Hi everyone – at last did I hear? I’m not slow, I’m just conserving energy 😀

I worked for a number of years for multi nationals (Oz, NZ and UK) in the last decade or so mainly in human resource disciplines like training / presentation skills / development / IT and the like. That I guess whetted the appetite for creative matters, when it came time to work for myself in 2000.

I found a small sign biz in Hampshire that was not doing much and re-located it here to rural Shropshire. After a very slow start, I decided to focus on trading off the internet, with direct-to-consumer stickers / decals etc. I rarely get to meet my customers in person – some may say “great” to that! (:)

I have a Roland PC600 (and a smaller plotter as a back-up), use Sign Lab and work from home – my garage!

My initial training was via SignMaster of Market Drayton and subsequently by the well know training duo of Mr.Trial and Mrs.Error. I found this forum through the ad in Sign Update – that was the best find I ever made! (hot)

If I ask dumb questions from time to time, just humour me – thats what the wife does 😆 Remember, Eagles may soar, but ferrets don’t get sucked into jet engines.

    Cheers

    Alan

    Hi Alan,
Welcome aboard, I see you are a pipe smoker, not many people seem to participate in that habit these days, at least not with tobacco !!!
I wondered how you advertised for the work you get from the internet ??

Hello Alan, and welcome to the UK signboards.

It’s good to hear from another escapee from the corporate jungle 😆

I hope you benefit as much as I have from the sharing of advice and experience from other signmakers.

I’m sure with your broad experience, that you have a lot of advice and knowledge to share with us. It doesn’t have to be sign related.

What made you choose to become a signmaker after your previous career ?

Come on Brian…We’re supposed to be creative, artsy bohemian kinds of people. We all know what the colour of the weed in the pipe is…

Alan, Welcome to the board. It’s heaps of fun and not a little addictive.

    Thanks for the welcome guys.

The pipe (and it’s contents 😆 )have had to go – poverty 🙁 . The pic is a couple of years old, when I could afford to smoke – still enjoy the aroma when I come across another weed consumer.

Website promotion is something I have had to rapidly clue up on – the pros call it Search Engine Optimisation, or SEO for short. With some smart software and a lot of head scratching
(why do you think I am wearing the hat in the pic (hot) )
All I know is that I get a heck of a lot more “customers” come through my website than I could hope to get through the front door of a commercial premises in the short term. Out of the hundreds of visitors each week, a smallish % make enquiries and of those most convert to orders. The process had taken a couple of years though to start taking off, though.

Why signs after corporate hand-to-hand combat? I have always had a love for IT (2 sons with a similar liking helped!) and particularly graphics and IT. comes I guess from setting up literature and training presentations in the bad old days – plus I have been a keen photographer – not enough time now though.

(:) If you read in the bathroom, is that multitasking? (:)

    Have a nice day.
