For all those new to the site – you should know we have this recurring debate about what’s the best music around. 😎

Some, like Phill from Right Signs tend to like The Carpenters and The New Seekers 😛 Others, like Rob say they like “Donald where’s ya’ trousers” and “we’re’ walking in the air” 😀

I’m here to tell you the best music around at the moment is a fantastic – brilliant – rockin’ – heavy mother-f***er of an album called ‘ElectricSix’ by a band of the same name…its’ AWESOME!!!!

With tracks like “naked pictures (of your mother)”, “Gay Bar”, “Torn between Vengeance and Fashion” and loads more…I’m listening to it as I type this – full bore on the speakers which may just result in a nose bleed! (<(

…if you havn’t got it – GET IT!

So, what’s your fav’ at the mo’ – and what’s your favourite of all time…

You forgot to mention “Danger Danger … High Voltage” and I bet you didn’t already know that it was originaly written by Maureen and sung by the Nolan Sisters.

It’s one of my favourite tracks on “The Best of the Nolans 1973 to 1976, Volume 5” 😎

I recommend Eminem; once you take out the swearing and just listen to the lyrics he makes a lot of sense.

I have Floyd in the car stereo at the moment. Good stuff but it’ll never reach the dizzy heights of Rick Wakemans ‘6 wives of Henry VIII’ album!!

I’ve been trying to help promote a local band who’ve just cut their second Album. Called ‘Barefoot’ there a mixed bunch of late 20 to 30 somethings, and there pretty damned good. They do gig up and down the country now and again and are ones to watch out for. There biggest problem……..too damn versatile hence the punchline.

“Difficult to categorise..but bloody interesting to listen to!”

Also tend to listen to Floyd, Zepp etc that was the only way to get energy into music at one time.

I went through a silly phase in the 70`s of listening to the Rolling Stones and signing along to their songs while i was still in primary school.

Thought i`d grown out of them in the 80`s and then they released “Start Me Up”. It was also during the 80`s that i went to see them live at St James Park in Newcastle then again at Hampden.

90`s they released some crap but then they hit us with “Bridges to Babylon” which was fantastic. I went to see them at Murrayfield when they toured with that album.

In 3 weeks i`m going to the Scottish Exhibition Centre to see them again.

Thats 4 different decades i`ve been listening to them and still they entetain me.

Also been re-aquainting myself recently with Marc Bolan and T Rex stuff….brilliant.

Coming from a less than affluent family the most economical music we used to buy was the old K Tel records. Cast your mind back to the variety of near perfect music that was available on such a prestigious lable, add to the mix an old record player that was a cross between a book cabinet, a cutlery drawer and a skateboard……ah those heady days

    anymore for anymore…come on peeps!!!

Music is something very special…I heard something very profound just recently, spoken by a young lad, a music student. He said that he’d noticed how certain people, often creative people, reacted very differently to music than did most others. He said “some people like music on in the background, some have music on because they like to listen to it – but there were some who don’t hear music so much as feel it”. He observed how music changes them physically as they listen to it, it evokes instant and dramatic changes in temperament, manifesting itself as euphoria, anger, rage, excitement, a need to be alone or even tears. Music is, and always will be a very emotive force to the creative. It fills the senses just like a scented breeze on a spring day or standing on the cliffs above a raging sea – don’t ever ignore it…don’t ever ignore it.

right – that’s enough of that crap!

    Aaah the music question.

Mike I think you’re spot on with the whole emotions thing while listening to music. If it’s paperwork I’m doing a little James Brown, Craig David or Elvis Costello keeps me sane.

I’ve got Queens of the Stone Age in the computer cd player at the moment Eminem sat there for quite a while (I think he’s a misunderstood Genius).

I like to listen to a radio station called Groove FM they play lots of R&B hip hop and funk kind of stuff.

My nan reckons I should have been born black because of the music I listen too. No problems for me.

I do draw the line at K tel’s best of Morris Dancing’s…”Let’s bang and Ring it” (I did some Morris dancing when I lived in Gloustershire…My secret’s out now…The shame…The shame)

Tell you what I think is fascinating:-

Musical notes are measured in octaves and the scales repeat after every eight notes.

The properties of atoms when arranged on a periodic table repeat themselves in multiples of eight electrons orbiting a nucleus in distinct shells (energy levels).

This is more than coincidence surely?

Music only sounds right when composed of notes produced by these distinct frequencies – any notes that are not on the scale sound flat or sharp. This translates to people that can’t sign or play an instrument properly.

Just as a musical note is only right when it hits a certain frequency, matter only exists in certain distinct frequencies, and chages from one type of atom to another in distinct “jumps” with nothing in between.

