  • Anyone recommend the best adhesive for fabricating Foamex ?

Posted by Martin Manley on March 3, 2013 at 11:00 am

    Hi
Need to fabricate some large (1 metre high) letters in Foam PVC. Normally i would use Tensol 70 to stick it all (Foam to foam) but these might need something a bit heavier duty. Have trawled through ‘net for data sheets but not much forthcoming on sticking. Any ideas?

    Cheers

cyanoacrylate adhesive (superglue) works amazingly well on foamex.

Another and it leaves no residue is a chloroform / (di/tri)chloromethane base as it melts the material where it’s touching other material (doesn’t evaporate)…but evaporates on exposed surfaces.

sold as light duty acrylic adhesive

For foamed PVC I use adhesive that is sold for bonding pvc pipes. Available in all DIY stores.
Couldn’t tell you a brand name offhand. Go to the plumbing section.

Sorry Dave but chloroform does not stick PVC. I gave away 4 demi johns full of chloroform as it didn’t stick foam pvc. I bought in some other glue as I wanted one adhesive for perspex and pvc, only to find they had stopped making it as it is carcenogenic. Kicking myself now as I can’t get chloroform any more.

Thanks guys – all good advice. The fusion stuff from grafityp seems expensive but probably works out cheaper than it’s equivalent weight in mitre fix.
Will post pictures of finished job…
