just following on from david rogers advice I received 2 8×4 of 4.5mm polypropylene (simona pvc is the brand name) from europoint yesterday.

Got to say mate initial impressions are excellent, really nice to cut on and the scores dont seem to affect cuts. cost me £32 per sheet, the 3mm is only £24 I think per sheet.

I have 2 x new solid steel benches arriving next weeks so am looking forward to putting the whole lot together. Not sure if I can post about where I got these but it was an excelelnt deal for £99 for an 8×4 steel bench with shelving below the main surface. This will free up a hell of a lot of space for me.

    cheers for the tip.

That does sound like a good deal!

We paid a lot more than that for our 1500×5000 bench but got it custom built by a local fabricator. It has mdf tops with 5mm laying on top. I know this is going to cause problems so may look into this stuff when the 5mm gets knackered.

ps: sorry I should add these are only 8ft x 3ft, Im putting 18mm ply on top and then the polyprop material. 18mm ply cheap as chips though 🙂

all in a 16ft x 4ft bench should be around £280-£300 and should last for years

    thats cheap!!

Polyprop at that price. I looked around and everywhere was twice the price. Looks like I might have to give europoint a call!

Currently I have my top lined with laminated hardboard. Does the job but could be better!

yes white, if you put a light under it would be a good lightbox as its semi see through if that makes sense, feels nice cutting on it. I dont need this facility tho.

Sounds like you are really getting things organised Graeme, my work bench was similar to what you have done. I had metal tables the same but I used 18mm MDF and a glass top. Now I don’t have the unit I am struggling for space and trying to work on a kitchen table is a bit of a nightmare after being spoiled for so long.

I’m still using got one of the 8×4’s I bought 3 years ago and it’s fine…a bit covered in cut marks, but perfectly usable.
