Totally agree William Smith are great I think Jean misunderstood my comment directed at big brand products. they are great and as good and no better in my opinion than Oracal but you pay a premium for an established brand name behind them.

    Weight it

Full roll – core weight divided by 50 gives you an estimate weight per meter
I have had some success with this +/- 1 m but be careful as different manufacturers use different density of Core’s so you have to adjust.

    Feel your pain Jean
I hope someone can secure a distributor deal and a supply chain in the UK

I have contacted Antalis twice about supplying me and twice been promised a call back still no joy
I was spending average 3k + a month with Paperlinks you would think they would be chomping at the bit to pick up new customers.

I have gone with 800 series from William Smith as a cast alternative but paying for the name…

At a loose end now Paperlinx has gone on who to go with.

    Thanks for all the tips.
I just placed a scrap piece on the printer and the metal in front and back of the print area is steel and the Magnetic sheet does stick is this a problem just with Mimakis when printing or is everybody else’s printers made of aluminum so it wasn’t an issue.

Your probably thinking just do a test and stop bothering us. my dilemma is it’s about 100m of 1200mm wide magnetic material I dont want to order coated magnetic if i end up printing onto white vinyl and laminating it onto uncoated magnetic materiel.

Ill phone around today and let you know how i get on.

    I got my dampers from
    http://www.digiprint-supplies.com/index.php

but i havent fitted them yet as all is working fine at the moment

the syringe would definatly be the better option to draw ink through the line

no drips from me I would check they are seated properly.

the only time i get drips contaminating the print is if the head is dirty usually find a tiny hair or a piece of fluff is the problem and once cleared it fixes the problem I use foam pads and a torch so i can get a good look at the head when im cleaning.

    foam buds available from

    http://cpc.farnell.com/1/1/43005-foambu … olube.html

best of luck let us know how you get on

well Good news I had a gut feeling that it was an ink starvation problem off some sort. After running every clean in the book I did a system flush and put the original flush cartridges that shipped with the machine (so glad i hung on to them i remember the guy who set it up was really keen to take them away with him) back in and cleanned the lines and head it was quite scary and anyone who hasnt seen your machine do this be prepaired for a violent back and forth shaking of the head halfway through. I think this is it swilling the solution around within the dampers to clean them out.

Well after refilling it appered to be slightly better and from a 45% failer it had reduced to 25% after a few more refills and cleans and and some blocked randem blocked nozzels , probably due to not having enough ink to refill straight away so the machine was in limbo for awhile untill I could pick some up today. (Big THANKS to Steve at Rising Signs for letting me pinch his spares ) I am happy to report It eventually came back to 100%.

My conclusion is it was not the Print Head, or a pump and was probably something restricting the ink flow to the print head, blockage, air bubble, dirty line, who knows? Anyone who may be concidering a Mimaki remember hang onto your Flush cartridges you may need them one day and never do a system flush without having two full sets of ink ready to refill imediatly after clean.

PS. Stafford I had already swapped the dampers yesterday exactly as you suggested but it didnt seem to make a difference. or maybee it did in combination with the flush and clean.

PPS. Many thanks for the advise Colin and Stafford and I hope this info might help any future Mimaki owners who come across the same problems. I will add that during my research I found a spares company in Belgum for all makes of machine and they do the dampers for 4 euro each and a six month service kit with full instructions on how to install inbox me if anyone wants the details..

Not one of the possible service companies I spoke to about an engineer call out suggested that I try the above, before they sent out an expensive tech. and there cost estimates were from £250 to £345 to come and take a look. I am not against thease companies making a living and one day after a major problem will rely on them to keep my machine up and running but I was disapointed that they lacked Integrity I suppose it would be like us fitting green letters on a blue van because thats what the customer asked for. well sometimes you you have to offer Free advise it pays dividens in the end. I will have to think carefully who I purchase an ongoing service contract with.

Great Website David thanks for that. I have discovered two websites in Australia one in India and 4 in the united Kingdom that have all copied blocks of text. fortunately none have copied any pictures. I am glad to say that the offending Website is now not showing any of my pictures or bodies of text.

It took one email and 72 hours later I get a reply that simply read.

" The Web site will be taken off line shortly ."

no explanation or apology. well what do you expect.

Its quite strange but i feel like i have been violated I imagine this is how a person must feel when they have been burgled and had their personal belongings tossed out of their draws and stolen.

I’m going to give them 24 hrs to respond and then ill get the big guns out. What seems a shame is that some of the other work on this site that seems to be local so probably done by this company seem quite good and client list looks reputable. As you say David they have been around since 1999 so should have a great portfolio of work to display. it smells a rat and I hope that the Web master is to blame and not one of the sign fraternity.
As I will not enjoy having to take a fellow sign maker through the courts.