The fact that these both repeat in multiples of eight suggests to me that there is some common bond between music and matter 😮

By the way:- Hip hop and Rap was invented by gangster types that couldn’t sing and had no musical talent. To get around this lack of ability “Rap was invented to allow any tone deaf teenager to become a “pop star”

It’s an appropriate weekend for this thread as our sleepy village is hosting the V Festival this weekend. Despite it being walking distance from my front door in 8 years I’ve never been. I mean what have Coldplay done that’s worth £45?

Next weekend about 15,000 will fill the park for the Chelmsford Spectacular which is more family orientated and Monday Night features the Drifters, the Swinging Blue Jeans, and a Queen tribute band followed by fireworks. NO, I don’t work for the council but if your in shouting distance of Essex and want a great Day out it’s to be reccomended. If you want to find me just follow the tracks from the bar to the burger van, to the bar to the front of the stage for the grand finale! (No doubt with the mother in law and the wife in tow telling me i’m drinking too much and the kids whining for another quid for the helter Skelter!)

Lat week’s Robbie trouble at Knebworth brought back memories. The first Knebworth featured Pink Ployd as the main event, the concert starting with 3 Spitfires (or Hurricanes’s) flying low across the stage from behind the stege……health and safety….bah humbug …..but absolutely memorable. The traffic management was crap then and I had a run in with a bunch of hippies in a VW camper as 4000 cars tried to get out of a single farm gate.

Musical tastes? When you’ve seen Doctor Feelgood play the Kursaal, have Richard Clayderman, Dexy’s, King Crimson, Dylan, Zeppelin, T-Rex, Pistols, The Nolans, Laurence Olivier, Marylin Manson and Labi Siffre in your collection it’s an almost impossible question!!! Knebworth…..Martin I was there in the 70’s watching the likes of Tubes, Zappa, Genesis, Led Zeppelin, it was where I first saw Edwin Shirley Trucking’s yellow and purple trucks backstage and thought….that looks like a fun lifestyle…anyway after a few trips from Wales to our old yard next to Westham tube station (crows rd). I got a job, and worked with alot of all your favourites, and thought I would never quit ( well don’t feel I have completely 🙂 ).

It was a hard, but great life, and alot of fun memories and stories from those years, I still keep my hand in for a laugh and to meet up with old mates, but much less in recent years as the company is going so well.

When they are up this way we normally get a visit by EST trucks or Phoenix sleeper busses. and catch up on old times.

Still like a lot of good rock music, but also listen today to alot of Goa trance, I like Massive Attack, Faithless, Moby, One Giant Leap,Chemical Brothers etc I have 9 Café del Mar Chillout albums, Hotes Costes, and lot of Claude Challe’s Buddah Bar, I still buy stuff like Creed, I like old old Zepp, Floyd, Allman Brothers, Walter Trout, Jeff Beck, Little Feat, Wishbone Ash etc.

I guess from being exposed to night after night of doing spotlights on from Barry Manilow, John Denver, or Engelbert Humperdick to Madonna, Stones, Bon Jovi, or Eagles etc, and a whole load in the middle your music tastes beacome a little warped or varied.

Oh yes and I watched Robbie Williams at Knebworth on Channel 4 last weekend….where would I be without Sky digital, you can shut the doors at home put the TV on and would almost think you were back in Mid-Wales! 🙂

Sometimes get abit homesick here so watching UK TV makes you feel abit more at “home”

good to read everyones music preferences. 😉

i like my music, but not really into one band as such.. i like tons of stuff but normaly only 2 or 3 songs from each band/artist.
right now im playing “Golden Brown by the Stranglers” 😆 i can hear andrew laughing right now 😉
various bands/artists i like a few songs from are..

    stranglers
    aerosmith
    charletons
    beatles (of course)
    stone roses
    elton john 😮
    catatonia
like debbie, my Fave Floyd song is Comfortably Numb

my list goes on and on.. probably because i only like a few from each..
    but there you.. 😆

having said all this, i bought a CD for my car lately. its a meditation CD, just sounds, waves carshing etc.. i think its excelant & so does the voices i hear in my head! 😮 😆 i swear its this site thats doing it to me.. honest, honest, honest, i swear (<( (<((<(

    “rod” the Rolling Stones.
my brother is heavily into music and was also in a band. one of his best mates is bobby gillespie of primal scream. jim went on tour with them for 2 weeks, a couple of weeks ago. they were the support band for the Rolling Stones in spain. anyway, as you will probably know the gig was cancelled right at the last minute. hours before it was about to be performed…. the media blamed mick jagger for various thing, including sore throat etc. the real reason was mick jagger didnt want to do it because of the terrorist attacks in spain. they say he was there and annoyed at it all & was sorry, the fact is, he hadnt even left the bahamas were he was with his family & freinds.
this annoyed jim as he wanted to meet him but said he still had a wild 2 weeks on the tour buses.. rock and roll? he says he has never been so tired, says he doesnt know how these guys do it and cant beleive what goes on in those buses… lol im sure you can imagine 😉

Pink Floyd released a film in the early 70’s called ‘PF live at Pompeii…’

It was quite simply the band playing in the empty coliseum of the ruined city. I’d just left school and went to the afternoon matinee performance at the local flicks which was an old victorian music hall. The audience……ME….all alone in this bloody great theatre watching Floyd play to an empty auditorium.

