Posted by Warren Beard on April 3, 2011 at 4:05 pm

Well as some might have known I have taken the plunge and moved in to a unit, just finished up most of the stuff so I can start functioning again form tomorrow, a few bits and pieces to do like finish the vinyl racks etc and find places for a few things but so far so good and very excited. I built the table (10’x6′) and the sheet material rack yesterday with the help of a friend, as you can see I utilised the top of it for storing my empty cores, we also cut 8 pairs of racks for vinyl so still need to assemble them. (thanks to Rob and Phill for the tutorials on these)

I would also like to thank all those over the past 4 years who have given me help and support to get me to where I am today and I really appreciate it. I would also like to send a thank you to the late John Childs who always had time for me and helped in so many ways and I truly miss him as do we all. I wish he could have seen this as I know he would have been proud.

Anyway some pictures of the new place as promised.

    cheers

    Warren

Great looking place Warrren, well done to you sir

JC would be proud of you as I think many of us on here are. We have followed you from the beginning strive forward, never afraid to ask questions to help you achieve what you have today.

I know there have been some lows but it seems your persistence has paid off and I truly wish you well in the new premises taking Mint Signs to the next level and will one day look forward to the ‘Mint Signs franchises’

That’s looking good Warren – good luck when you open tomorrow, I’m sure you’ll find the extra space is worth the investment.

I also miss John and often wonder "What would John have advised" – It’s nearly a year now since he passed away but I’m sure he would also have been proud of you and what you have achieved so far.

That look like an amazing space to work Warren, Whats the outside like? is it in a good area?

Have you got a sign yet?

Good time of year to make the shift.

It must be a relief to get the space back in your house as well I’d have thought.

Many thanks for the comments, it’s cold in here today so need to sort some heating out otherwise the wife will be moaning all day :lol1:

No signs up yet, the outside doesn’t look great at the moment as they are about to paint, there are quiet a few other units around so hopefully get some work from them but we are not visible from the road and no passing trade really.

    Will keep you all posted.

Thanks again for the kind words.

    cheers

    That looks absolutely awesome Warren.

Looks very well laid out and you seem to have got all your kit in there neatly.

Tidy too, at the mo, lets see it in a week or so…. 😀

One thing you may want to think about is where customers go when they come see you? We are in the middle of building a small showroom/reception space with a counter top to welcome customers and keep them out of the workshop area.

Enjoy the new surroundings, your right JC would be very proud.

Really is well worth considering…..sick to death of being a ‘design monkey’ with the customer standing behind you…. ‘Move that over there…can you make that bigger’ 👿

Hi Warren, how is the unit now? Has the layout altered to how you first had it, what did you find you had missed (if anything) after moving in?

Also how is your air source heating now? Is it still working well?

I’m taking over new premises from 1st April, huge (filthy) empty space, so now looking for ideas on what to do with it!

    Hi Lorraine

Haven’t changed the layout since moving in as it works for me as it is and would be too much hassle to change anyway 😉 but no I’m happy with it. Haven’t missed anything out, made a large 10’x6′ table from the tutorials (just wish I had of made the legs higher as 800mm is just too low for me and it hurts my back when weeding) I also built the storage rack for sheet material and 6 new vinyl roll holders which I now need more of but no more wall space 😕 (I guess that is one thing I might change but need to clear some old stock first to see if I really need to.

I’m currently looking in to getting a RollsRollers or Rapid Applicator which is bigger than my table so we might be slightly more squeezed but still enough room for now although will be full up in the office area. We can expand the office space in to the workshop space but will cost money obviously so trying to avoid that if possible.

The heater struggled a bit a few times when the temp dropped to about -5 but they did tell us that -5 is the where it will drop performance, I think the compressor unit outside freezes and could take up to about 2 hours before it started to blow. Any other time it works really well and we have to keep turning it down or off (like today 😎 ) Besides that and we can’t set a continuous timer are the only negatives, we have to set it each day before we leave and so Mondays are always a cold start 😉 )

As for running costs I have to try work it out, the landlord comes around to read our meter and they didn’t do it when they should have so we don’t have a month by month bill and we also use other electric heaters in the print room and workshop area so this would be included so hard to tell exactly what just the one cost to run. We also don’t have insulated walls (only the roof) so our heating bill is going to be higher as well.

I think everybody says it, I moved in here thinking there is so much space and would take years and years to fill, we are now fill in the office area and might have to expand if we continue this way, we were looking to invest in some new machinery would would have meant we needed to expand the office but have decided to buy a house instead 😮 :lol1:

    Good luck with your move

    cheers

    one year on update!

We have just (well almost) finished re-arranging the office to make space for our first part time employee and thought I would update the thread with new pictures a year on so you can see the development and how I am fitting in to the space.

Another quick update in a few weeks time as well possibly 😉

Excited to hear about Hugh’s big move I realised I had updates I could post and hopefully be some inspiration to him as he takes the next big leap for his business. It’s another year on and we have just completed 2 years here so here are the updated images, as you can see we have done the following in the last year, well actually most over the last 3 months,

Rapid Applicator had for a year now
Expanded unit 50% in size (the new section through the double green doors)
invested in print and finishing equipment
    carpeted the 2 rooms
racking and shelving in new print department and workshop
    lots of painting
    more vinyl racks
    comfy couches for customers
and we’ve had a full time member of staff for 8 months now and he’s doing really well.

on top of this we have our 2 boys 6 and 1 years old and number 3 is due in June (a girl) so busier times ahead. :lol1:

anyway it’s been great and still loving it, had really good comment from customers about the unit and even suppliers who seem to like visiting more often now, maybe it’s the coffee machine :lol1: 😉

anyway this June I would have been in this game for 6 years and it’s changed so much so wonder what the next 6 years will be like 😮

    Happy sign making everybody

    Warren