    Thanks all for your reply’s

The more I look into the site the madder I get they have copied downloadable pdf’s word for word I would estimate 75% of the images are from my web site. estimated 200 plus so i imagine most of the rest are from someone else’s, the FAQ section is word for word the section headers are almost identical. I am gobsmacked that someone in this creative industry should show such a lack of creativity to copy the info so blatantly. I have sent an email but have had no reply yet.

I really feel like naming and shaming, I know some here have suggested it may be the web designers fault but the owner surely would know that the images were not his signs and unlikely available in the public domain. and as you say Kevin why would you want other peoples work on your web site.

The signatures in his testimonial’s may be getting an email from me letting them know what an unscrupulous scoundrel and internet vagabond they are dealing with…… Its internet highway robbery……

Interesting info hear I like the raised platform with the fan Shane. We are new to the print and cut world and still finding our feet. unfortunately due to bad planning we have laminated within 3 to 4 hours of printing what are the consequences are going to see these jobs back due to failure how long will it take to de-laminate if its going to. Whats the best method solution for gassing out hanging, rolling up, leaving out on the bench was our previous option but reading Robs comments im going to re think this and use an alternative method. Thanks for all the tips guys.

Some good points here. we quote all vehicles fitted at ours and add a premium for onsite and weekend installs. One thing to rememder also is if the customer leaves his vehicle it becomes your responsibility and if damaged when moving it around or in your workshop could cost you. Check your insurance covers you and any employees to drive customers vans.

They are OK outside but you might want to point out that if they get dirty on the reverse you may have to remove to clean. the fixings can also be easily unscrewed so a drop of locktight on the thread can help with this. But then its dificult to remove for cleaning. catch 22…… neil

Not sure what you mean by publish.

i select the design and clik File Print
instead of my printer i click on Adobe PDF in the list and it creates preview
i hit print and select the folder to save into
hit save and then Adobe Acrobat opens showing what it has just created but has the item upside down i have tried rotating and saving but when you open the document again its upside down again.

    Its just pdfs

not sure about tiffs and jpegs as they are saved and not printed To

my concern is customers having to rotate onscreen to see them the right way up. i can rotate in Signlab and then print and this works but is a bit of a pain but if you have dimensions on screen they stay upside down.

November 1, 2008 at 8:37 pm in reply to: A-Board, Pavement signs, How do you price them?

We don’t do a lot of these but Is because I am not cheap as a rule of thumb I take the purchase cost and double it I swallow the delivery cost but tend to reduce this by ordering 2 or 3 at a time, then add the cost of the graphics typically between £30 and £50 a side depending on complexity and time taken to design. This method weeds out the time wasters and the ones we do get are worth doing. On the larger forecourt signs and multiples I might be a bit keener but generally I apply this rule to anything that costs me up to £100. I have been down the painted timber route in the early 90,s but I’m no painter and after I had spent hours cutting ply and moldings buying hinges and chains paint and then applying graphics and then on delivery to be told I was looking for something a bit more professional I gave up… each to there own.

Clear vinyl !!! that’s how you do it. Did you finish at the door jam or did you trim around the graphics as I notice you have a faded print running of to white. I did a job about four years ago on some vans it was our first attempt at partial wrapp we struggled to match the cream colour of the van but but i bet if we had used clear it would have been better. The colour stuff is all new to me so im glad to pick up some tips its surely going to save me money when we start printing in house.

I have attached a pick do you think this would have worked in clear I appreciate any feed back.

I like your professional approach Ken.

Walk in’s can be a distraction to us as a high st sign shop but for every one that wastes your time there are 3 with money to spend so skillful handling and fact finding is a must. I don’t like to barter with prices either my normal line is do you ask for discount at the till at Sainsburys ?
or well if you want to barter Wembley market is open on Sunday see if you can get a better deal there.

I tend to hit small orders with a small order charge normally £20.00 and have charged this for the word PUSH 30 mm caps
cut from a bit of scrap. if only I could do 50 of these a day wouldn’t life be simple……

the wacky racers we get in we have a standard price list. cash up front
    sun strip £50.00
logo on the sun strip £50.00
    x 5 corporate logo’s in a stacks £50.00
    Clifford alarm sticker £25.00 each

Im not really that mean and have had an inclination to play with an odd motor myself in the past but the thousands these kids spend on dressing their cars nowadays. they can afford it…….

You would be amazed how many say yes and we and were still laughing along time after the thud of there stereo has faded into the distance.

Great to here about your day Phill.

Thermal or ink ? to laminate or not to laminate is that the question ??
Thanks for the feed back chaps..

What I am after is a combination of durability and ease of production, cost is not the main concern, but space is limited, I have concidered an edge 2 but feel that for not much more money I could get a dc3 less joins not as high res but 300 dpi fine for what it would be used for (Functional Signage) my experiance with inkjet is not to good i have a small graftec signjet pro using GO inks and have had poor durability problems even when we have laminated with vinyl. havnt used it for 12 months at the moment all work is subed out to larger print houses that offer print and thermal.
I dont think that moving into large format digital printing is the direction i want to take at the moment. or the market Im set up to deal with.