If you think that was weird I still can’t work out why the ice cream lady came out at half time and stood at the front making me walk down to get my choc ice!

This is my plan 😮 …

(I can’t believe no one has thought of it before)..

    Reform Bucks Fizz 😀

Bobby’s up for it , Cheryl could probably be persuaded (still a looker 😉 ) Mike would agree to anything 😕 and Jay could be tempted if the money’s right. We could even draft in that fella from Dollar who tried to take over.

A supergroup to end all supergroups.

    What do you think 😀

I only listen to radio 1 at certain times, i.e. 6-9 Friday, 6-9 Sat, 7-9 Sunday. The rest of the time it’s radio 2 or the hifi.

When Claire was looking for music to accompany her garments in the Fashion Show at college we went through everything from Classical, Hawkwind (Hall of the mountain Grill, wonderful instrumetal on there), Alan Parsons Project, Ozzy (early Sabbath) through to Paul Oakenfold and DJ Tiesto (2 brilliant trance masters), in the end she settled for Rank1 and their track Airwave but in a chill-out beat, not the full on trance. It was then left to mum to edit and cut in at the right moment to give her 3.5 minutes of music.

A few years back I struggled to get hold of Pink Floyds copy of “Obscurred by Clouds” no one had seemed to hear of it, now it’s available everywhere.

My favourite Floyd Tracks have to be “Coming back to life” and “Keep Talking”, but on the more up to date side it has to be Paul Van Dyk (for those who don’t know who he is he’s the bloke on the Motorola C350 Ad)and “Tell me why” off his Out there and back album.

Out of curiosity has anyone out there heard of a group from the 70’s called “Neu” they were similar to Kraftwerk, I came across their album in a small record shop in Chester during that time, and they were recommended by Dave Brock (Hawkwind) so I thought I’d give them a try, ended up buying all 3 albums they did!

Even tho the beginings of it are way before my era I listen to a lot of Proggressive Rock, like Hawkwind, early Genesis material and Yes.

I highly recommend the Greatest Hits of Yes. £9.99 for a double cd, bargain I say.

Other than that Radio 2 is the station I normally listen to in my van. Good old Terry Wogan in the morning, can’t beat him (shame that).

And how have i missed such a busy thread 😕 damn receivers keeping me busy 😡

Aaaah the memories, Saw Hawkwind twice, early Genesis around the time of Nursery Crime album, and of course Yes at the Hardrock Manchester, Deep Purple (x2) Nazareth, Thin Lizzy (yes they even came to Chester in their very early days), thinking about it so did Status Quo! Those were the days. 😎

Trouble now is I’d feel like a Granny if I went to see Oakey & Tiesto. 👿

In my youth some mates and I used to go down to the free festival at Stonhenge. A friend of mine a bass player used to set up his equipment outside his tent and just play to anybody who happened to listen.
One afternoon a guy comes up and says “Hey youre pretty good with that bass how do you fancy playing with us tonight on stage cos our bassist hasent turned up yet?” Turns out its Dave Brock from Hawkwind. My friend a shy sort of chap says “no thanks but thanks for the offer.”

Anyway that evening Hawkwind play and they were fantastic.
They decided however to play stark b*****k naked. Believe me there was a very sheepish looking stand-in bassist trying to fade into the background….a close shave indeed for my friend.

    How we laughed.

As for my tastes in music while I work, it tend to change of course but I find Django Rhinehart at this time of year to be easy on the ear.

