    Steve…

agree with the other Steve about the title.

I couldn’t get past the front page due to a ‘debug’ problem that comes up when you hover over the small menu text just under the main title?…maybe just me, cus no image came up on the left either?…

I like the overall presentation of the page and the colour/theme..

Thanks David and Rodney for providing essential reading for so many of us who are looking at this model…

can I be really stupid here (and I’m probably repeating a previous post or two) but can someone quickly remind me what ‘coated’ and ‘un-coated’ media means? I’m getting old and I forget stuff! 😉 Does it relate to a particular type of vinyl or vinyl vs some other material?…

    thank you

My wife and I are discussing getting one of these imminently – for us, it provides a reasonably priced answer to the whole price/outdoor life/smelly ink/width of media/heat-no heat/ink vs ribbon thing and based on the comments of those who have used it or seen it in operation, I’m pretty sure it’ll do what I need…and then some… 😎

Now, where did I stash all that wonga?…”Clare, don’t throw out that old matress!”

    Gray,

you could use the normal ‘nipples and cups’ fixings (snapfix is one make) just as you would do with raised lettering on an external wall. Only difference is you need hollow wall fixings. These are like little anchors that go through the plaster board and once in the cavity they open up like little unbrellas and give a gentel but secure fixing.

    good luck

My wife and I are avid users of Ebay – and that’s always a good laugh with, hopefully, something to show at the end of it. Auctioning wtuff is so much more exciting than straight selling…only downside is you’ve got to be prepared to take the highest bid over your reserve price.

go for it – gotta be worth a try anyroad’

    I agree with Phill…

If there’s one thing working for yourself does to you – it’s ‘harden you up’!

The big mistake here (not being funny) is assuming that the customer has the same morals you do!…When someone doesn’t pay you for such a long time they are showing nothing but pure contempt for both you and what you’ve done. In no uncertain terms, they are dismissing you as ‘unimportant’ !!! Any decent person would have rung you and sorted out some form of payment long ago.

There’s an old saying: “…fool me once shame on you – fool me twice shame on me!…” Never a truer word said…so don’t let this situation be one where he ‘fools you twice’!

I would do nothing until the customer asks about it…chances are he’s either too embarassed or too scared to do anything more about it – and will likely have the paint and signwork re-done by someone else! The fact is that ‘scared’ is the keyword here…you said he paid you after you’d taken down the lettering – chances are he then became ‘scared’ about what else you might do if he didn’t pay you! A lot of people who don’t pay aren’t ‘hard nuts’ – they’re just little sh*ts who think you’ll be too nice to say anything – all they need is a slap…

I wouldn’t lose any sleep over it – honest, just keep thinkning to yourself ‘it’s his fault – NOT MINE!” Forget all the legal crap and deal with this on a ‘law of the jungle’ basis…if he wants you to put it right then he’s gunna have to ask nicely and pay for it too! You gotta learn to be a little proud and defiant in this game if you’re gunna survive.

Always remember – if he has treated you this way then the chances are he treats everyone this way and so no one will blame you for sitting tight! – they’re all probably wishing they had done the same too. There’s no customer relations to save – people like this are not customers – they’re parasites!

Unless he’s a lawyer – or married to one, I wouldn’t worry about the legal side of things…it’s not worth it for either ‘camp’…

    good luck

    once again – absolutely!

some time ago I had a similar occurence – and more than once!

5 metres ordered would arrive as 3.8 metres and the like.

After complaining to Europoint and notifying Rob Lambie (don’t forget to do this via a PM message or by email – so he can keep abreast of the number of niggles happening) I had a call from Frank ‘the man’ at Europoint to apologise and to advise that they now had a stat-of-the-art measuring and slicing machine in Manchester. All someone has to do is load the vinyl into the machine, tap in the meterage required and hey presto! – it’s all done beautifully…???

So either someone tapped in the wrong number or there was only ‘so-much’ left on the roll anyway…?

At the end of the day I suppose it all comes down to human error.

Perhaps Heineken should sell vinyl? 😉

    Outline or ‘J’…is it John?

I must confess that, Signlab aside, I’ve tried a few other sign programs in my time – but not Flexi’.

Just by way of chit-chat – I started using Signlab when it was ‘Electric Studio’ back in the early 1990’s – anyone else remember it? It was only later that it merged with (or was otherwise taken onboard by) Cadlink in Canada. Like many others here, I’ve never found Signlab wanting in anyway. It has always allowed me to do pretty much everything I needed – vehicle graphics, shop fronts, sign boards and even estate agents boards. 😉

I know a number of regulars here use Flexi – I think there’s even been a poll here on the various packages and how many use them. At the end of the day I guess it’s what you’re used to or prefer and whilst they all offer similar functionality, most lead us to pull our hair out sometimes too! 😉

    No worries Kevin…

Just clean the glass, apply the vinyl and walk away…when it comes to removing it – normally a big flat-blade scraper would be used without any heat…

good luck – and don’t worry. If it all goes t*ts up – it’s only a bit of sticky plastic and you can always do it again! 😛

One word of warning though…be careful how you mark out your glass. A common mistake is forgetting where some of your crayon marks are on the glass and then accidentally applying the vinyl over them. You won’t notice anything wrong from your side of the glass – but they can be seen clearly from the other side sandwiched between the glass and the vinyl – too late!

