I’m not certain of the functionality of the log but I presume you can retrieve printed jobs from there

A few years ago I was adding some text out on site to a chemists fascia (powder coated aluminium) – I’d priced to give the whole sign a bit of a clean while I was up there but the 3M surface cleaner I was using wasnt having any effect
Customer handed me a bottle of Vim cleaner – it was remarkable how easily the dirt and grime came off

MemberJune 14, 2020 at 9:55 am in reply to: Sign Vinyl Fading, how would you deal with the situation? The issue isn’t whether your workmanship is up to scratch or not – the issue is whether the vinyl is up to scratch or not
From the photographs I would say that after 4 years in an exposed environment the vinyl is holding up well
I wouldn’t be offering to redo the work and if she pursues the issue, I’d be asking your vinyl suppliers rep to have a word with her
Will it clean up at all to regain some of its gloss?

The NovaTrim Composite 204 is specifically for a 3mm panel so I’m hoping its up to the job
The customer was offered the folded box option (which was slightly more expensive) but favoured the trim

Middle of the night and just on my tablet so can’t remember exactly but look for ‘find and replace’
you can set whatever criteria you need to search for. – colour, outline colour, etc etc
Hopefully that should do it for you

Eeeee ffs Martin – my apologies
I was replying to an email from Colin whilst I was typing that out
-
Thanks Steve and Martin…
My colleague managed to find this – it is a free download called SignLoad designer
Sign up to there site and go to the downloads tab at the top and look for SignLoad Designer in the little list
http://www.buchanancomputing.net/downloads.html
this is the interface and is pretty much exactly what we were looking for – it allows you to put in the sign dimensions and ground clearance etc – there is a drop down list for estimated wind pressure and – once you’ve inputted all of your dimensions you just click ‘suggest section’ and it tells you which diameter of tube to go with
We’ve literally just used this once but it backed up our gut feelings based on past experience but please use your own discretion if deciding to use it
-
I’m good Martin thanks….hope all is well with you
yeah – I’d searched for wind loadings etc but it was coming up with results for roofs etc
Couldn’t find anything that you could just input the size of the sign, ground clearance etc and it would just tell you which diameter to go with
I was actually helping a colleague with this and I’d asked him if he checked with Ashby – he said he had but I’ll have another look
Thanks for the reply
-
I’m not aware of any way to change the settings on the fly but I would recommend doing one of the machines ‘built in’ cut tests if you are using different materials
Just a quick cut test and adjust the pressure accordingly

they look like bubbles to me…
A good tip I heard many moons back (could very well have been from Rob….one of those obvious things that you sometimes need to hear)….always make sure the vinyl comes into contact with the substrate through the squeegee……never let the vinyl contact the substrate first and then squeegee over the top
The letters have probably worked purely down to their size…not enough surface area to get air bubbles trapped in
My guess is that you have placed the image on the van and then squeegeed over the top rather than starting at the top and working down whilst holding the graphic off the van until the squeegee passes over it
-
Neil,
Thank you so much for that…
It didn’t matter how many times I googled the subject, using different terminology each time, I just didn’t come across that page at all

Many thanks for that Rob, just to explain a little further…..
It was actually an employee who set the shop up for us but he is no longer with us.
He had various conversations with Godaddy about controlling the prices globally but was told it could not be done…it’s not that I’m disbelieving him, it’s just I can’t believe something fundamental like that is not an option.
I just got involved in a conversation yesterday and was hoping if I asked on here I might have got a ‘yes it can be done’ or a no it can’t be done’ answer
I’ll take a look at the vids….thanks again

Just double check if you are colour matching under daylight bulbs.
We fitted our print room out with them but greens were doing weird things under the daylight tubes…took the print outside and it looked totally different to how it did inside (only really noticeable on the greens for whatever reason)

Thanks Kev,
I’d looked at that in Corel but when I tried to create a bitmap using that option it just produced a low resolution pixelated image.
I’m not even sure whether I’m using the correct terminology as there is such little information on it when I google it but Corel definitely calls them ‘Paletted Bitmaps’ when they are imported in.
It just seems like there is a ‘magic formula’ in that a bitmap can be easily handled (I’m presuming low file size) but perfect to look at when zooming in
Just for clarification I have only ever seen these as phone numbers, or address lines etc rather than pictures or photographs
I’m sure I’m missing something but can’t seem to find any info to go looking in another direction