At the moment my all time favourite is a newish band called “KARNATAKA”
If you enjoy progressive rock check out their website http://www.karnataka.34sp.com/ Have a look at the entries in the “guestbook” If there is a band on the planet not to be missed this is it! (hot)

    Sorry but I digress……

Early Genesis up untill Steve Hackett left 🙁
    Floyd
Early 50’s & 60’s stuff like The Platters
    10cc
    Alison Moyet
    Mike Oldfield
    The Seekers
    Fleetwood Mac
    The Pretty Things
I will listen to most of the Popular Classical music for a change of mood
Even throw in a bit of Glenn Miller

I used to do the Reading Pop Festival in the early 70’s (Showing my age now 🙄 )
Saw most of the top bands of that era 😀

Fantastic drummers usually have to be the important factor for the music I love as I have been ‘tub thumping’ for the best part of 30 years.
Drummers that have spiritually moved me during my rhythmical life include:- John Bonham, Gene Krupa, Chad Smith, Steve White, Simon Kirke, Joe Morello, Steve Gorman, Keith Moon, Ringo Star, Vinnie Colaiuta, Micky Hart, Kenny Jones & Ian Paice.

Bestest DVD at the moment is Led Zepplin live, 2 disks, 5 hours of gigs through the 70’s, from the Albert Hall 1970 to Knebworth 1979.

Went to a Deep Purple concert last year, fantastic, I was lucky enough to catch Ian Paice’s drum stick after his wonderous drum solo.

Music I can’t live without includes: Zepp, Black Crowes, Red Hot Chilli Peppers, T Rex, Paul Weller, Free, Bad Co, White Stripes, Floyd, Bowie.

Blues – John Lee Hooker, BB King, Dr John, Clapton (when he’s in the Blues mood)

Chillout stuff – Norah Jones (HubaHuba 😛 ), Goldfrapp, Eno, Moby, Dub Reggae

Jazz – Gene Krupa & Buddy Rich (back in the 50’s they did this great record together, on Verve), Jacques Loussier Trio, Dave Brubeck

    Classical – Bach, Handel

Think that just about covers it……. all that talk of music has got me in the mood to crack open a Stella and play my drums along to a Chilli Peppers Track… LET’S ROCK 😎

during the day when you just about reach boiling point and you feel like jacking it all in and throwing all your toys out the pram…….

lock the doors, shut the windows, put up that closed sign (if you have one), load guns n roses – paradise city into the cd player, pick up that metal set square and prance about like a nutter for 5 mins playing air guitar.

after, if you dont feel like you can take on the world, you must be a signmaker!

foo fighters, nirvana, chilli peppers hendrix or the doors also works!

By the way for the navelgazers (i.e. other guitarists) I play a beautiful 1988 Sunburst American Strat. When I bought this guitar it cost £1000.00 and the ford escort I was driving at the time cost £400.00

It would be great to hear from musicians on the site

TRADITIONAL IRISH MUSIC I adore playing it i play the Bodrhan the single irish drum in sessions throughout the UK and in Co. Clare.
There is nothing better than sitting for up to eight hours knocking out irish jigs and reels with a dozen or so like minded musicians over a gallon of the black stuff I have played in Temple Bar in Dublin that is awesome its like a rave but deeper! wonderful therapy in comparison to playing an Apple G4 all day i have all my instruments at the side of me in my office one of the perks of being the main man!
I have six guitars inc a strat and les Paul, five drums a fiddle a mandolin and flute
This type of music has got to be the very best to unwind to!!
I also sing irish folk songs to my magnificent Yamaha LL11E accoustic guitar
come on Gray back me up here fella!!

Well as a result of Mikes recommendation, I asked my wife and kids to buy me the new LP by electric six as it was my birthday last week. They couldn’t get me an LP (apparently they’ve stopped making them) so they bought me the “seedy” instead (I think that’s how you spell it 😕 ).

Since then I’ve been driving my van all around Central Scotland with “Gay Bar” blasting out of the speakers. 😳

It is a brilliant album (reminds me a bit of early Roxy Music). And it’s great for drowning out the dance tracks booming out of every alloy wheeled Vauxhall Nova in the area. 👿

Whilst out at the weekend, perused the new Vangelis CD, thought about it for a while and put back on the shelf. Matthew wanted a particular album so we went into one of the smaller record stores, Vangelis was being played so ended up buying it anyway! along with someone called something along the lines of Riders of the Crypt (this is the one Matthew wanted) very raw rock. Ahh, the memories of playing “Heaven and Hell” in the middle of Clocaenog Forest waiting for the Rally Cars to arrive.

Sitting here listening to Tiesto’s mix of Deliriums Silence (mind blowing superb).

And hoping Santa will bring me a copy of the new PVD (Paul Van Dyk) for Christmas.

All time favourite now is Led Zep, particular track ‘Dazed & Confused’ (describes me after a day at the PC) but I don’t remember them in the 70’s, guess my taste changed. Other favourites, Eric Clapton, saw him live with Cream in the late 60’s, Rolling Stones, saw them at the Marquee club in Wardour street also in the 60’s, wicked as they say now

Having daid that, I’m a little older now & my taste has refined 😆 , Slipknot, Metallica, Evinesence, Dido??