You can always mark up the glass on the other side of the glass – but as you say this isn’t an option in this case.

Another way to avoid this problem is to use pieces of masking tape on the glass to mark your baselines, margins etc and make your crayon marks directly onto the tape. In this way all the marks come off with the tape as the job proceeds… 😉

Hi Steve and Jill, 😀 …luv your web-site!, is it new?

Also, I remember that I never sent you any ideas for your van 🙁 sorry!, can I be of any assistance or have you taken care of all that now?

Odd hours? – yep…we still do some of that. Only difference would be that we don’t do the 6am to 6.30pm thing as well as all the sign work 😕 . Always been a bit of a night owl myself – preferring to design late into the night but then we don’t get going much before 10 o’colck in the mornings… 😕

If it were me, I wouldn’t bend too far for the customer, not if it means you always working crazy hours. Business is a two-way street – they must respect you just as you try to accommodate them.

You’ve gotta leave yourselves some time on the weekends (or other days) else you’re gunna get mean and cranky – and you’ll just burn out! 😛 😀 I know things are different for every single one of us, and maybe you’re not actually working every single day of the year – but look after yourselves eh! you can’t do it all… 😀

and remember, “the graveyards are full of indispencable people” 🙁

    Hi Kevin,

MacTac 9800 is a good all round vinyl and there’s no technical reason why you can’t apply it to the outside of the window…

…but there are the obvious questions to be asked when doing so – like, will ‘little fingers’ try to interfere with it? or will it get damaged by passers-by and those knocking against it?

At the end of the day this is something you have to ask the customer – if it’s their fault you can’t get to the window – or they’re being unhelpful then you have to make them aware of the possible consequences. If you’re just panicking because you’re new to all this and don’t want to ‘bother’ them – then think again…just explain to them that they need to arrange access to the inside window for you, even if this means re-scheduling the visit.

Always remember – don’t let someone else’s problem become your problem – shove it back at ’em! 😉

Hope I havn’t missed the mark with this:-?

    Hi Ken,

    welcome to the UKSignBoards…

if I’m reading this right and you have invested (only) $100 so far then I’d say, withouth being cruel, that you’d be best forgetting about this machine and put it in the bin (or at least selling it to someone else for spares).

In cold hard terms, $100 represents 1 to 2 hours profit in commercial signmaking. I know you’re just starting out and every dollar counts, but this is the kind of thing that you’ll look back on in a year or two and laugh about (hopefully 😕 ).

When we first started we had no software, no plotter, no nothin’ – we worked for almost two years buying our prepared kits of vinyl from another sign company and in the first year alone made the equivalant of $150,000 – just me and the wife. So don’t worry if you can’t afford everything to begin with…there’s always a way around things.

With everything you’ve said about this machine – Summa not building it anymore, the history, the price, the ‘lady’ etc. I’d do what Leeroy suggested and buy a good working machine when you can. Even if you get this machine running, everytime something goes wrong it sounds like you’re going to have hassle getting it fixed – and you don’t need that when you’re learning from scratch and starting a new business…

good luck – and we’ll help in any way we can – even if you choose to try and fix the ‘ol girl! 😉

the phrase in the dark Blue bar – though large – isn’t too bad…

the overall design is good – though that lowest line of text is right-tight to the bottom…

a good looking logo and some nice text arrangments. 😉

Erik, is it a demonstration copy or a full ‘paid-up-‘ version?

If it’s a demo version, considering the low price of on-line purchase for this product, I would consider paying the registration fee and then obtain all the relevant documentation for it (if that’s how it works?).

If you purchased it from someone/somewhere else then contact SignGo at http://www.signgo.com and ask for them if they can send you some booklets or files containing help/tuition…

    Let us know 😉

Cor blimey! – the title of this posts’ had more changes than a Devon Oak Flooring van! (you gotta laugh Keith or you’d cry :P) – hope you and Sharon are well 😀

    anymore for anymore…come on peeps!!!

Music is something very special…I heard something very profound just recently, spoken by a young lad, a music student. He said that he’d noticed how certain people, often creative people, reacted very differently to music than did most others. He said “some people like music on in the background, some have music on because they like to listen to it – but there were some who don’t hear music so much as feel it”. He observed how music changes them physically as they listen to it, it evokes instant and dramatic changes in temperament, manifesting itself as euphoria, anger, rage, excitement, a need to be alone or even tears. Music is, and always will be a very emotive force to the creative. It fills the senses just like a scented breeze on a spring day or standing on the cliffs above a raging sea – don’t ever ignore it…don’t ever ignore it.

right – that’s enough of that crap!

    very nice Andrew! 😎

When I first saw this I was intrigued by the design – and now we can see it in the flesh it looks great too!

The dawing shows the print on the side having a square front edge and, of course, it looks so much ‘sweeter’ trimmed to the panel – but why didn’t you take it right to the back of the side panels too? – just askin’ 😀

With regard to the side prints – I also notice that the text doesn’t run parrallel to the brick pattern (ref. the baseline of the lower line of white text over the brick) – I guess this is to compensate for the ‘lie’ of the vehicle…but how did you calculate the difference? was the vehicle drawing good enough to design to – or did you have to work it out from the vehicle itself?

    brill job! 😎