Is the ink suitable for printing onto correx?
I’d have thought your ink supplier would have advised you that retarder would do the opposite of what you require
assuming the ink is air drying you can accelerate the drying time by pushing warm air over the prints but you would have to check the data sheets to see whether it is safe to do so
If you are new to screen printing are you thinning the ink down too much initially ?
-
I haven’t actually done this before Cheryl but I would imagine Isopon would do the job….you may need to stick a piece of dibond or similar inside the tray first and then fill the holes with this…

Nick,
Import that PDF into corel and and send it through to yor RIP from there
with our setup exporting into the rip as a PDF will give different results to exporting it as an EPS
once you have your printed chart/charts use them as a reference to match to an actual Pantone reference. You migh tfind that actual Pantone 300 is 301 on your new chart…or it might be that the CMYK chip (left hand side) is closer than the pantone (right side)
Once you import that chart into corel and click on the individual chips you’ll see what I mean
-
we use this one Nick
The pantone chips are on the right with their CMYK equivalents on the left

Brian….draw an arrow pointing to the left on a piece of paper….draw another arrow pointing to the right on another piece of paper.. mark the top of both bits of paper so you know you have them the right way up
hold them back to back and they will both point in the same direction…i.e. the shop
Merry Christmas though, I’ve enjoyed this one

Steve…the machine didn’t need any altering at all to produce the positives
It just printed what it was told to print once we found a film that it would recognise
We used the Ultrachrome inks with it but you have to run it at a fairly high DPI to get the density
For halftone work we used to run it through Wasatch but if it was basic block colour we would print directly from Corel
As I say…we never got to the bottom of why the machine would detect some clear films and not others but it was a real headache finding one that did….I can’t remember the name of the one we used but we bought it from http://www.mclink.org.uk/
-
we used to use an Epson 9800 for this purpose with great results
The only problem we had and it could potentially be a bigger problem now is that the printer struggle to ‘read’ certain makes of the clear film. When we bough the machine we were recommended a clear film that worked withit but after a couple of years it became obsolete…finding another one that the machine would recognise was a bit of a headache.
The sensors on the printer just couldn’t pick up some of the films and thought there was nothing loaded…we tried milkier films thinking that that would work but it didn’t…we eventually found one that did work and there seemed nothing visible to make it any different to ones that didn’t work
The machine that Jamie posted will no doubt be calibrated to work with a specific type of film…….you might just be tied to that particular film though because there was very little choice a couple of years ago
-

MemberJune 4, 2013 at 7:38 am in reply to: Can anyone suggest anything I can do with banding on printI’ve had similar problems Simon and never really found a solution which has worked everytime….
I put our problems down to the file rather than the media and I always assumed it was the fountain steps created in Corel that weren’t converting properly in the rip
I had some success converting the background fade to a bitmap…it will probably throw your colours out but all I did was create a new colour swatch to pick from by converting the pantone chart to JPEG and printing it
I could be way off but it always seemed to happen when the background was a fade so I always assumed it was a file problem and not the media
-
Gareth…
I don’t have X4 but have a look for cutout Lab under ‘Images’
you basically just trace round the outside of the image with a highlighter pen and then fill the area you want to keep
very easy to do but it’s up to you how accurate you want to be with it
-
I’ve always found that EPS creates larger files than PDF…..
One thing I have learned though Nick is when I publish to PDF I delete everything else from the page and make the pige size exactly the same size as the image you are exporting
It was something I realised by accident…..what I used to do was centre the image I was sending through to the page…reduce the page size to the exact size of the image and then Publish to PDF but leaving anything else on the screen without deleting…….when this came through to the rip only the image was visible and nothing looked untoward. I then realised that when I brought that PDF back into Corel that it was including everything else that had been on the screen at the time of sending it through creating a much larger file than needed
I hope that makes sense…..to try and simplify that
centre image to centre of page
make page size the exact same size as image
delete everything else from your screen and then Publish to PDF

Hugh…I know you’ve already mentioned in the other thread that you didn’t want to go over kill and attract the wrong type of customers….
Personally I would go fairly subtle on the outer building itself with some quality built up letters and then use the windows to show examples of what you do…….high quality photographic images direct to the glass in one window and maybe LED light pockets in the other window with various examples of your products
Just thinking it would attract people upto the window without shouting accross the street too much

publishing as PDF for Document Distribution and publishing as PDF for Editing should give the same colour chart a very different look
