With the success of Mike selling his spare signlab software by auction last month.
I received an email asking will we be doing any more or similar.
I’m not sure anyone’s feelings on the matter, but im all ears if you would like to sell items in the buy-sell-swap forum “by auction” as well as plain old selling for a fixed price.
Rob and I spoke about introducing some extra features in that forum at Christmas last year to allow for auction bidding. Even although as it stands, its perfectly capable of running them. “but its good to have some extra fun features to make it all feel real”
😛 What do you folks think?. Should we try it out? Or just keep things as they are.
If so.. And you have something in your cupboard you want rid of, then feel free to submit..

    It’s your call…

I know it’s a bit obvious me being the first to jump in and say so – but I’d luv it! 😀

My wife and I are avid users of Ebay – and that’s always a good laugh with, hopefully, something to show at the end of it. Auctioning wtuff is so much more exciting than straight selling…only downside is you’ve got to be prepared to take the highest bid over your reserve price.

go for it – gotta be worth a try anyroad’

    more soon

Another avid fan of ebay here.

I’d like to see the buy sell swap forum put to more use.

    postive feedback already.. 😛

ive been thinking on this since posting.

can anyone see any problems that may arrise if doing this?
ide rather eliminate any possible problems before getting something like this off the ground.

obviously each bid made will be done by a registered user on the site all details etc are attached to that persons post. name, tel number, address etc.
the bid would be made in the form of a reply post. ill have to speak to rob and re-cap what he intended coding into the site structure to allow proper bids to be made rather than just typing in a price. to begin with that would be acceptable anyway..

to begin with, i would think we should only really have a monthly batch of items to bid on. running month-to-month. that way its easier to keep tabs on closing dates & things till we find our feet with the set-up.
items can be submitted by the seller or emailed to me if they wish to sell anonymous.
payment transactions would have to be arranged by seller and buyer.
and unlike ebay.. no.. i “dont” expect a commision.. 😉 😆 all for fun!

thats unless your a supplier, of course.. ahem.. 😉

Tread very carefully, eBay is not an auction, but just an online meeting/marketplace bringing buyers and sellers together.
Online ‘auctions’ are a legal minefield

The Sale of Goods Act 1979 section 57(2) states:
“A sale by auction is complete when the auctioneer announces its completion
by the fall of the hammer, or in other customary manner; and until the
announcement is made any bidder may retract his bid.”
    therefore rendering online auctions invalid.

And with online selling you then have distance selling laws to take into account.

To run *any* auction in the UK you have to be licensed.

I think it might be the wrong way to go..

It`ll start off ok, then it could get like some of the other forums.

Pirate sign programs for sale. Mikes and Brians Cd`s selling for £10 each or 2 for £15.

On other forums where they sell items, it`s like they`re are out to rip people off.

Very few sites use personal photos or their real names. Which in my opinion is for one reason only, they might need to hide oneday.

    just my views.

    some very good points. noted!

having had a quick think about this i could open a new group on the site and call it auction access or somthing like that.
not only for UKSG members but certain gold access members, silver and bronze. these folk, although may not have pictures do submit full details and have had credit card checks run on them already so they are 100% legit registrations.

i hear what outline is saying too.. your right. far too many dodgy sites out there selling cracked softwares and their grannies.. for a few quid.
ive heard of many headaches on sites like this… (they dont care about the visitors problems from their badly run scams)
anyway, software like signlab etc must be accompanied by dongle or details of who they bought it from. this way it can be checked they are the registered purchaser if the need arrises.
all item will only be accepted if accompanied by a picture also.

again ill take note of any further advice im given, thank you 😀

Sorry guys, a little off the beaten track here, but still in the auction domain. You may want to know the latest trick of the multi outlet retailers on the high street. As a company, we were recently invited to “bid” on a substantial contract for a major player on the high street. The auction is similar to that of ebay, with prospective suppliers bidding on parts of the contract. “Here’s the science” ….. as the bids go in, a meter measures the contract bid of each particular company, show on a scale/£000’s. Now bearing in mind, that there can be as many as 10 companies bidding for this part of the contract, its easy to see how this turns into a “dutch auction” with the desparate’s knocking off a few grand here and there in an effort to secure the contract. Sadly, the desparates are the ones who have for years supplied “said company” and have built up businesses around these contracts, and are cleverly, if not maliciously been squeezed even futher on prices. I think you’ll all agree – its just another case of the big boys controlling the market. The sooner we all kick this type of contract tendering into touch the better. Let the greedy B*@”D*s pay the fair price !

Call the group ‘ open to offers ‘
not an auction, but offers, maybe different legally to an auction.
