shane said, and try to find a font that can be read easily.
I would try to add a bit more red not sure if in 1st graphics or in one of the underlines.
I hope this makes sense to you.

Always good with this kind of stuff to add an AI or CDR file, soo people can try themselves before spiting in the air.

As well, as the pics facilities Rob mentioned. I’m starting a small business based on laser engraving soo this couldn’t come in a better time. I know already all the foruns Rodney said, but lately it seems they all are in a “cooling” situation, not many posts, pictures or something to discuss about.
Would be great if you do a forum like that after all, this is the most friendly and participated forum i know, certainly it could be good for all the engravers already registered and for all signmakers in general coz’ they could share some technics involved in both processes.

    Rob, just go for it!!!

    Big thx to you all,

i’ll check all of that as soon as i can, including if i won’t be held responsible if the paint comes off when it’s time to take it off.

Rob, MacTac it’s available here i’ll check if they have that one as well. I think they should know if they couldn’t use vinyl on helmets, but anyway i’ll tell them if they still are up to it, it’s there problem not mine.

By the way, did a cellphone company (V… phone), exhibited recently a TV ad with a racing track in Superbikes there in UK? If so it might be that you have seen this particular pilot with is loved helmet on. (for about 2 secs anyway) ๐Ÿ˜€

    This is a blind shot,
im not very familiar with that specs in illustrator but maybe, illustrator is set to rebuilt shadows, fades, … , after opening the file, and probably that’s the reason you are getting only a low resolution print in those parts of the design, if you set illustrator to save those at a specific resolution in the file than when you convert it to EPS all the shadows, fades, … , will be there at required resolution and not being just a large band of color. If you still can’t solve this at the end of the day or till tomorrow morning let me know and i’ll check it myself, im a bit busy now.

Hope this didn’t got too much confusing. the process is very similar to Corel and you can find it in Corel trough Options/Document/Save, i’ll check later in Illustrator.

As far as i can see the only way to convert jpeg or bitmap files to dxf it’s to vectorise it, either by hand or using a program like Corel Trace or Adobe Streamline and then convert it to dxf as it is a native type file for CAD programs.

Not sure if i said everything as i wished but here it goes.

But make sure you correct your “Control Panel” text. That might take u to have a second try on fitting! ๐Ÿ˜‰

I’m sure you and all the guys noticed but correct it as soon as you can, happened often to me that a error that as been spoted not corrected straight away and when job goes to print u lately discover that it was the only thing u missed, enough to ruin a great job!

Edit: I’m sure you didn’t finish your job yet, don’t you think u should have diferent icons on the left panel (e.g. Computer case for hardware, Software Box for software…i think it would make a huge diference but that’s just my opinion.

Altough that there isn’t any software that can be better than vectorizing by hand. If you’re really into it than you should try Adobe Streamline as well, far better than Trace, u just have to play a bit, “well a lot “with it till you find the correct settings for your picture. And don’t ever forget the better picture you suplly to it the best results you can achieve.

Here’s another thread that covered it as well.

It’s all up to you entering the schem or not!
I really don’t know how things work up there but…

I hope this little story helps you make your mind as it’s second hand, i was the designer and management wasn’t in my hands but followed it closely.

I worked 2 years ago in a printing company that was proposed exactly the same schem as evox proposed, it was a Total of โ‚ฌ 50.000 +/- divided by 6 diferent jobs. After the first 2 jobs the main company really liked all we were doing, and decided they wanted to work directly with us in diferent jobs, without notifying the smaller company or the printing company they asked for quotations with the exact same quantity and specs, it was tourist guides for diferent regions, when they got the quotations confronted the smaller company someone there told them what was going on. End of story: a potentially real good customer gone! Never finished the jobs already quoted and it was a **** in the a** to receive what was already made coz’ they holded it as far as they could.

u can take a close look at ALL the answers in this topic:

    https://www.uksignboards.com/viewtopic.p … rt&start=0

or u can use the Paul’s and Ramj’s solutions (very useful for simple problems like yours) or u can try Adobe Streamline (one of the best’s i know) u might be able to find someone that as got the full program or maybe u got a demo yourself if you are using original software from adobe, i think u can find it in the Cd’s that came with your Illustrator or Photoshop in Demos folders.

Of course another aproach would be draw it by hand, you would get much better results than in all the other metods, althought it’s muuuuch more time consuming.

