Banner fixing to brick wall
Posted by Steve Thurlow on January 28, 2004 at 11:59 amHi Guys,
Just a very simple problem that I am sure there is an easy answer to.I have a 3mt x 2ft banner to fix this weekend, onto a pub brick wall, I don’t want to use ropes and the pub is fine with me drilling holes (are they mad!! 😕 )
I got the banner from Bannerbox & asked if they could supply washers/grommets for the eyelets but alas they don’t stock such things. So before i head off to B&Q anyone got any ideas?Cheers, Steve

my local supplier does short loops of bungee cord with a plastic ball at one end so it doesn’t pull through the eyelets, I then screw hooks in the wall and fit to these.

Penny washers are good, we generally have our wall mounted banners made without eyelets and fix through the hem they hold up well. On bigger banners we use lengths of treated roofing batten and hammer fix’s. I have A 40 M banner up for over 5 years now still looks fine. I use bungee’s like Steve suggested if I have a sight that regularly updates there banners but find the bungee’s need replacing after a couple of years as they perish.

Thanks Steve & Neil for the helpful tips,
Steve, I’ve used these short bungees before, I will give it some thought as they will keep the banner nice n tight (just how I like em 😳 )
hang on…. just remembered I bought a batch of bungees last Summer, (a quick root in the shed) just found them but they’re the ones with the hooks instead of balls, hmmmNeil, great idea, shame it’s been made with eyelets now… bugger, might still go with washers of some sort that are larger than the eyelets, then the jobs going to take longer to pull tight where as the bungee solution will be a bish bash bosh & a few twangs of the bungees 😉

we normaly just cut some 2 inch squares of alluminium from old scrap cuttings of white. drill a 5mm hole in the centre and place them over the eyelet and rawl plug it to the wall with a screw.
remember to start in the centre, top & bottom, working your way left and right.. 😉

I put my bannersup with bungees whenever I can, as for them perishing yes they do in fact one of my customers ordered some new bungees last week !!
They always keep the banners taught and people like banner box sell the different style bungee cords and hooks as well.
A more expensive option would be a banner frame available from the same sort of place. -
Thanks Rob & Martin,
To Bungee or to use washers & screws???? 😕
I have just had a quick play with the banner & a couple of bungees, banged a couple of nails into the shed rafters to see what happens, on smaller banners bungees at each end pull the banner nice & taut but on this 3mt banner it’s starting to sag so it needs suport in the middle. On this banner there are 4 eyelets top & bottom, I think 8 bungees around this banner will look horrid, I think it will work just as well with washers & screws. Luckily the Bannerbox eyelets are only 20mm so I should be able to buy 20mm metal washers. (-) Ideally what I need is a tappered hard rubber washer approx 10mm deep, face dia of 20mm base dia 12mm with a hole in the middle, then when placed in the eyelet & screwed to the wall it would trap any movement.
Has this been thought of before?
Or can I go into production & supply the world with the
😀 😀 ‘Thurlow Banner Washer’ 😀 😀

Just to let you know…..
I have made 100s of banners in the last 15 years but I very rarely have to put the damn things up 😆
I usually supply ropes or bungees & let the poor customer have the fun of installing them.So this is the biggest banner I’ve ever had to hang & as it’s my local pub I thought i’d better do it properly 😉
Cheers,

The knocking gets faster and he doesn’t know when to come in’ 😀Boom Boom

I know l’m a bit late with this one but Grafityp do a bungee clip, they are to be used with or withour the ropes. They clamp onto the banner and grip it very very well, you then screw the clamp to the wall and you have a tight fixing. They are available in two sizes, l’ve started using them instead of buying a welding machine to put up my digital printed banners.

This is a bit late as well, but we would use loops of 6mm square section rubber about 70mm long. These are stronger and longer lasting than ordinary bungees.
We get them from our local camping shop, who sell them for holding down the bottom of tents. 😀
