  • Which printer? for a starter in digital printing…

Posted by Ben Hansen on March 12, 2009 at 11:02 am

Hey guys, just wondering if you could advise me. Im looking into buying a digital printer. I have always had my eyes on a Mutoh Valuejet 1304. But after talking to a respectable source yesterday i have now been put off. He recommended that i should look at the Roland Verscam 54" or a mimaki. Sorry for being vague.. But any advise would be great. dont really need anything bigger than 54" and around the same price range as the above mentioned 🙂 Look forward to your help

Versacamm VP540 here, and it’s a fantastic piece of kit, wouldn’t use anything else .

Hi Ben, Mimaki, Roland, Mutoh are all good machines. In terms of print quality and space saving design the Mutoh Valuejet 1304 is on top the list.

    Hi Ben,

I’m in the mimaki camp. I would if you can wait until Sign UK. This year there are some amazing deals already being banded around on new and refurbished kit. A mate of mine bought a Mimaki JV33 which had been repossessed after 6 months. Got 3 years warranty and paid nearly half of the rrp. Not bad. eh.

Recession is a really crappy time for everyone, however it is a buyers market. If there is something to come out of it it is time to beat the suppliers up on price.

Oh , On the mimaki, really really like it but don’t over order inks as they have a silly time chip in which can be a bit restricting.

    Good luck. Happy Hunting.

    Cheers
    Adam.

Although I’ve got the older SP300 versacamm I still say the versacamm

I’d love to get the VP540 if I get a chance and nearly bought one rather than a embroidery machine

Just to add a question to what Ben has asked would anyone advise on the VP300, and apart from the obvious size difference is there any disadvantage against the 54"?
Bearing in mind I will be going from an edge 1, and with that in mind is there anything the edge would be better for?

Roland SP300 here (well uniform cadet)
You are better getting the 54" machine if you can though as 30" is just off being able to do things like rollups etc.

What about the Roland VersaArt RS640? It’s got 4 heads, speed is very good, and I would predict that you’ll need that width in the future. Plus, the price is not that high also.

    Hi,

We have a Roland XC540 Pro Print Cut thingy….. We bought it at the sign show last year and paid 12k for it not bad for a brand new machine with support, training and installation……

    Many Thanks

cadet 54" running bulk ink, cannot fault it at all, been a great machine for the past 3 years with no problems at all. Look around as you might get a second user machine for as little as 5-6k even fro the wider version.

    cheers

Hi Ben Im in the market for a printer as well hope to make a decision at Sign UK toss up between mimaki and roland. I think Mimaki is print only and Roland is print and cut
this could be the decider for me or do mimaki do a print and cut now. we should team up maybe they will do a but one get one free offer. also are you going to get a laminater as well

    my advice is simple.

We were buying in digital prints from some of the best trade printers in the country, so when we got our machine, we had to ensure the quality was not less than what we were outsourcing.

We bought last yr, a Mimaki JV33 160, with the Mimaki Cutter and a Seal 62S laminator, and all the machines have worked at least for 5 hours each day since we bought them in September! Quality investment.

    Hi Ben
I was in the same position as you 18 months ago. It was my first inkjet printer and I figured it was either a Roland or Mimaki. Richard at signmaster said they were both great machines but for a first printer he thought the mimaki was better because you could turn it on after a month and print straight away. Lo and behold, I went to the states last year for a month, came back, turned it on, done a test print and it was perfect. I cannot speak for the Roland because I have never had one. But the Mimaki is a great first ‘big’ printer. Downsides are that because it cleans itself so regularly it does use a fair bit of ink, which concerned me at first but then the work started to pick up so it wasn’t so much of a problem. TIP, Buy the biggest you can afford. I bought the JV3 75. I wished straight away that I had got the JV3 130. Obviously the machines have have moved on (JV33). Good Luck mate

second hand original JV3-160S with 6 inks. Slow but who needs a speed of a bullet train if you can leave it over night. Oh then comes learning how to maintain it without service contract. hmmm
i would be tempted with the reports from the Roland camp, although I would never touch another Mutoh!

We have a Uniform Cadet, a Grenadier 74 (Roland Versacam SP540 & Soljet PRO II SJ740) and an Oce CS9160 (Mutoh Vajuejet 1614). Being able to have both makes it easier to compare. We hardly use the rolands.

In terms of speed at 4pass 720x720dpi the Roland Soljet Pro 8sqm/hour with acceptable quality.
Whereas The VJ-1614 can hit 18.x sqm/hour in 720×720 4 pass mode with kind of quality that outperform the Soljet.

It also makes me wonder why other companies such as B&P Lightbrigade, Epson, Xerox, Oce, Asbru, Fujifilm etc are now rebranding Mutoh instead of Mimaki and Roland as they used to.