    Hi, Dayi

1st of all u should be aware of what are your really needs for pantone booklet otherwise maybe you’ll buy a pantone swatch that doesn’t fit to your needs. That should be your 1st concern.

    http://desktoppub.about.com/cs/color/bb … ebooks.htm

A bundle to start would be:
    http://www.pantone.com/products/product … Products=0

but maybe u don’t wanna spend that much!

it seems that 299 was on every pantone guide reseller head, and it’s amazing that u can find $299 USD for euro guides, as well as ยฃ299. Weird?
just checked a few in diferent countries

    http://www.tecnimprensa.pt/survival%20kit.htm (Portuguese)

the only that i found cheaper, if u or someone wanna go for the bundle it’s
    http://www.graphiland.fr/produc_t/produ … PSK&CS=Yes
but it’s french!! u just need to check the costs for packaging

Another advice is if u talk to a seller maybe they’ll try to sale u a color cue device, my experience says that those got a long way to go before they are trustable.

Thanks for the link it could become useful in some of the tips in there, BUT and there’s always a but, to do that kind of vector images, since almost everybody uses CorelDraw wouldn’t it be much easier to use CorelTrace?

It’s very easy to use and intuitive! Just give it a try!
Opens any logo on almost any image file format and converts it to curves, even if u need to do a small retouch would be much easier than this one shown on the tutorial! Just remenber the more accurate, more points u got on your vector line and maybe u’ll need to smooth the line.

    Hi Fredrik,
well my experience tells me that the post from dsi is right on the spot, if you are handling diferent color profiles, you should expect diferent output colors, just check it, meanwhile dont forget you got a CMYK printer so it would be better if you calibrate all your software and your monitor to emulate CMYK colors, u needed to be more specific soo i could help a bit more with calibration, by the way if you are using EPS on CorelDraw, that maybe an issue as well, if the original file wasn’t CDR, why? well can’t explain u but i’ve been long hours around that issue and sometimes it works great sometimes don’t, even beginning with same file and repeating all steps. You can try to do it as a PDF and see if u can solve your problem, worked for me several times and you won’t loose the cutline (don’t forget always to check wich color profile you are using).
About upgrading Corel well it worth the shot! However don’t forget to ask your manufacturers, if there were any related problems with drivers and related stuff, at least specially with cutters i know some people whom had (still have with some old equipments) a lot of problems when upgrading above CDR9.

Meanwhile, just go to your Corel Menu and look for Color Management and check your settings, maybe you are using RGB profile in Corel. Try work around profesional output and desktop printing or do your own profile ๐Ÿ™‚ , Adobe Gamma would be a good place to start your monitor calibration.

Hope i had understood your doubts, as i said before my english isn’t very good. Hope i helped i some way just let us know!

    Cya

Thanks everyone for that warm welcome!!! :thumbup2:

I’ll try to answer everyone’s doubts by order, except u Dewi, ๐Ÿ˜‰ ehehe

Peter, i can imagine u’ve been there or soo, did u enjoy it? and yes i’m very close 16 kms (10 miles +/-) from “Quarteira”.

Rob, thx for that advice i know famous Rodney posts from another forum, and as far as i can see he’s just a great guy, always there for the newbies and always very accurate in he’s thought’s. I ordered already the Laser, and i think i followed Rodney on this one, as one of he’s big concerns about hardware is the assistance, and i choosed the one’s closer and the one’s that i had better opinions from other users, just lucky me that they were the same company. ๐Ÿ™‚
In fact i always try to know if Rodney got any opinion about what im looking for as i’ve lived in Africa, and i know things there are much more dificult to achieve than here in Europe, unfortunately Portugal seems to be very close to Africa in those issues, maybe those whom have been here agree with me!

John, at this time not very warm (18ยบC during day), but i believe it’s much warmer then UK, ๐Ÿ˜Ž :cheer:.

Dewi, ok just to tell it’s not a big deal, but everybody uses to ask soo i took advance this time, but it’s really a long story, since almost kindergarden ๐Ÿ˜› ; and if i was going to write that soap, i wouldn’t have time to enter this business maybe i’ll do it on my retirement. eheheh!

To all the others i didn’t mentioned but welcomed me, a BIG HUG!!!

Thank you all! I feel almost home! ๐Ÿ™‚ ๐Ÿ˜ณ