But I would like to be able to print 10 750 mm x 750 mm prints for the side of 5 transit vans in the morinig 200off 100 mm x 50 mm 2 colour hard hat stickers over lunch and half a dozen A4 faded logo’s for some site boards before I go home for me dinner. We are a full service high st retail sign shop and I want a work horse that will plod a long complimenting the vinyl graphics that we do verry well at.

What i do understand now is that all need laminating if durability is required
but ink and cut or thermal print and cut ?

Your oppinoins and comments will be well received..

    Thanks Neil…

Penny washers are good, we generally have our wall mounted banners made without eyelets and fix through the hem they hold up well. On bigger banners we use lengths of treated roofing batten and hammer fix’s. I have A 40 M banner up for over 5 years now still looks fine. I use bungee’s like Steve suggested if I have a sight that regularly updates there banners but find the bungee’s need replacing after a couple of years as they perish.

January 8, 2004 at 10:03 am in reply to: Operating from a Shop – is it a good move?

    Hi Joe
I agree with all above when I made the move to a retail outlet the things I was looking for were as follows.

    Volume of passing trade
    Customer parking
    Workshop space
    Cost rent & rates ect
Location in regard to local business estates and commercial areas

I already had an existing customer base so I wasn’t starting out from scratch and I think that that you would need to market the shop in other ways if you were starting out from scratch. Its about awareness and getting your name about a combination of.

Yellow pages, Retail Shop, Mail shots, Leaflet Drops
Put your name on everything you do if its a sticker on an aboard or a key ring attached to the van drivers keys just get your name about.

this will generate a steady flow of work that will ultimately lead to a solid customer base that provides repeat business and regular referrals.

Also the appearance of your premises is important I see so many sign shops that have poor signage that looks like it was rushed and done on a budget invest in an upmarket professional sign it inspires confidence and if you look corporate it attracts business from all sectors.

keep things fresh I change my window displays and graphics on the facia every 2 years it gives you a chance to show new products and creates interest when people visit display samples and show pieces of work its normally not relevant to the customers needs but it inspires customers confidence in you.

Good luck with your project if you fancy a chat or are ever passing by feel free to call in.

    Thanks for the comments
re cutting depth I wonder if you could use a plotter blade holder like the ones on the graphtec plotters so you can set the depth to 60microns an just score the vinyl I bet Edward Mathias could manufacture a holder just for this job you would find it hard to cut in the corners but a cut on the vally floor may be just as effective.

Remember where you heard it first 😆

Re: what printer? I dont actually know as I bought the prints in from DDI
they are unlaminated prints ( Solvent I think ) on Avery easy apply, very conformable and with stood the Mike the Sign Rub test so I hope they hold up the printer gave me a 3 year guide to durability.

We spec all our digital prints at 50 dpi actual sise we dont print inhouse but all the prints we have had at that spec have been OK we try not to incorporate text and add that as a vinyl graphic after the print is fitted
Ive posted a pic of a job I did last week in showus your stuff. The vinyl was Avery (easy apply)
It went on a treat and ill think you will agree the quality is more than good enough.

very nice job I like the set square did you draw that up from scratch or was it clip.

A bit of constructive I dont think it neaded the second name as big
looks a bit crouded and if your intension was a water mark effect could the smaller text have gone below the trim line just a thought.

Great to see your work it inspires mutch needed ideas in my own designs.

November 24, 2003 at 11:53 pm in reply to: Window Graphics : Various Etch Work

I think the wet question is realy only relevent to the type of vinyl you are fitting and the way you fit it I fit all my window graphics other than frost dry but Frosted crystal which is my preferd frosted film is a Film like no other its strong adhesive and soft texture mean you get no second chances no option to whip it back and reposition, other more economical vinyls react differently and fit well dry but lack the lustre and sparkle of FC and at over £20.00 a meter you dont want to screw it up and start again. maybe it is a confidence thing but I would like to see any fitter fit a 1m wide x 4m 3M frosted crystal panel with fretcut text on a warm shop window dry, if you have done it then total respect to your skill and confidence. if it’s a line of text some dots or a 100mm band then dry is probably best.

When I price my frosted work I always give the option of a cheaper film but generally when you give the customer the option and show them samples they dont mind paying the extra.

I train all the guys that work for me and encorage all to fit dry its faster and when learnt a lot easier to do but some jobs need a little bit of slip to get position and to eliminate trapped air.

For reference my the Ideal slip solution for frosted window work is 1” Meths in a Spray bottle 3 drops of shampoo topped up with water. Drys out within 10 to 15 mins so no need for a return visit.

So when are we going to flex are squeeges and arange the vinyl olympics 😉 😉
