CorelDRAW ‘not responding’ when exporting
Posted by Nick Minnery on May 14, 2013 at 3:44 pmSeems to be happening all the time and it’s driving me NUTS!
Whenever I try to export a slightly intricate design (PDF), the programme struggles and crashes ‘CorelDRAW is not responding’ .It’s fine with EPS files. Anything large, it just can’t handle.
I end up losing the design, even if I try to save it first, it crashes! I’m losing a lot of time with this, and PC monitors. I’ve thrown 3 out of the window already this week (hot)
Is this a PC memory problem??
Any advice form computer nerds out there would be much appreciated 😉

Is Corel’s Temp folder full maybe? I get that from time to time with large files.
What version are you using? -
I also often get crashes with corel x5 and mostly with large files, usually when using trace or importing large eps or pdf etc, have recently updated pc to 3700k 32gb ram everything high end and still corel crashes regularly, only partial solution I found is to save more often, then at least part of the job is done, then reopen & try again, it is annoying & sometimes wish I had learnt to use Ai but that seems all foreign to me.

Nick, does your file contain lots of special effects or imported items from other programmes? You can also try a F8 restart of Draw to see if that works, also try exporting as cmx, import back into draw and then try pdf export. Publish to pdf with a different setting rather than exporting and if all else fails can you send me the file and I’ll try it this end. I’m using X6 with the latest updates and it is very solid

Fellas, many thanks for the replies.
@ Harry, I’m using X5 at the moment, never thought it could be a temporary folder issue? Will look into that.
@ Paul, surprised to hear that you still had issues after changing the hardware. It’s all foreign to me too!
@ Alan, thanks for the suggestions, will try those. One image I was trying to export did have a some intricate floral images on it, but when I scaled it down to 1/4 the size, it worked?!!
I do find that exporting as EPS is quick and always works. Also, thse EPS images don’t need cropping in Versaworks. What are the disadvantages of exporting all images as EPS?? I’m guessing you can only export vector images like this??
Thanks again chaps 😉

I’ve always found that EPS creates larger files than PDF…..
One thing I have learned though Nick is when I publish to PDF I delete everything else from the page and make the pige size exactly the same size as the image you are exporting
It was something I realised by accident…..what I used to do was centre the image I was sending through to the page…reduce the page size to the exact size of the image and then Publish to PDF but leaving anything else on the screen without deleting…….when this came through to the rip only the image was visible and nothing looked untoward. I then realised that when I brought that PDF back into Corel that it was including everything else that had been on the screen at the time of sending it through creating a much larger file than needed
I hope that makes sense…..to try and simplify that
centre image to centre of page
make page size the exact same size as image
delete everything else from your screen and then Publish to PDF

EPS will make large file sizes that said turn off the preview and that will save alot. PDF is great except for the size limitation ie anything over about 5metres will result in it not displaying in Reader (Blank page) It is there and can be imported back into Draw or displayed in another reader such as Nitro. This is a limitation of Adobe. PDF will retain transparencies which is good but some of the RIPS won’t handle them properly so you get a grey block or nothing where a drop shadow should be. EPS will break these effects into thousands of small bitmaps and although they don’t display well if imported into Drw they do tend to print ok but can take a while to RIP. Publish to pdf has many settings and altering these can have an affect on the PDF and how it RIPS. I’ve found that high end RIPS used in the litho print industry tend to handle transparencies better than some large format RIPS but the safest bet is always to simplfy the file within Draw

Alan DLearn something new everyday, have always saved with preview, now saved with no preview and files are much smaller. thanks 😀

The preview is used by programmes such as Quark . A low resolution preview is used for placement and sizing, at output time the postscript device then used the actual eps file to output. Non postscript devices would print either the scrappy low res image or a grey box. Drawing programmes such as Corel/Illy/Signlab will just interpret the actual drawing so no preview is required. If you have a large drawing in theory you would end up with a large preview and despite the resolution it would be large.

So I should just change the option to ‘postscript’ in the drop down box?
Another thing I often wondered about, the ‘binary’ ‘ASCII’ choice..what does that do?
-
Sorry Harry, which drop down box are you referring to.
Alan D -
sorry Alan, not a drop down but a check box option under the Document tab.
-
on a single core machine, not responding doesn’t really appear just a white screen… on multicore machine not responding appears as the program is busy… near the end of creating a PDF it is messing around with Temp and actually building the file.
Sometimes Waiting helps and then your computer returns.. not all the time

Regarding Coreldraw version X6 I’ve always had the laggy copy/ paste and save issue in XP SP3 only, Windows 7 it seems fast and fine.
I recently updated to version X6.1 and the problem of laggy copy/ paste/ save seemed to have been fixed…..so i proceeded to update to the latest X6.3 and now i have the problem back again.
Is there anyway i can roll back the versions to X6.1 without doing a system restore to an earlier date (because I’ve not got a previous checkpoint)?? -
Apart from uninstalling Draw and then re-installing X6 and the 1st update I’m not sure you can roll back but befor you do that try this;
Tools – options – global and uncheck ‘enable background tasks’. Not saying it will sort it but may help.

Alan Dwhere is the turn off preview?
-
EPS export – general – preview image, change TIFF to none from the drop down option.

Thanks for the reply, It seems that it’s related to the default printer that’s on a network issue (as has been pointed out earlier in this thread)
I set it to any other default USB printer and now X6 flies along as it should be. It’s only on X6 and XP that i have a problem but for now I’ll keep it like it is or until it get’s fixed in another update.
Cheers,
Alex.
