Paletted Bitmaps in CorelDraw
Might be a bit of a vague question but could anyone explain what a Paletted Bitmap is and how they are produced?
Increasingly we are receiving artwork in PDF which includes paletted bitmaps…these bitmaps look virtually perfect with no obvious pixelation…….If I ever need to trace one (to have better control over colour) they trace perfectly
I’m just on a bit of a mission to find out more about them but Google is not my friend on this occasion 😕

dont take this as gospel but my understanding is because it uses a limited palette of 256 colours it stops you getting hundreds of shades on edges etc so tracing can follow a nice strong edge if that makes sense a bit like Posterize.Paletted (8-bit)
This color mode also supports a maximum of 256 colors, however those colors can consist of any of the colors available in the RGB color spectrum. By default, converting a bitmap to Paletted (8-bit) will result in the color palette being automatically generated based on the colors provided in the source document. If the document contains colors that are not found in the RGB color spectrum (i.e. Pantone), it will convert them to the closest available RGB value. In the event that the source document contains more than 256 colors, the color palette will consist of the most used colors in the image.

I’d looked at that in Corel but when I tried to create a bitmap using that option it just produced a low resolution pixelated image.
I’m not even sure whether I’m using the correct terminology as there is such little information on it when I google it but Corel definitely calls them ‘Paletted Bitmaps’ when they are imported in.
It just seems like there is a ‘magic formula’ in that a bitmap can be easily handled (I’m presuming low file size) but perfect to look at when zooming in
Just for clarification I have only ever seen these as phone numbers, or address lines etc rather than pictures or photographs
I’m sure I’m missing something but can’t seem to find any info to go looking in another direction
