Cutting vinyl of photographs, how?
Posted by Steve Lamb on September 18, 2003 at 9:02 pmDoes anyone know how to convert a greyscale photo into a vinyl cut image. I saw it being done a few years ago at the Sign Show but never remebered how it was done.
I remember a feature in Signlab, select a pic and send to cut on the plotter and it cuts all the shapes and contour from different thicknesses of vinyl.
We haven’t got a call for it or probably never will, just something that crossed my mind! Anyone know?Cheers

Picture cut? 😉 you need Flexisign
my version(s) of signlab hasn’t got this feature on.
I now only use signlab for all my previous saved work, all new stuff is produced through the excellent flexisign pro 7 , you want to see the speed
that it rips and prints too! instantaneous. -
Photo machine? you need Signlab!!! 😛
my version(s) of signlab DO HAVE this feature on.
I now only use signlab…nuff said! 😉more soon

low level modules of signlab probably wont have this feature..
i do have it on ours and it works very easily and very fast!i have not tried anything else due to me being a very PRO SIGNLAB type of guy.. but thats just my preference 😉

Robert and all who replied
I still would like to know how its done, prefarably in Signlab though. I used to be a Flexisign geezer about 8 years ago but I’m definatly a hardened Signlab user now, although I do still have a version of Flexi I don’t use it.
So back to my burning question, do I need to repeat it? Nah, come fellas how’s it done? and which version of SL is it, module, tool,Cheers fellas

Sorry mate missed this one, try to keep the number of bands to 150 to start with and band min @ 10%, band max @ 90%, start from here and muck about till you get something you like, remember loads of bands i.e. over 250 is a right bugger to weed 🙂 the start bitmap is best b/w rather than colour but remember colour pics converted to b/w tend to loose a lot of contrast (the range of shades of gray between black and white) so maybe mess about with the photo first in something like photoshop to bring back the tones.

I take it you’ve never used Flexisign then? 😉

Here we go this seems to be turning into a my softwares better than your software debate, surely both have good and bad points and it really boils down to what you are use to or feel most comfortable with.

Outline or ‘J’…is it John?
I must confess that, Signlab aside, I’ve tried a few other sign programs in my time – but not Flexi’.
Just by way of chit-chat – I started using Signlab when it was ‘Electric Studio’ back in the early 1990’s – anyone else remember it? It was only later that it merged with (or was otherwise taken onboard by) Cadlink in Canada. Like many others here, I’ve never found Signlab wanting in anyway. It has always allowed me to do pretty much everything I needed – vehicle graphics, shop fronts, sign boards and even estate agents boards. 😉
I know a number of regulars here use Flexi – I think there’s even been a poll here on the various packages and how many use them. At the end of the day I guess it’s what you’re used to or prefer and whilst they all offer similar functionality, most lead us to pull our hair out sometimes too! 😉

Why not get a demo of Flexi? A few hours with it and you will be converted.
-
Go on Mike, get the Mac version of Flexisign 7 & a lovely new G5 Mac, you know it makes sense 😉 😉
-
What can flexi do that signlab can`t
don`t forget to compair like for like levels.
I`ve got colourmaster, no complates at all.

…at the end of the day, there’s a lot more to signmaking than software, it’s just one of many tools at your disposal.
it’s not always about what ya’ got – it’s what you do with it!
…ooohh missus! 😳

I doubt there’s much Flexi does that Signlab doesn’t. It just does it better, easier and quicker.

1,000’s I am sure wouldn’t agree with you.
But one thing you can be 100% sure on, it’s definitely more expensive! 😆
-
i heard flexi is a fair bit more exspensive than signlab.. about £300-£500 more..
i have never heard anyone tell me that flexi can do something signlab cant!i have heard that signlab wins most user freindly sign software many years in a row..
i guess it maybe down to what software you feel you like, most comfortable with.
having said that
if you dont use any and are considering it.. the few lines of text above may Influence allot of folk towards one. 😉 -
quote Robert Lambie:i have never heard anyone tell me that flexi can do something signlab cant!
Flexi can run multiple windows (i.e you can open more than one file at any one time – and drag and drop between windows (similar to Corel Draw) Signlab can’t do this.
That’s a pint you owe me Rob 😉
-
NO WAY PHILL.. your a scotsman mate.. your supposed to be on my side 😮 😮 😮
“Rob walks away.. scratching his head & kicks a can into the depth of the dark alley he is walking into” 😥 😥
ok phill.. ill get the first round mate.. you and martin can get the second, third, forth and fifth 😉 😆 😆 😆
-
oh yeh and remember.. for an extra £500 it had better be good 😉 😆 😆
-
I have been told soon you will be able to open mulitple copies af Signlab. Apparently this will be better than opening multiple windows?
For the record Signlab e6 Colourmaster is £2200, Flexi Pro is £2995.
X-Grades to Signlab are also far cheaper & Cadlink are far more flexible than Amiable.
That must make it 1-1, with number 2 coming for Signlab soon! 😆
-
Open multiple copies? Why would you want to do that? How much memory would each running copy take up?
It’s just bad coding.
-
Back to the original question……
Wissen used to do a stand alone programme called Photocutter.
-
I remember it John, I think maybe they were the 1st to come up with it?
I don’t remember ever seeing it used on a job though? We did have a customer who had an idea of using it in signs for nightclub, not sure if the idea came off though. I must give them a call to find out.
Signlab is far more popular in the UK than Flexi, unless something drastic happens it will be for the forseeable future
In all the years I have been associated with Signlab you are the 1st person I have ever come across that has had Signlab & gone over to Flexi claiming it’s far better. Just beacause YOU didn’t get on with Signlab does not mean it is inferior. Some people here may even take offence to the fact that you are claiming their software to be far inferior to yours.
Anyway they all do the same thing at the end of the day, the person behind the mouse is far more important than the software! 🙂
-
Who cares? If you can make high quality signs with a ZX Spectrum and a blunt Stanley knife AND make money………..:)
Before the rumours start, I get a fresh six-pack of blades EVERY year!
Love y’all now.

Come on fellas eh, stop heckling, this sounds worse than a dodgy sport debate in the pub 🙂 Thanks to Neil and Steve for the straight answers, I will be giving it a go in the few days (IF THERE’S TIME! :o)
